I prefer Rocket Launcher, as I have a crappy aim, but I also utilize the Railgun (because I try to improve my aim).

Ditto. Rocket Launcher gets me kills, because my aim sucks. But there's nothing more satisfying than a spot on railgun kill >  |

long range: railgun
medium range: rocket launcher
short range: railgun or lightning gun
only if projectiles were delagged in vanilla OpenArena... on servers with 150+ ping for me, rocket launcher and lightning gun become way too lagged to be useful.

My personal favorite is Railgun but the question on the poll was which weapon is better? And the answer is Lighting Gun. Kills quickly, helps clears crowds/campers and able to push allies. Not other weapon can do all these.

short range: railgun or lightning gun
I wouldnt use railgun for short range unless you are uber good. Shotgun, Gaunt or LG would be appropriate. |

railgun, it can kill most opponents instantly (and you have to "work" for it with good aiming - it always feels like a reward hitting with rail ) |

I guess it really depends on when/where you use it.
Close Range: Shotgun (Easy kill)
Mid Range: Lightning Gun (Hard to survive while getting shot at with this)
Long Range: Rocket Launcher or Rail Gun (Easy kill, again)
This is just my opinion, obviously...
