Title: 0.9.0 player model/skin todo

i do have a roadmap on the wiki, but not many read it. but for models this is what i want to do for oa0.9.0
- enhance all models animations (I just learned the action panel and editing keyframes, all this time i've been animating blindly!) I really hope I can do this, or at least get help on this from experienced Blender animators
- Retire Rai's bunny suit in favor for some festive body paint like this (http://openarena.ws/crap/bdypaint.jpg)?
- Redo Ayumi from scratch (probably taking the midriff baring design for the sake of polygons, maybe jenna could make a comeback)
- Redo Major from scratch, with a total reconcept as well (better outfit, ethnic neutral face for more versatility also)
- Beret getting a black spinoff skin (like sarge/roderic)
- Beret also getting a death robot spinoff skin too?
- Sorceress human skin, not the dark elf (but dark elf will still be there)
- Get voice actresses for all the female players, instead of recycling the same old voice
- Tweak all player sounds, make them more audible/less lame (compress)
- Add stilgar's book dropping stuffs to the death noises for corpse thumps (this will give the game a lot of life)
- Censored angelyss/arachna/sorceress for non-mature pk3
- Remove angelyss/nekoyss, replace with new model
- Make funk man
- Make 80s man

Just some comments on the model.

Great idea
Torso may be bareskine only armarmor make torso nice with big muscles
Hand that holds shield wil look better when it makes a fist  (or turn the shield into a handbagg :P )
Nice idea that gladiator model!!

Id like to see a model kinda like ayumi with longer hair and a long dress no feet visible,sort of gothic dress now i come to think of it.  Name Gothicate ??? :D

maybe neko should have her own model instead of crappy hijacks of others. that way i can save polys on angelyss by having the collar, ears and tail removed, plus i get to play around with fur alpha planes.

I'm taking this semester off due to upcoming life changing events so I'd really like to use my new found free time to contribute.

I'm still a blender noob but I'm reading an e-book called "Blender: noob to pro" so I'm hoping thats not just a catchy title like the time I read "C++ in 21 days." I couldn't even read through the whole book in 21 days much less learn anything, but I digress.  What I really want is to find a happy medium between learning something new and actually doing something that I actually know well enough to be of some help. 

If you have some low hanging fruit on the todo list I could start there.  Obviously that's all relative to your skill set so here's my list in order from most skilled to least skilled: Drawing by hand, drawing with pen tablet, editing graphics in gimp, creating graphics, programming, scripting, character modeling or skinning, map making, quantum physics, and strafe jumping+shooting.

Thanks to the guys in the #blenderchat on irc I at least know now that you can't use the sculpt tool with 7 subversions if you want to make models for games so there's hope for me yet even though modeling is down there close to quantum physics on my skill list.  And as soon as I find the right file format converter I might try to convert the model from my ikea kitchen planner into a playable level, ha, bloody ikea and their closed source decorating software. 

Anyway, that's my two cents/mini introduction.

Textured mapmodels would be appreciated.

Things like teleporters, lamps, floodlights, sconces, floating skulls ;), decoration, stuff to spread out

You need an md3 exporter plugin for blender and texturing skills.

i'm trying to make her appear even more partial feline than previous incarnations (SHES MUTATING!!!!)

Rai with body paint would be cool, but do you really need to get rid of the Bunny Suit? I really do like that bunny suit.:P

Black Beret would be awesome, and Death Robot Beret would be even awesomer!

I liked the cat people from the old crpg Albion. Clothing was more an ornament than cover.

A human with extreme mental problems believing she's a cat and will be a cat when she can afford it. 2 years in OpenArena and being a popular skin to use online(now her own model), storywise she has 'earned' enough profit in order to afford implants (silicone in her breasts, anime iris contacts) and transplants (on her head, face and skin, and a tiger's tail).

It's sort of a parody on the furtaku/fursuiter/anthro community and what they fantasize in including anime and obsessing over japan peoples (Some even prominently advertising faux-Japan locations and nationality because it's 'cool').
It's also sort of inspired by Hide's Marygold model (http://skincity.beyondunreal.com/sections/show_model.php?id=364) for UT2k4.

(There's a tvtropes link that should belong here, but don't know which.)

if she wants feline features - what's the deal with the enormous breasts? it looks clumsy and far from the agility that i imagine a cat would have. of course there are fat cats too, but i doubt they would fight in the arena ;)

a better idea for a 'widowe' is to supergoth up one skin with bright gray skin, black tattooing, etc.

I think her eyes are a bit too big now. Proportionally speaking, they look more like frog eyes in terms of size.

Your character description is pretty funny. I had previously assumed neko was part of a fantasy cat-human race.

I really like the head. It looks like anime character's face doing a cat expression. The mix of cuteness and repulsiveness makes me cringe. :)

I agree with pulchr, the boobage seems too big for a cat. The largeness gives me a sense of clumsiness, which is not a quality I tend to associate with cats. Buy then again, neko is not really cat.

Probably not where you want to go, but it might be cool if her body modifications were incomplete. You might see hasty stitches with open wounds (like q2 strogg) , human flesh patches haphazardly covered with fursuit pieces, fake razor claws like "Batman Returns" catwoman, etc... etc...

A character who has made extreme sacrifices but only looks great in their own mind.


Do you intend to cover her up, or is she to flaunt the goods?

it's a handicap to make her catgility bogged down for ingame fairness.  If it were anything less than C cup she'd be way too good for the game. After 2 years of holding railguns and a year of BFG her abdominals are looking very toned this time around too

Probably not where you want to go, but it might be cool if her body modifications were incomplete. You might see hasty stitches with open wounds (like q2 strogg) , human flesh patches haphazardly covered with fursuit pieces, fake razor claws like "Batman Returns" catwoman, etc... etc...
The skin is mirrored though, so stitches would look very odd seeing them on both sides.

