Title: red and blue team symbols in ctf
Post by: pulchr on December 12, 2007, 12:20:44 pm
i was wondering if anyone has been thinking about adding team symbols to openarena. something like the hammer and the lightning in the threewave mod?

for banners, textures etc...

That should happen for 0.8

Yes. I've been tinkering with the idea of "porting" (notice the quotes) Thunderwalker. Nothing serious though.

So far I only have an airfist, vaguely similar decals, and a few textures. My biggest problems is why make a mod no one (read 2 of whom would probably be original TW players) will play?

what do you mean make a mod no one will play?

i meant creating symbols for the teams and then they could be used in all ctf maps for open arena if the mappers want to include them in the map.

I'll dig around.

bumping up an old topic...

do we have any creative artists that can come up with symbols for the teams?

i tried to find good images of the threewave mod and their symbols but this was the best i could find: (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3547/3381621331_5440b97589.jpg?v=0)
the hammer and the lightning are clear symbols that are simple and look good. i think it would be great if we could come up with two symbols that are clear as images and by popular culture are antagonists. like cat vs dog, pirate vs ninja ;)

any ideas - or is it a bad idea?

I can do these on inkscape. Texture artists might make CTF specific textures with the new symbols when we've decided the par.
UT2004 also has a lot of team symbols, it will be very difficult to choose two which aren't seen on other games.

EDIT: What about 6 and 9? Ying-yang like, but separated, being Ying the red symbol and yang the blue symbol.

Bump. Any ideas for team symbols? I'd like to implement those in my CTF maps.

How about some simple geometric symbols, like one is a circle the other is a rectangle. Maybe that's too basic, but one can be curved and the other linear. Are we thinking about just 2 different CTF symbols now, or we need more for the TA teams?

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf

2 symbols for the CTF teams. Mainly in order to create dedicated CTF textures for each team, such as those the Threewave CTF maps have.
That's a start, but what about something a bit more complex? A grenade, boxing gloves, a landmine, a ghost, a zombie... I don't know.

I haven't heard of these before, but they sound ok. I assume at the least, they would be like silhouettes or basic images. Is that right?
Would it be possible to change/select them each time you play the map, or do they always stay the same?

A couple of quick ideas (which may or may not have been used in countless other games):
Something to represent each character in the game.
A penguin for Penguin. A ball of string for Neko. A trident for Merman. A spider or a web for Arachna. A witch hat for Sorceress. A gear for Skelebot. Perhaps the grenade for Beret. A guillotine or a skull or a sharp and sinister looking weapon for Assassin. etc...
 Powerful or predatory animals.
Tiger, eagle/hawk, shark, praying mantis, wolf, bear, octopus, snake, scorpion, etc.

a landmine, a ghost, a zombie

.......MHMMMMMMMM.

If OA's going to do this, it should be done efficiently like one grayscale PCX image per logo, which is additively blended with a rgbGen const for the appropriate color

Don't forget Q3TA introduced shader remapping for this very purpose.

Some examples found in the Threewave maps, as examples of what Pulchr wanted to say in the first post:

I've found this for one of the symbols. Still, we should think on another:

non-symbolic experiments attached. don't take too jocularly.

Rorschach (http://rorschach) you mean ? :D ehe, yes it's kinda abstract.
I got no good idea for symbols, it's hard to find when there is no universe defined.
Cats vs Dogs idea isn't bad, they could be fancy to draw, and they have IMO more charm than let's say a weapon drawing or a symbol. Maybe there is a contrast with some characters being more eastern than western, but there should be something more subtle to emphasize it.

My two cents ideas:

i like the bulldog. the tiger not so much.

imo it would be better if the other team symbol isn't a classic aggressive animal. how about a tortoise, rabbit, dove, alpaca, fish or koala? :)

A glimpse on OA Player's bestiary:

The Gerbil: (http://www.paws4pets.co.uk/userimages/gerbil.jpg)

The Hellopacajocketf: (http://www.kilblaanfarm.com/alpaca.jpg)

El Cacatoes de la vega: (http://www.linternaute.com/nature-animaux/animaux/diaporama/especes-menacees/image/9cacatoes.jpg)

More I forgot of course, but as you can see, they're not the most typical nor the most agressive ones. Wish these icons could be as imaginative.

Did some extra examples and also extra versions of those two icons of above. Attached.

BTW, I don't think completely non-aggressive animals can fit in the game.

Hmmm, maybe I can try my hand at a couple of logos. I'd go for some simpler geometric forms. What do you think about something like round vs. angular? One can be something like a yin-yang or something flowing or tribal, while the other is something a cogwheel, heptagram or some runic symbol.

