Title: Game too dark
Post by: JESUS SCOUSE on February 26, 2009, 05:30:07 PM
I am having problems with anew install of OA.
The game is far too dark to play.
I use Ubuntu and have a ATI Radeon 9200se video card.
Before I upgraded my Ubuntu and did a fresh OA install it as fine.
I presume it is a Ubuntu problem and have searched the forums but can't find anything.
Hoping you lot may be more helpful I am trying this post.
I have tried the usual stuff like changing brightness in options.
I have tried different settings for /r_gamma.
I use vertex lighting.
Any ideas?

You could try

r_mapoverbrightbits 3 or 4

r_gamma
r_mapoverbrightbits
r_overbrightbits
r_intensity

Are the settings in oa that deal with this. You will also find yoru graphics drivers probably have a way of managing screen brightness for specific applications.

it's a driver issue. Certain range of radeon drivers in linux has different video brightness method which isn't compatible with the renderer

r_overbrightbits 0 will help.

Yep, it's a driver issue. And not only happens in Linux, old versions of Catalyst in Windows have the same problem. I don't think I had this problem in Linux with the open source driver, but I may be wrong. It happened for sure with certain versions of fglrx. If you are using the propietary driver you may want to try a couple of different versions starting from 8.9 or so. If you use the oss one you can fill a bug report and try the latest ones from git. Fiddling with gamma settings or whatnot will aleviate the problem, but it's not a fix--and you'll get ugly looks anyway.

A radeon that isn't a 9000/9200 (Radeon 9500 (R300) and up is where ATI support starts to look great for OA)

A Geforce256 and up will also do great.
NONE of the 'budget' geforces will work good (fx5200, gf6200, gf7200)