She will be covered somewhat (more modest than angelyss at least), but i'm on a brainfart to cover her with what. The thing is if i give her too much clothing she'll itch and groom compulsively. Too tight clothing will make her stiff and fall over. A sling would be most comfortable, but we already got our obligatory wardrobe malfunction fighter donning just that and stockings.

Hmm... well she could have more substantial clothing (like a blouse or yukata) but be open in the front. In Japan, she might just be too large for non-custom clothing and has to make do with what's available. While somewhat embarrassing, it gets her a lot of attention from the drunk salarymen, and she has fleas anyways?

Maybe she's a scary gaijin english teacher? She's followed her dream and moved to Japan. Unfortunately, none of the anime people live there and she is treated as an outsider. Undetered, she has surgery to try and blend in but sometimes people can still tell she's different?

Heh heh, kinda looks like Angelyss.

Huge assets + clothing on the torso seems to highlight it, making other parts of the body appear smaller than they really are. From that angle, the arms looks kinda stickish to me. Maybe if something bright was put on one of the arms (like a torc or armband), the effect would disappear.

 Still an issue? I know my way around the IPO and action editors. I've hacked the PAKs with QUARK and I gotta tell ya' "I'm not likeing the peices of MD3s that import without global origins. Angelis is one of the few that imports and animates in Blender. She's my fav anyway.

 I couldn't agree more. That Sara Conner idea is on the nose with the exception of a northern European facial feature workaround.

You're supposed to parent the pieces to their respective tags, like the torso goes on the tag_torso tag, followed by the head on tag_head.

I was using Blender 2.48a with an old MD3 import script. Probably just a bug. I'll sort it out.

I don't think Rai should change, her model is very good.

major is ok as she is aswell.

Bringing Back the Jenna model would be EXCELLENT!

I've just made new UVs for Angelyss's body mesh. With less 'seams' it'll be more friendlier to LoD down, easier to skin for (no breast seams)...and better shoulders! Oh and hair has moved to its own texture so the whole body wouldn't need alpha mapping, giving a slight boost to renderer performance and even saving a bit of texture memory. This might even open a possibility for her skin to have 'sexy baby oil gloss'

Next is 'porting' the skins to the new UVs which should be a snap as baking a texture through Blender.

You're going fix the shoulders? Awesome! To my eye, that was the weakest point in an otherwise strong model.

Sorceress's rig is slightly improved and her animations are more improved too.. for the torso at least. Her skin is also repainted in places

A side effect of fixing the rig was a larger cup size than intended, but eh whatever. Shoulders still suck.

Committed her to the SVN, still animating her. I learned BEZIER INTERPOLATION, so check out that unfinsihed run animation! Her boobs bounce! Her ears bob! Her tail wags! Her arms also have motion picked up from the movement! OMG!

For the next version could we have a new announcer with proper sounds ? Because theres no announcer sound for win/lose/introduce bots so it would be nice to have one :)

one texture = less video memory = less disk space to use! angelyss is one of the big 'hogs' of the games files, i want to do something about it.

Also thank goodness for clone layer because transferring the skins from old uv coords to the new is a minute's snap

Sergei? Maybe. He looks like edward cullen on stuff right now

Not a lot of shirtless/pantsless males in the game unfortunately. Sadly, the only Mr. Fanservice is Beret and Gargoyle

I did however improve the mesh of gargoyle during reanimation to get rid of that stupid boxtorso issue that makes him look like a fat wad of muscle. Looks much more leaner now (strangely close to asian bodybuilder physique) and I've edgesplitted around the muscle areas, lowered polies, improved his face among other things. (Uncut pack fans: also it's shorter, more covered, bit more tasteful now. If you think that's offensive... you haven't seen the game Dante's Inferno)

The new look to Gargoyle kinda reminds me of  the bad gremlins from the movie Gremlins. Anyway ever thought of giving him a scale skin ?

No but feel free to make one. I'm not doing new skins, just fixing the existing. For gargoyle the UV mapping is the same, so the skins made for it should be backwards compatible

Angelyss is sliced. Firstly I thought it was only the Dark skin, but the Angelyss variant shows that as well.

I suppose the DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/FAQ#Models_and_bots_designed_for_Quake_3]incomplete compatibilty with Q3A bots (http://([b) (that need to be hacked to be fixed) causes many beautiful 3rd party models designed for Quake3 not to be used in OpenArena by the users.... thus I think we should give to the users a wider select of default characters, instead of re-model and re-skin the same two or three "hot-babes" at every release. Obviously, IMHO.

By the way, is it planned to create models/bots with all the names of the models/bots from Q3A (even like simple "redirects" to existing OA models, like Sarge --> Grism), to improve compatibility with Q3A mods that search for them? Maybe similar redirects could even be done with maps...

Gig you I agree that maybe adding some new characters is good but before adding them we should try and make sure others will use them or else there is no point in having them. I mostly see people use Grism, Angelyess, Assassin and Skelebot the rest are largely forgotten. So we should try and figure out why people seem to like those characters and design future characters to incorporate things people like about those characters. The same goes for maps some people want more and more maps but there really is no point in making them if no one plays them most servers I play on seem to all have the same type of maps and I find the reason being is because they seem to flow and have good weapons placement and seem like they are more thought out than others.

Beret's face can be done better, no dubt. But models like Angelyss are already done better than some official characters like, for example, some from Star Trek Elite Force, IMHO.
