Is this fullscreen or windowed? Some systems will have problems with having different brightness in windowed mode. If brightness doesn't work, you can also run in windowed mode, open the (~) console, and run xgamma in a terminal (xterm) -- you should be able to adjust brightness this way in any window manager. I don't know how well this works on multiple screens (see the man page) or whether the brightness will stay adjusted when you switch.
