Title: Mapping and Ethics
Post by: steauengeglase on September 27, 2007, 09:55:06 AM
Silly question, but I feel like I have to ask it. I'm a big fan of Mr. Fribbles EFDM maps from Quake 1. I'm working on a map that has a few elements "borrowed" from some of his maps. Now I'm trying to do as much as I can from scratch (new textures are taking me forever, so I'll probably end up using quite a few from the OA PAK files). Anyway, where do you draw the line between homage and ripping off? Also, should I notify the original author (even though I'm not touching any of his content)? Should I just scrap the whole thing for lack of originality?

Everything is based on something. As long as it isn't identical but has influences of his/her/anyone maps then it should be fine.

If you wish to credit the designer that influenced your map place it in the README.txt stating who influenced you.
