Title: Ping vs Skill Post by: chaoticsoldier on October 25, 2008, 08:35:25 AM Supposing two players are of equal strength, what would the difference in their pings have to be before one player experiences a distinct disadvantage?
Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: PsYthe on October 25, 2008, 08:37:06 AM I can tell you I have a very hard time with 100+ ping, but yesterday when I had 40-60 ping it was a breeze. I use cg_delag if that matters.
Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: menganito on October 25, 2008, 01:54:44 PM I'd say 30-40 difference is notable. It's less (20-30) for rocket launcher/nailgun/plasma players and more (60-70) for railers and hitscan weapons users (if the server is unalagged)

Well, the laggers can be really hard to defeat, because you basically have to guess where they are at the given moment :DAnd people who have high ping always can get accostumed to it and lead their shots more, so it might even be a slight advantage. Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: chaoticsoldier on October 31, 2008, 08:00:25 PM Generally for me 50 ping is still fine. But I guess it also depends on how much experience you've had with lag. I often play on foreign servers with 250+ ping.
I played one guy about a week ago who implied that the only reason I was winning was because my ping was lower than his (≈18 vs ≈34). Could that small difference be a reasonable excuse? Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: Fitacus on November 01, 2008, 01:22:03 AM Was it Falkland the ping whiner?
Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: chaoticsoldier on November 01, 2008, 05:15:18 AM It wasn't.
Title: Re: Ping vs Skill Post by: Cacatoes on November 01, 2008, 06:53:37 AM There are so much conditions which affect your gameplay ... Sometimes I just don't know if its my mood, my mouse, my ping, luck, or the players against whom I play ;-)
I happen to have ~20ms of ping sometimes, and when that's the case i'm quite efficient with minigun, game also seems to be more "fluid" or maybe it's my imagination. I still have good results when the server is unlagged and got a worse ping (60, 80, or much more), but not as good as with low ping. At this point I can easily make someone fall into space for expl, and it's a way to kill someone who has, let's say 40 of ping may not have (I think it can affect that much, maybe some maps make ping doesn't matter as much as others) If you can't overcome someone who has a slightly better ping than you, then how could you pretend to be significantly better than him if you had the same and won ? We're not predictable machines. Maybe he had a better mouse than you or you had worse FPS ? Nevermind :D Fact is he lost and got frustrated ... :P |
