Title: Making videos:SOLVED
Post by: w1zrd on July 24, 2007, 08:17:56 AM
I'm undergoing some sort of re-development of my attitude towards shooting people (in OA) and instead I tend to enjoy training other people in various fields like manoeuvring, jumping, rocketjumping and trickjumps. The drawback for me in the game is obviously that I have to repeat everything for every new individual that joins one of my training sessions, and explaining the same required angle for a proper plasmajump 25 times/day can, and is, a little bit of a fools errand. I do have very helpful people helping me teach others, but one idea of mine is to record videos/demos of the steps, and how to perform it, then stream it out from something like youtube or google videos and simply post them on a common website.

Yes I know that I can use /record [name] and /stoprecord and this works well, especially since I run a defrag server, but for a complete beginner to go through the process of downloading a dm_68 file, entering /demo [name] in the console, it is a daunting task! Trust me, I've seen it.

So, is there anyone here who has the knowledge/skill to convert a simple .dm_68 demo to formats like .avi or .mpg? I've read about doing it from screenshots but I doubt that this would not be as good as a /timescale 0.5 recorded demo. Help appreciated..

That's a great idea !
But I doubt you really could easily convert those "records" to classic movie formats... But you can still try to use video capture programs. I tried with CamStudio (but it only works correctly with windowed stuff, fullscreen may be a bit err... slow). I once had very good echoes about Fraps (http://www.fraps.com/)... maybe you should try.

Command                 Description
video <filename>       Start video capture (use with demo command). Outputs to filename.
stopvideo                Stop the video capture.

That's neat! I wasn't aware about this ^^

use fraps, then use winavi to convert to smaller files.

check out my vids here. no editing, just played music along with the fights.

Would you know any alternatives that run under *nix, or is fraps/wine the only solution?

[update:] I finally got hold of nice solution which includes running the /video and /stop video on a playing /demo, then a simple conversion with mencoder and the following options:
Quote
mencoder -ovc xvid -xvidencopts fixed_quant=10 -vf eq2=1.5 -oac mp3lame -lameopts br=96 -o finally_this_works.avi video0001.avi
Thank's Tr3B & GrosBedo for helping me with this :)
