Title: Map In Development Post by: Sausage on September 01, 2007, 07:39:38 AM I'm not on my laptop :(, But im on the PC That i have access to every weekend, and i have Q3A and GTKRadiant working :), but OA doesnt seem to run, but im not too bothered.
Attached to this post are some screenshots of what i'm in the process of making, and i would like comments and criticism, on how to make it better, ill also keep this thread updated each time i make a significant development. The screenshots are taken in Quake 3 Arena, Not Open Arena, so the textures wont be exactly the same, I know, But at least this gives you a good example of roughly what it'll look like. Also attached is a pk3 including just the .bsp so you may take a look in-game. But if you are going to look around, I advise you dont fall off the edges, or you'll be standing on a Texture bleed... (The bottom of the sky.) If anybody has any suggestions as to how This map (well, whats been made so far) can be altered, let me know! :D [To play the map you will need to extract the .zip into either the baseq3 or baseoa folder, then open either Q3A/OA, drop down the console, and type "/map ssgunnamed2"] Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: w1zrd on September 01, 2007, 07:51:23 AM You're skills have improved, that's for sure. I tried the map locally and I got lost (doh!) ;)
Seriously though, it could be worth considering making the stairs less steep (lower angle) since if you walk from the top of them, downwards, you will drop to the floor. What was really great was the quad placement, just perfect! It's not easy accessible and you are a bit exposed when reaching for it. However, if you are planning to make this a 1on1 (tourney) map, then I would suggest that you leave out the Quad completely since it is too powerful to be used in 1on1 games. Will be interesting to see this project take form, looks good so far. 2 thumbs up.. (tried it in OA and most textures were missing apart from a few rusty pipes and brown walls) Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: Sausage on September 01, 2007, 08:08:45 AM Thanks for the quick reply W1Zrd, Do you know of any custom texture packs i could switch to? Hopefully theyre in a similar style to the Q3A Base textures...
I used to map for doom, so it came naturally to become alot mor detailed, also, this is a really small section of the map, I intended it for about 3-6 people towards the end, it's gonna have an open up area somewhere. :D Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: dmn_clown on September 01, 2007, 08:23:07 AM Do you know of any custom texture packs i could switch to? The only GPL texture packs (that are clearly GPL) that I am aware of are the evillair textures available from Nexuiz (not from the hfx site, those are CC) and those available here. Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: w1zrd on September 01, 2007, 08:45:28 AM Here are some links to texture sites that I've used in the past, not sure if the links work or if they fall under GPL, but it's somewhere to look:

Whats everyone else's opinion on this Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: w1zrd on September 01, 2007, 08:58:27 AM THANKS! this'll keep me busy for a while, and to be entirely honest, i dont think it matters if the graphics here are GPL'd or not, as they are publically avaliable, i think it'd be okay to use. If you want your map to be included in a future Open Arena release, it needs to be licensed under a GPL licence (preferable GPLv2).Whats everyone else's opinion on this If you use textures that are copyrighted, then you are not able to take credit for it yourself and later release your map as GPL and you could get in trouble for breaching copyright infringements, for instance if you edit textures that states: may not be edited or redistributed but you make them brighter and include in your map. Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: Sausage on September 01, 2007, 09:09:23 AM So, basically, unless theyre GPL, they can't legally be released with OA, but what if it's released on it's own, with no texture modification whatsoever, would that be okay?

So, basically, unless theyre GPL, they can't legally be released with OA, but what if it's released on it's own, with no texture modification whatsoever, would that be okay? It really comes down to the textures own licence form and what they are derived from. For example, at http://www.mayang.com/textures/ you can read: Quote License In this case they say that it's (c) but you can use it. This doesn't tell us that this is GPL since a GPL licence isn't included. Anything that falls under GPL licence must include a copy of the agreement. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, I am far from an expert in this subject. These textures are Copyright (c) Mayang Murni Adnin, 2001-2006. They have all been taken by our own cameras or created by ourselves. Use: They are free to use for all uses, whether commercial or non-commercial (you may incorporate them into your derived work with no requirement to pay us any licensing fee etc). Your derived work must involve significant modification to the textures. It would be nice if you could credit us. Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: Sausage on September 02, 2007, 04:35:43 AM Good news. I have a friend on MSN Messenger whos a graphic artist, and he's gonna make me some textures, and said i can release them under the GPL Licence for him, and credit him. he even said that Openarena are allowed to use them as long as he's credited. :D
Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: hyp3rfocus on September 02, 2007, 04:43:31 AM it doesn't work like that. if you gpl something you cannot insist on being credited.
Title: Re: Map In Development Post by: Sausage on September 02, 2007, 04:44:23 AM Hmm, So, If it doesnt get GPL'ed, I can use it and credit him? or not...?
