Really would appreciate some help on this.  I am trying to set openarena up for a friend on their windows vista laptop, using an ATI Radeon x1600 card which has the latest ATI drivers installed. Using latest 0.70 Zip file downloaded from links on openarena site.

Following information appears in the Openarena Console:

The q3config.cfg is created when the game runs the first time, as the game hasn't started up because it can't start the default video mode 640 x 480 it wouldn't exist, so what is it about your friend's system that is refusing to start with that video mode?

Thanks for the response dmn_clown

The card has a minimum resolution of 800x600, max resolution 1680 x 1050 on the acer laptop it is installed in. However I did manage to set this to 640 x 480 in the ATI control panel and still not able to start this, same error.

TIA

Set the properties on the exe file to run 640x480.

This time get the following:

You'd probably have better luck increasing the games resolution rather than trying to force the low res.  Try setting the res to 800x600 or higher.

I'm not about to dive to deep in this since I'm not an expert but it seems like you have OA installed in D:\Uninstalled-Software\Downloads\openarena-0.7.0/ and then I would assume the .cfg files to be located in C:\Users\Mike\AppData\Roaming\OpenArena/ most probably in a hidden folder. Mind you, I am not a Windows user either, but have a look if you've got nothing else to do today Wink

Hi Damiox, it sounds like direct rendering isn't enabled on your system. If you open up a terminal and type:

"glxinfo | grep direct"

It will probably say no. This means that all your OpenGL stuff is being done in software. Openarena won't run with software OpenGL by default because it's very slow. If you start openarena in a terminal with

"openarena +set r_allowSoftwareGL 1"

it should work as is but don't expect more than 5 fps. Smiley

Intel integrated graphics are supposedly very well supported by the open drivers. I'm surprised direct rendering didn't "just work". You'll need to get that sorted out. Let us know what you find.

Hi Damiox, sorry if this is a stupid question but did you enable the restricted driver coz from looking at your output it seems you don't have it enabled. Your output should look like the following. You should have no reference to Mesa driver in it either.

kr3am@core2-desktop:~$ glxinfo
name of display: :0.0
display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: Yes
server glx vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
server glx version string: 1.4

Try this,
System=>Administration=>Restricted Drivers Manager
Then check the box to enable it.

The Nvidia 5 series works very well in Ubuntu so don't give up and get a new mobo coz u don't need to. If you still cannot get it to work give us some more info and im sure someone can sort it.

I just took a look at your friends Vista problem and i think that the main point where it is going wrong is.

GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...GLW_ChoosePFD( 32, 24, 0 )
...35 PFDs found
...GLW_ChoosePFD failed
...failed to find an appropriate PIXELFORMAT

Then it tries to use Glide which is defunct, so it spits out

WARNING: missing Glide installation, assuming no 3Dfx available

Try using the vendors drivers instead, if any. Also try uninstalling drivers then re booting, re install drivers, re boot again, M$ likes u to re boot a lot.
Check to see if hardware acceleration is enabled or too low a setting.
Having dual monitors enabled messes with OpenGL as well.
Deleting the q3config.cfg is also a good idea when u change any hardware settings, coz it re makes it fresh for you.
Also take a look in the CMOS settings to see how much RAM has been allocated to the video, assuming your friends laptop doesn't have dedicated RAM, you should have at least 16mb.
Let us know how you get on.

damiox@damiox-desktop:~$ glxinfo

display: :0  screen: 0
direct rendering: No (If you want to find out why, try setting LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose)

Verify that you have 'libgl1-mesa-dri' installed.

Hi Damiox, I just tried OA with Debian on old Pentium 3 with Intel 815 integrated graphics, and to my my surprise, I had no direct rendering support either. I checked my log Xorg log at /var/log/Xorg.0.log and found a message that with that GPU, DRI was only supported with video at 16bit screen depth while I had it set at 24. I changed my screen depth to 16, restarted my Xserver, and  I now have hardware 3d acceleration on that machine. Openarena is now playable (Intel graphics are slow but MUCH faster than software rendering).

I have no experience with Ubuntu but I think checking your color depth and restarting your Xserver is worth shot. Smiley

As an aside, that Geforce5 (is that one of those Geforce FX boards?)  should be a lot faster than your Intel IGP.  Nvidia has good reputation for quality drivers in the Linux community.  If the board is in working order, it's probably worth a little bit of time to set it up. I suspect it's fast enough to run OA at decent frame rate without having to turn off too much of the gingerbread.

Geforce5 is slow however, so slow it's better to use a Geforce2 instead. Tongue
It SHOULD work in linux though, don't change your motherboard - install and use the restricted nvidia driver.

I should also split this thread and move both to snafus since ubuntu isn't vista

asking when OA3 will be done won't get OA3 done.
Progress of OA3 currently occurs behind closed doors alone

I do not provide technical support either.

For Windows Vista, it's well known that it was designed to drop OpenGL and restrict users to use DirectX 10. I know that finally it has some support for it, but really I think noone here can help you, you should ask on a Windows Vista forum, particularly the ones dedicated to create games.

For Ubuntu, it's a real mess to make OpenGL work (but usually its harder with ATI, with GeForce it should work like a charm o_O).
Anyway you have several tutorials on this subject in Ubuntu official wiki and forum. Try by installing compiz, there are tutorials explaining how to install this wonderful desktop and OpenGL, you should at least find one tutorial working for you there. When compiz will work, first you will be quite pleased to see one of the first next-gen desktop, and OpenArena should work then.

Some links you could use:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper?highlight=%28nvidia%29 <- I advise you to take a look here first
http://chromakode.blogsome.com/2006/02/16/howto-compiz-xgl-on-ubuntu-for-the-morbidly-lazy-2
http://blog.eax.fr/index.php/2006/05/31/84-tutorial-xgl-compiz-sous-ubuntu
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion?highlight=%28compiz%29%7C%28fusion%29

Restricted NVidia drivers install:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedDrivers/NVIDIAOfficial?highlight=%28nvidia%29
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia?highlight=%28nvidia%29
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedDrivers/NVIDIA?highlight=%28nvidia%29 <- This one tells you the packages you should use

Be warned, legacy/open Nvidia drivers don't support 3D, you have to use proprietary ones.

French links:
http://doc.ubuntu-fr.org/compiz_fusion
http://www.commentcamarche.net/forum/affich-4283645-probleme-compiz

The last one is particularly interesting. Here's a translation:

Quote
You probably forgot to install XGL:
sudo aptitude install xserver-xgl

This is necessary to have a graphic card with "direct rendering" enabled, to know if that's the case, type:
glxinfo | grep -i render

If it returns:
direct rendering: Yes
Then it's good, else you know what's wrong.

Later:

Quote
If you don't have direct rendering enabled, you can try to install nv open drivers first:
sudo aptitude install nvidia-glx-new

And later install proprietary ones by doing:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

At this step you should now have direct rendering activated.

Be careful with these commands, but don't give up this problem has been largely discussed in Linux world you should find a solution.

make a shortcut to openarena.exe (could be a .bat file too)
in shortcut properties make- "/openarena.exe +set r_mode 4"
r_mode 4 is for 800x600 resolution. could experiment with mode 5, 6 or other
similar in linux
