Post by: hyp3rfocus on August 19, 2007, 06:16:24 AM
i thought i'd have a crack at making a 3d openarena logo in blender. i think it turned out ok.

EDIT - better logo further down.

trust me, it's a pain to learn, but it pays off in the end.

ok, i'm reasonably happy with the shape now so i've moved on to the lighting and materials stage. i went for a metallic look with two white lights above on either side and a yellow light below.
(http://img03.picoodle.com/img/img03/9/8/19/t_008m_b9eb685.png) (http://www.picoodle.com/view.php?img=/9/8/19/f_008m_b9eb685.png&srv=img03)

it took a little while to render because it's got 6 levels of subsurf, x16 oversampling, mirror raytracing and it's 1400x1200 pixels. turned out ok though.

thankyou. not finished yet though, i wasn't happy with the lighting, so i've made this one with four lights.

i'm not sure about my modeling. i think the "A" part of the logo could be a bit beefier. anyone agree?

ok, i'll leave the A as it is and slim the ring down a little. do you like the lighting?

If you have a quick look in this thread (http://www.quakesrc.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=5358&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=45) you can see example of how it looked like from the start. The lightning is nice, but it could be a little bit brighter, or slightly move the highlights to give it a realistic metal surface. It looks really nice in the thumbnail view, but enlarged view is a bit orange in my opinion.

thanks for the link w1zrd, there were a couple of nice images there. i've got a better idea of what it should look like now. i agree on the lighting, it is a bit dull.

I don't like the lighitng either, then again i'm not a big fan of the 'glossy' post-2004 modern look

iOpenArena...

That sounds like something Apple would use so let them deal with that...

i've reworked this and i hope it's looking better.
(http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/4705/gold006yc0.th.png) (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=gold006yc0.png)
i removed the ring and remade it from scratch. instead of the weird flat, oversized one i now have a rounded one that is closer in thickness to the A.

the material i had been using was way too reflective which was why it needed so many lights. i've used a gold material that has less reflectivity and can be lit with a single light.

i'm not sure about where the ring joins the A, it flares out quite a bit. i might try it with a tighter radius.

right, i've tightened the upper radius where the ring meets the A so that it matches the lower one.

...and made the diamond slightly narrower and taller so that the line of the upper faces match the line of the A better. i also shifted the light to the centre to make the lighting more symetrical.

i didn't like the central lighting after all, so i've shifted it again.

i've ditched the single light and gone back to the multiple light setup.

the light on the A was a bit brighter than i planned, but i kind of like it.

The highlight is a bit bright (clear white) as it fades to background color a bit to fast. Either add a soft backlight with pale blue (opacity <15) or put a foamfilter around the white. Is it a directional spotlight you've put there? If so, try using a radial light to smooth out the edges it creates.

i'm going to do some more work with the lighting, but if anyone else want's to play with it here (http://www.mediafire.com/?fwxggv22sox) is the blend file.

I would prefer the ring to reach the top of the A.  I see how you are trying to make it like the ring for the quake 3 logo, but it doesn't work in my opinion.  It really makes the whole thing look dumb, but the logo similar to the one on sergei's hand looks really cool.
