Title: demo version Post by: fromhell on April 10, 2009, 09:51:52 PM This is a stupid idea. Would there be any benefit on a reduced 'demo' version? Not necessarily as in 'selling' a full version, but as a convenient cut-down version with the popular essentials. Freedoom has a demo version.
Nexuiz has reduced third-party releases that cut it to the 50mb mark. Maybe it'd be a benchmark version too Title: Re: demo version Post by: andrewj on April 10, 2009, 10:38:05 PM A cut-down version would not be able to connect to public servers, even non-pure servers would give lots of problems.
So what then, make a LAN-only "OA lite" version? Not worth the hassle imho. Title: Re: demo version Post by: Case on April 10, 2009, 10:45:57 PM no.
Does the oa486 version have a smaller footprint? You could also reduce memory by just compiling the client and I'm sure there are other things. The idea of a demo only works with nonfree proprietary products anyways. Title: Re: demo version Post by: jackoverfull on April 11, 2009, 11:57:42 AM I don't think that a "demo version" would be a good idea.
It would mean no multiplayer or, worse, demo-limited multiplayer (thus further segmenting the player-base). Title: Re: demo version Post by: fromhell on April 11, 2009, 12:04:03 PM that's okay, i knew it was a dumb idea.
i'm just asking for if there's any benefit in it Title: Re: demo version Post by: KILLIE THE GREAT on April 11, 2009, 12:11:36 PM that's okay, i knew it was a dumb idea. ummm... NO, no benefiti'm just asking for if there's any benefit in it Title: Re: demo version Post by: 0kelvin on April 11, 2009, 03:00:40 PM openarena
Title: Re: demo version Post by: jackoverfull on April 11, 2009, 03:24:58 PM Maybe a download pack with just the essential to run one map of each gametype and one skin. And then?Title: Re: demo version Post by: Cacatoes on April 12, 2009, 05:28:06 AM Then if it's 8MB download you've got a quick way to see if your system runs OA, to perform benchmarks, to give the gameplay a try ..
Also, some guys are short in disk space or lazy to make some :D Some non-proplayer guys may also like a quick way to make a few frags during their break. If you explain well you will only be able to join servers with *that map*, there is no need to remove the internet support or to split the community ;) They'd be kicked on map change, but it's better than nothing ... There could always be needs, the problem is, is it worth the effort ? Title: Re: demo version Post by: jackoverfull on April 12, 2009, 06:03:38 AM 8 mb? The mac os x engine alone (no game, only the engine and its icon) is 10 mb…
the mac os x engine is a bit "fat", but i don't think that a demo would be less than 100 mb. Title: Re: demo version Post by: schumi_gr on April 12, 2009, 06:13:42 AM Current version size is 300 MB ,so a demo would be nonsense.Cant w8 for 300 MB then damn this is 2009 ,get a better connection.

Title: Re: demo version Post by: feLiZ_naVidAD on April 13, 2009, 07:52:07 AM my answer....maybe...
its more time to keep it up to date 2 versions... that the most fundamental point i guess, since you are the only packer of everything The demo version with just one model and less maps... maybe for the casual gamer who just want to try it out... Title: Re: demo version Post by: KILLIE THE GREAT on April 13, 2009, 09:39:50 AM yeh, but schumi would lap you anyway ;) i know the veyron is heavyer, but F1 car, with schumi or not, won't do 253 MPH, only gets up to 220 MPH aand if u drive F1 CAR u,ll get out, on fire (terrifing car) veyron, u,ll come out steamingTitle: Re: demo version Post by: schumi_gr on April 13, 2009, 02:50:12 PM Speaking technically yes Veyron has higher top speed but takes more time to get there and slow down, also F1 can have much higher top with a much less downforce set up.But when talking for laps F1 is much faster in corner and acceleration so overall quicker at a lap.But this comparison has no meaning anyway.
P.S. sry for off-topic Title: Re: demo version Post by: KILLIE THE GREAT on April 13, 2009, 04:34:01 PM Speaking technically yes Veyron has higher top speed but takes more time to get there and slow down, also F1 can have much higher top with a much less downforce set up.But when talking for laps F1 is much faster in corner and acceleration so overall quicker at a lap.But this comparison has no meaning anyway. as far as i know Buggati Veyron does 0-60 2.7 Seconds f1 car, i think in 1.55, your right, and about cornering, it's built for circuits, 16.4 just as a very fast Grand tourer. either way BOTH ARE EPIC CARS P.S. sry for off-topic apologies for off-topic talk |
