Title: No files to download
Post by: Case on October 09, 2008, 08:07:25 AM
I understand it was pulled due to license issues, but anyone that doesn't have a problem with this probably already has OA installed. This may be temporary but it does turn away new users. If OA needs someone to tar (or zip for the windows users) the source from a previous release or the svn code so that new users can easily play, I'll be more than happy to do it.

The point, as far as i se it, is that 080 cannot be the "official release", because it has non-frre textures (or not?) and 07* cannot be there neither, because that would mean further splitting of the community and newbies in older versions. You know, Basic Functions Users do not like upgrading their SW...

New and old users will not be able to find 0.8.0 here.  This is to be expected.

If they want to find 0.8.0 at a site that hasn't removed it, nobody's going to stop them -- it simply won't be considered an official release.

I don't want to put up earlier releases on the main page. One of the problems in the past is that people went for the earlier release first before the current one because it was downloadable on the page. I only do current release listings on the page and there is no current release yet so hm

p.s. my release date is 'asap'. I'm only waiting for binaries (COME ON JACK THOMPSON WHERES THOSE WORKING LEGACY BINS)

Ah, so it's on its way? Good news, thanks.

Yeah. I feel guilty leaving potential fans bummed out of an unavailable game :(

i HIGHLY DO NOT RECOMMEND CHECKING OUT THE SVN TO PLAY THE GAME

1. it eats more bandwidth than good
2. checksum protection will break on online servers
3. it's a waste of time. for developers only

You misunedrstood me. When I recommend a game to a friend, I send him/her the link to homepage, saying "dowload it there, install it and let's frag." Now I'm like Here's the homepage, BUT if you really wanna play, Use The Fantastic Google to find a download and hope it wo't be malwared."

Members here host them too, i've always used these  :

http://download.tuxfamily.org/openarena/rel/
they should't host oa 8, someone may consider it as warez
it is violating cgtextures license(and probably GPL)
and that is why fromhell unreleased it?

It seems license violation is not that obvious, so this package was left.

People zipping/sending files or downloading from unknown sources because they have no alternative is dangerous and irresponsible imo. They might just end up with real warez. To me the texture issue is just a religous GPL thing. Last week I connected to a server which had q3 sounds which uploaded to baseoa. The sounds only initialized another day and were present on every server I connected to. I figured out why before I had a look in the baseoa folder but for other people it might be less obvious.

And this is bad, and "pure" is meant to prevent from it.
But you may have noticed it is sometimes bypassed for strange reasons ... (i.e. if the faulty .pk3 was loaded on an unpure server, then connect to a pure server afterward it can sometimes stay in memory)

These GPL issues aren't religious, there are just rules in which we trust and we stick to them and invite everyone to do so. It especially pisses off if others' unawareness spoils our own effort.
It has to be taken seriously, because this is why a project like openarena has sense. If you're not into free software and want some quality content, just crack quake 3 in the whole instead of taking parts of it into OA. I think these guys want to do well by improving what OA lacks but it would be better if they instead used their own creativity, and produced opensource content as, it normally was their choice by downloading OA, they have some sympathy with free software projects.

I just think these guys don't really know what they were doing when starting their game. I dont think it was any bad intentions, I don't think it will be the last time either.

the issue shouldn't be about the GPL the issue should be that new players wanting to play this game don't have the ability to play right now. Thats the only thing I'm worried about right now. Shouldn't the issue already be out of the svn server?
