0.8.5 RC2 is taking forever as it shouldn't, so okay the next 0.8.5 is going to be the final one, then i'll probably have 0.8.6 and 0.8.7 soon after maybe highly likely. My procrastinaty unmotivated time lacking behavior isn't doing too well for OA or any of my other projects (see: 2009)
I also haven't seen enki do art since late 2008 too, that can also play a strong factor in the media. All that awesome artwork in OA in 06-08 is thanks to him.
I hate to have to keep the players waiting for so long for a released patch they deserve, as it makes me feel guilty.
(I still don't have msys/cygwin to compile engines with (to get that lens flare in the official oa engine binaries once and for all), but my windows slowdown bug that plagued me since 2009 has finally been taken care of fyi. It turns out it was TortoiseSVN and Virtualbox device drivers all along!)

What exactly is missing? Is there a way I could help compiling the binaries? I'm dual booting Windows XP (Msys and MinGW installed, I need them for FontForge) and Debian Lenny. Is it an easy task like grabbing the sources from SVN, compiling and ready, or the sources need some hacking?

The binaries and source in openarena-engine-*-0.8.x-14.* does contain the OOFlare stuff.
I cannot compile much for the time being... I have just moved and my desktop has not yet moved with me.

The binaries and source in openarena-engine-*-0.8.x-14.* does contain the OOFlare stuff. It doesn't have my changes for light flares though. I added some fading for the broken dynamic light flares and a slower fade option (more like Unreal). The reflection1 should be default 0 too sudo apt-get install mingw32-runtime mingw32-binutils mingw32
Fortunately, Windows doesn't have apt-get (thank god)

Is the pk3 ready and frozen? I have some stuff ready which I could release in a few hours: They probably don't need revisions, but should I post them directly into the SVN commits or rather elsewhere? It's not a problem if it's too late, they could be in the small patches for 0.8.6 and 0.8.7.

Disappointed for the mac version, will mean several packages, confusion ... Also, IIRC jackoverfull was able to do the job well, then some small disturbance made that work go away. Also, deadlines don't mean much if they are varying. Not easy I guess. What are the plans for next versions ? Will they contain everything which has been made so far as a patch ? It may not be a bad thing, we'll first have to adapt to 0.8.5 and its new options first, then new stuff will come.

A release sounds nice to me, but many players use mac iirc. Why hurry up now with speed that is not neccessary?

Can OA switch back to 67 protocol (there's almost no 0.7.1 servers left http://dpmaster.deathmask.net/?game=openarena&showplayers=1&oldprotocol=67) or 68, so we have advantage of using GTV? A release sounds nice to me, but many players use mac iirc. i know 3 in our clan so i guess we'll have to stay 081 then :/ +1 in our clan.

The protocol will not change from 0.8.1 to 0.8.5 for backward compatibility. This means the 0.8.1 Mac binary will still work. Jackoverfull did post a binary some time ago ( http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=3374.msg27978#msg27978) but it is without the latest flares and possibly affected by the single player save bug. I have not asked jackoverfull to compile an engine for some time because I constantly knew there would be another later. I saw he was online today so if fromhell has the source he can properly compile an engine.

Given what my clan mates have posted on our forums, I think we are almost an entirely-Mac clan.
But I've been using the RC1 patch since the day it came out (and I think some of my clan mates have as well) with no problems...so unless something has changed a lot, I don't see any issues with this release.
Actually, I'll just ask. What has changed from the first patch (about 6 November 2009)?

I believe there are a lot of fixed shaders. In the VM files a serious crash was solved (server dropping all clients), a problem with the weapon bar if the hook was used and a problem with some serverinformation not being sent was fixed in the engine. Other changes are "just" features.

Upping right now. I AM GOING TO MISS A LOT OF STUFF THAT I HAVE NOT PUT IN, I DO NOT HAVE THE TIME TO CHECK IF I SWEARED UP AT THIS MOMENT. I AM NOT GOING TO SUDDENLY PUT IN EVEN MORE CONTENT AND CHECK FOR PROBLEMS IN THAT. LEAVE THAT FOR 0.8.6+.
by the way, 0.8.5 rc1 didn't extract to openarena-0.8.1. Why didn't no one tell me about that?
Also 0.8.5 has one snuck in change - better team skins for angelyss. Angelyss's skimpyiness was a huge problem regarding team colors, so I did some color curves adjustment for her skins. Dark skins got the same treatment.
And finally, that additional beret skin Headcrash was intentionally fullbright, i fixed that I think. I assumed it was meant to be a forcemodel brightskin cheat trying to get under my radar.
I'll commit the patch's content to svn once I get friggin TortoiseSVN installed, its the only one i like, rapidsvn has the worst commit function ever.
I AM GOING AWAY FOR 4 DAYS.

THIS IS NOT THE PRIMARY DOWNLOAD LINK, I WILL DELETE THIS:' http://openarena.ws/rel/085/oa085p.zipSomebody mirror this now, the catch is you must also have a download counter or I won't care. This is not because of me though... I honestly don't care how many download it or not. the worst part of doing releases is attempting to write presentable news with unbroken english, and arranging media screenshots unique for it. I do not even have the time to do that PR stuff right now. Second worst part is having to maintain a full linux install just to pack the archive with proper permissions set. I probably even forgot a credit or two in the CREDITS file I forgot to amend the file with... but eh if i did then i'm not redoing this damn file.

Downloaded. I've found that the pk3 file has the same name as the old RC1. :S

and if I didn't do that then we'd have all sorts of stupid conflicts. It will be annoying when 0.9.0 comes out to have blank pk3s in the names of the 085/6/7 patch pk3s jsut to cancel the outdated patches
