Title: Open Arena Tournament
Post by: TheJoker on June 29, 2013, 03:49:47 PM
Hey,

I've been playing for a few years now although not very active on the forum so unsure if this already exists..

Has an Open Arena Tournament ever been considered?

I.e: Different categories and then the best player from each? E.g. All weapons, All rockets, All insta, etc...

I'm sure there probably has been something like this, but just assumed if it had I would of got involved in such a thing?
Would just be cool to see how many old players might get involved as well...

If there was some kind of incentive/reward you might be able to attract good players from Quake Live as well...

Sometimes, OpenArena events have been organized. However that's something more organized by third-party servers and clans than by the developers themselves.

Of course, more of them would be welcome.... but for the ability to estabilish proper "prizes", I fear that may be difficult for an almost zero-budget indie game...
If it's hard to find someone who organizes such events, I fear that finding someone who places real money into them sounds unlikely.

Yeah, have been involved in clan matches, etc.. Although there doesn't even seem to be many of them around anymore, only on AS.

Ah well, shame.. Just coming from an experienced OA player, the gaming side of it seems to of gone downhill since the last update - we've lost a lot of players, and pretty much all the clans are non-existent now, at least to the point of it being pretty much impossible to even organize clan matches.

I see your point though, although if the gaming community used to be thriving, I see no reason it can't be revived again.

Seems to me as if the developers of the game seem to be a little out of touch with their audience and unfortunately it's showing...

This site is mainly concerning the development of the media content itself. I wouldn't have any time left to produce anything if I try to keep track of the player scene.

Joker, if you are in contact with active players and clans, and maybe also some server admins, why don't you try to persuade some of them to organize some event? Or may you try to organize it yourself?

OA needs more P.R. work... would you like to think about that?

PS: of course, I suppose NO money or other kinds of actual prizes would be there...

In the past versions .6.0 .7.0 and .7.1 there have been some tourneys that have given prizes. One person was giving cash prizes ( he never paid out ) and the other was hosted by Escaped Turkey. Their prize was a "No Ghost" Delagged server that fit 32 people Free for a year in OA, back when delag hitscan wasn't standard. They ended the tourney in the middle of it due to the fact they would not be making money form advertising in the game or something along those lines.

I'm actually quite shocked people asking for a reward on a tourney which is held on a free game.
They rather should feel honoured that they actually can play OA for no charges at all while it provides the gaming experience which OA does now.

An open-source game should never be based on a certain community, neither on particular individuals (the developers as exception). Events like a tournament are something from acommunity which actually doesn't quite fit in the development stroke (and shouldn't, isn't coding and such enough work?). That's why it should be kept at the community like clans and groups which organize such event.

The rewards were stated prior to the inclusion of a roster, so it was to drive the collection process for the tournament... At least thats how I recall.... I think another tournament would be a great idea with a good organizer heading it. The question is are there enough clans(or teams) to populate such a tournament to take it beyond a 2 or 3 tiered bracket and what kind of tournament would it be? 4v4 3v3 8v8 Duel?