Artistic idea on the side: Red/Blue is obviously pretty established, but we might also hint at some two-colour standard even with the logo: Red would go well with silver (emblems/heraldic things) while for blue gold might look better as support colour. So each base colour has some metal associated with it that might look nicer in future maps. Orange and blue go well together, after all. For red it's usually green (mouldy/wet stones?) or silver.

I'm still doodling around.

Here's a test for the background, a sort of stylised 'coat of arms'. The actual logos are supposed to go above those. My plan was to have one in silver and one in gold, but they could even serve as the actual red/blue logos. Okay, they're not that good.

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf
Post by: Neon_Knight on January 30, 2011, 04:04:27 pm
I'd go for combining your two ideas with something else.

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf

Testing an idea for blue ... maybe the background 'coat of arms' needs to go on an actual shield; an abstract one, not a medieval one, of course.

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf

The idea is to have a blue/yellow and red/green logos for both teams, so these can be used in maps and banners. And then, just the blue and red parts for the projections/decals.

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf
Post by: PigCell on February 02, 2011, 12:38:57 pm
Those are all just ideas of mine tossed around a bit in gimp. There are two colour themes that go well together that mappers can adjust or ignore all together if they like. That would be the blue-orange and red-green combo that looks pleasing to the eye.

For the logos I went with silver vs. gold (or iron vs. brass or whatever) as secondary colours. Having some metal trim colour associated with each CTF base might help mappers incorporate blue/red surfaces more easily and without looking like crap.

Logo only versions will of course be available, but for now I'm still wrestling with what those logos should actually look like. Same with the backgrounds. Any input (x looks like butt, y is okayish) might help. Or sketch something and scan it in. I'm still learning my way around gimp.

I agree with neon knight but, I think the blue/yellow one is not so agreable...
I recommend it more bright colors for the both ones.
I've got no critiques for the red one...

I would like to improve these logos a bit, but I don't really know how. So, in case I vanish of the face of the earth or someone wants to fiddle with it, I'll provide the gimp source images. They are layered, so you can edit the original outlines and also get both foreground and background symbols separated.

The .7z contains two gimp .xcf files, one for blue and one for red.

To give you an idea, here's how those would look in the form of decals. I have yet to do the flags. The map is this one (http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=4047.0).

(http://img534.imageshack.us/img534/5638/shot0002ds.th.jpg) (http://img534.imageshack.us/i/shot0002ds.jpg/) (http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/7850/shot0003z.th.jpg) (http://img836.imageshack.us/i/shot0003z.jpg/) (http://img248.imageshack.us/img248/7948/shot0004qbx.th.jpg) (http://img248.imageshack.us/i/shot0004qbx.jpg/) (http://img607.imageshack.us/img607/2898/shot0005n.th.jpg) (http://img607.imageshack.us/i/shot0005n.jpg/)

I'll attach a test pk3 when I can do the flag textures (if I can find those among the sources) and remaining logos.

Title: Re: red and blue team symbols in ctf
Post by: PigCell on February 05, 2011, 01:33:17 pm
Do tell if you have problems opening those. I might just make an archive with individual .tgas or something.

Ground decals that look like sprayed/painted on the pavement might actually be better as foreground logo only. If you write a shader with the individual layers as separate source textures, you might be able to give the background a metallic reflection effect, like it's supposed to be.

It might even make sense to have 'flat', i.e. unbevelled logos with all effects done inside OA via shaders. Might take some more fiddling, I'll try and write some shaders myself, too.

Post by: Neon_Knight on February 05, 2011, 01:44:28 pm
And this is how it looks with the flags. I have yet to search what files are the sources for those team flag banners in oasago2. I'm pretty sure that many other maps use that as well.

(http://img600.imageshack.us/img600/4786/shot0002os.th.jpg) (http://img600.imageshack.us/i/shot0002os.jpg/) (http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/2136/shot0003iu.th.jpg) (http://img543.imageshack.us/i/shot0003iu.jpg/) (http://img573.imageshack.us/img573/8337/shot0004ep.th.jpg) (http://img573.imageshack.us/i/shot0004ep.jpg/) (http://img25.imageshack.us/img25/7270/shot0005br.th.jpg) (http://img25.imageshack.us/i/shot0005br.jpg/)

Anyway, attached the test file. Rename it to pk3 and throw it in the baseoa folder.

What about using the OA symbol within the logo? Would be more obvious than using some different decal.

Team symbols exist to give each team something of an own "identity", like these have, for example, in the Threewave CTF maps. I don't think the OA logo alone would work.
