Title: Can I add screenshots for mods to the Wiki site?
Post by: Gig on May 10, 2010, 11:06:59 AM
Hello. I wrote some pages about compatibilty for some mods for Quake 3 DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/ModCompat]in the Wiki site (http://([b). I'd like to put some screenshots of them in their pages (obviously playing them under OpenArena). Can I do it? Q3A Mods are downloadable for free, but probably they aren't under an "open" license... is this a problem?
What should I write as license in image description page?

If not talking about mods, can I add OpenArena screenshots to other pages of the site, simply mentioning GPLv2 license in file description page? Is there a specific "template" for that?

Another question. Is the title of one page I created, "DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Manual/Using_Mods]Using Mods (http://([b)", correct in English language? Or should I rename it to "How to use mods", "Use mods", "Mods use" or something else?

Let's see how it's dealt with on wikipedia then, heh:

For USA, falls under Fair Use.

French page of doom: no screenshot (one of freedoom). An image of Doom's logo, refering to some specific article of Intellectual Property Code ( http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fichier:Doom_Logo.png )

- Some screenshots of Free Software programs are considered "derivative works" and then are usually licensed the same than the original program. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Free_screenshot

===

Yes, I think "Using Mods" is fine.

So, can I just say that OpenArena is under GPLv2, and the specific mod's stuff included is shown as "fair use"?

By the way, I noticed that various wikis hosted by Wikia (http://www.wikia.com) does not follow images with the same attention of Wikipedia, and many images there have no copyright indication at all... I think there are various causes for this:
- Many Wikia sites haven't many stable contributors, so they aren't well organized and have few administrators;
- Many Wikia sites are "small" sites, compared to Wikimedia sites, they have not so many accesses and so they are less "under the spotlights" (as we say in Italy)...
- Unlike Wikipedia, many of them are not "localized" in various languages, so the need to follow all the laws in the world, other than US laws, is less focused (where maybe it should be more focused, instead?)...

Anyway, I'd like to do things the best way I can...

What if some third party site takes the screenshot and claims it's OpenArena especially if it's something radically different like Superheroes Arena?

Yeah, that's a danger.

If I'm not wrong, the website follows the country laws in which the hosting service is located.
http://www.wikia.com/Terms_of_use ; here it seems to be California laws.

Fair Use seems handy when it comes to reusing copyrighted material. I'd say go for it.

The OpenArena site is hosted in California as well so double bonus

Okay, so I will do it...

Okay?
(DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/ModCompat/Akimbo
(DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/ModCompat/Alternate_Fire
(DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/ModCompat/Rune_Quake_3

A question, talking about licenses. OpenArena main menu says "OpenArena(c) 2005-2009 OpenArena Team"... it that (c) compatible with GPLv2 license? Isn't it a litte misleading?

A question: is there a map where I can find all three weapons from Team Arena, to try it with a Q3 mod?
I know that "classic" Q3 mods don't recognize TA weapons (you don't find anything where they usually respawn), but I noticed that DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/ModCompat/Rune_Quake_3]Rune Quake 3 (http://([b) mod includes an extra weapon called "flametrower". I discovered it with "/devmap" and then "/give all" while I was testing the mod, but I can't figure out how it is supposed to obtain this weapon during standard play.
Maybe it replaces a weapon from Team Arena? So I would like to test Rune with a map that have all three of them (am_gamelvish only has nailgun, and it isn't it). Anyway, if it would be so, I can't understand how it could work with Vanilla (standard) Q3, its standard maps obviously don't include Team Arena weapons...

Q3Min did a test map (http://www.q3min.org/forum/cmps_index.php?pageid=gamedata) with all the items available, I think it's not a bad idea and OA could have it. They don't have Team Arena items though, but Vanilla OA has.
I don't know if some OA map has all 3 T.A. weapons.

There are several maps with the TA items in OA. Many in my mappack have all the TA stuff.
I've done one of these long ago, I should find it. It's a square with everything thrown in.

IIRC, fuzw.c considers Chaingun as the 11th weapon (Grapple was the 10th but the code is available in vQ3 as well). Try a map with chain on it, maybe it works.

Try a map with chain on it, maybe it works.
For example?
UPDATE: chaingun is in am_mckinleyish2... but in Rune Q3 there is nothing in the place of chaingun. I fear there is no way to use flamethrower (anyway, it is not so cool as it may seem).
