Title: Where are you?
Post by: poldie on January 25, 2010, 05:29:16 PM
It seems a lot quieter on the servers than 6 months or so ago.  Has everyone left to play QuakeLive?  Is OA 0.8.5 going to bring people back?    Or am I just on a the wrong times?

Well, personally, I got a job two months ago, so that kinda takes a lot of free time from me. It's the primary reason why I don't play OA as often as I did (I used to play for an hour on a daily basis for over 4 months, until I got the job). Nowadays, finding a server with actual people playing is difficult, and that bums me out. Hopefully, version 0.8.5 will provide me (and other people too) with more motivation for playing OA. It's really a nice game, and for Linux users (which I have also become about a year ago) it's one of the few decent free (as in freedom) games.

The decline might be due to midterms which I think are this time of year for high school students and college students. As for finding a server with people a good FFA server is Ciggaweed No Bitchassness usually has lots of people in the evenings and a good map selection.  Some other good ones are [Z] Fastweaps Small maps, 2 [Z] Fastweapons Small maps, and Digichalk 0. 8.1 and Cyberdump. Net OA Server. A good CTF server is at times hard to find but some good ones a [Z] Normal CTF Server and Openarena PL
As for the other modes they are all but forgotten and I rarely run into people playing on other modes besides FFA and CTF.

I'm taking classes in the afternoon now and don't have a lot of time to play.

This game should get a lot more publicity - QL is more popular but I quit it (as I didn't like lots of things about it) and found this one instead.

I had no idea this game existed - this is the best hybrid Quake adaptation I played.

See you in the game! :D

I've noticed the decline for a while as well. I primarily play CTF and most of the servers in CTF are gearing toward instagib gametypes instead of All Weaps. The main servers I play on (after 5pm EST) is Super,CTF, [Z] Normal CTF, /N/ CTF, FF server. I tried the GoD|Insta+rj server for the first time last night and it is pretty good. It gives you the best of both worlds. Rockets and Rails for instagibbing plus my favorite, the Gaunt.

I wish there was a way to turn off displyaing server with no one playing or just bots at play. The sight of seeing a bunch of empty servers look disheartening.

Well if you haven't noticed there aren't nearly as many North American players as there are EU players. Since i'm an American player i manly play after 6pm CST(Central Standard Time).

Super,CTF, [Z] Normal CTF, /N/ CTF, FF server, and defrag servers

Those are the main server's i play on. :)

Yes there are quite a few. Ciggaweed and Digichalk are the most popular ones.

Between real-life(tm), a rock and a hard place, procrastinating too much as well.

I'm not playing now due to being busy with studying and when I have a free time I rather use it for QL. I may come back if there will be some tourneys going on and my clan will have at least 4 active members willing to play OA again.

Still unlikely I will be playing on publics much.

I'm sure the player base will increase and more people will be on after the new release whenever it finally arrives.

I only keep playing OA for some easy duels. Mainly I'm focused on QL which is much more competetive and fun aswell.

Maybe someone can explain me, what "more competitive" means?
As long as i join an oa server, i usualy found players who are top on me and players, which can be handled by me.
There are also many clans which can be called to a fight - most of them known by the community, so you can exactly decide which challenge you need today.
In ql i mostly saw unknown players and clans and this is anoying to me.

On the other side: the oa community is this kind of small, that you know at least one player if you join a server.
Most of them are very neat.
This is the point to love oa: no anonymous challenges...

Size does not matter :)

imho

no

only for defrag I still play OA. RN|CPMruns has often people on it - or they connect few minutes after you vote a map :)
besides that...not even OA clanwars lately :(

Well, I just hate the fact that every server is pure, just every 3rd is DM and mostly all has brightskins. (The only problem with pure server that I use Digit and an old crosshair found on the forums somewhere and it reverts back to OA 0.8.1. I don't care about models, though.)

Where is OA 0.8.5?

Hmmm., maybe I was misunderstoo but I meant an RC1 server.

Out of curiosity - what will the new build offer? Like new maps, bots to play and perhaps graphics? :D

I did see the post around here somewhere, but just preferred the short version. :)

And to ans. the ? - I'll be right here playing. ;)

Well, RC1 doesn't include the Neko model, but all your other thoughts are correct.

I actually like major revisions, because I'll know which files of the huge pk3 archive will be no longer needed.

It does seem quiet to me, as well.

I don't think it's QL; the two games are pretty different, actually...those loyal to OA will likely stay with it unless something about the game really bugs 'em.

As for me, I'm usually found on instaCTF servers and have been trying to help out my clan...we're not having great luck getting people to join, so I'd have to agree that the online playerbase seems a bit smaller than it used to be.

Maybe someone can explain me, what "more competitive" means?

It means good brightskins, different visual effects for shaft and grenades, not p1cmiped weapons and models, timeout, removed cheatvantages such as possibility to use scripted rocket jumps and third person view etc etc. Good maps, suited for competitions (inc. maps for CA, TDM and 1v1). Lots of competitions going on and lots of clans to practice with. Also good weapon balance, so it's not mostly rail/shaft action.

As long as i join an oa server, i usualy found players who are top on me and players, which can be handled by me.

That's right but top QL players are incomparably stronger than OA ones, roughly saying.
I knew a few players that could be considered as pro in Q3, who played OA later, but all of them left as far as I know.

There are also many clans which can be called to a fight - most of them known by the community, so you can exactly decide which challenge you need today.

In my experience, it's not that easy to schedule clan war in OA. In QL it's possible to find opponent on IRC nearly any time, if you have enough players at that moment. Not only for CTF and iCTF, but also for TDM and CA.

On the other side: the oa community is this kind of small, that you know at least one player if you join a server.
Most of them are very neat.
This is the point to love oa: no anonymous challenges...

Yea, OA community is like a little village where everyone knows each other. That's cool :)
