Title: "mouse" problem with 0.8
Post by: dash9 on August 22, 2008, 10:07:28 PM
Hi, At random times but annoyingly often, while playing, the character suddenly looks down. This started happening as soon as I used v0.8. Any ideas what's wrong or how it can be fixed?

Do you use an optical mouse ? Sometimes if you don't have a good tap it makes it go funky.

It's a laser mouse on a good mouse pad. As I was saying, it did not happen with 0.7.7 the same day or the day before or ever. I'm using Ubuntu 8.4 64.

So this is a new problem.. I hoped it's already known.

Thanks.

It could have been me, your username sounds familiar when I think about the time it happened.
So I tried v0.7.7 and it is fine, the problem is only in v0.8. :(

i find this happens to me only when i switch window back to oa after alt tabbing away from it, i assumed it was because of the big change in position from the last read, like its left over some positional information from before the switch and continues after.  maybe could give a clue to why to someone who knows the internals.  when it did that no joypad plugged in but now i have one plugged in and no joypad enabled in oa.  i kind of thought this wasnt a problem at first because it was only when switching windows but i guess i was wrong.

I get it too now. Just sticks in one place and have to do an in_restart.

When it happens to me I only have to move the mouse to ..look up. So my problem is that from time to time the view direction changes (to "down" - I haven't figure yet whether it also moves to the left or right), but nothing gets blocked.

The mouse sensitivity is fine.

It also happened once when I was not moving at all. I'll try to start a game with zero bots and see if in the morning the character looks down.
Anyway, what I noticed was that the character looks down, and also 90 degrees left or right.
If anybody is interested I could provide a demo..

EDIT: I left it overnight (with the mouse plugged) but the character was looking where I left it.

I played with a Dell mouse and it happened with this one, also. So it's not because of the Logitech mouse I'm using.

I'll try closing applications, even though from the few I'm running I know none that could steal the focus. But if another application manages to steal the ..mouse focus, is there a mechanism OpenArena is using to get it back? Anyone knows anything about this?

I have demos with this happening, but rather than decyphering a demo I'd change some code.. I guess it isn't very difficult to add some debugging code which would check when the view direction changes and print a "W4RN1NG" if the angular speed is ridiculously high. Any tips for where I could place this code? Any other suggestions are welcome; thanks!

Another thing I could try is to boot using an older Ubuntu CD and check if it the problem still appears.

The problem still exists in OA 0.8.1, but I have to thank the OA team because legacy/openarena-legacy.x86_64 works fine. Thanks!

Yeah I'm having this problem with my Wacom Graphire 4 as well.
What OS are you using? Are you using a pen or a mouse on the tablet?

I updated to Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 64 and the problem seems to be gone.
