Title: which baseoa to use?
Post by: killing joke on October 08, 2007, 01:53:37 PM
hola all!

i installed OA via apt-get on my xubuntu 7.04 labtop (Acer TravelMate 2420)

so far i found 2 baseoa directories:

/usr/share/games/openarena/baseoa/
with the pk3 files in it
and:
/home/user/.openarena/baseoa/
containig q3key, qkey, q3config.cfg

so far so good. i can start it properly and all, but when i try to add models and maps the are not recognized. first i put them in /usr/... and when they didn't appear, i tried the baseoa in my home dir. -> no effect.
for some reason, I cannot use any of my q3a pk3's.

i am thankful for any tips or hints!

Both directories should work. There's a list of loaded PK3s in game console (use PageUp/PageDown to scroll in game console or run OA from terminal and read the list after you quit the game). If you can't see your PK3s, then either they're not valid ZIP files or you've put them somewhere else. Quake3 does NOT scan subdirectories for PK3s!

well, the tilde key (i hope thats english ;) anyway, the one left of 1) doesn't open the console (like it normaly does in quake3). therefor i am not able to tell.
seems to me, there is something wrong with my installation. hence i am going to uninstall it and reinstall it the old school way (est: not with apt-get).
maybe that'll do it...

Quake3 on Linux doesn't translate input keys to US qwerty like on Windows. Any other keyboard shortcut which produces ~ will work (ie. AtlGr+A on my Czech keyboard with latin layout).

You can also run OA from xterm or any other terminal and read the list there after you quit the game.

In addition to next_ghost comments on the ~ key.

If ~ is a dead key on your keyboard, you can use shift+Esc to open the console. I personally disable dead keys as there are lots of problems with them.

EDIT: But now that I think about it I am not sure that it can be a dead key.
