Title: OpenArena League
Post by: RailWolf on March 19, 2008, 04:20:55 PM
Greetings, I have been working on an OpenArena league for the community to enjoy.  The current set up is for a dueling (1v1) tournament named  OADL, and a  CTF tournament named OACTFL.  The site can be found at http://league.tastyspleen.net .  Click on the OADL or OACTFL link on the left and sign up :)

Our buddy EscapedTurkey has offered to run servers for the tournament which are located in Texas, USA.  I will be posting news on http://QuakeUnity.com about the upcoming event to help gain some outside interest for the games. I also have a dedicated shoutcaster (commentator) named Jehar who has been doing a great job with the Quake2 Leagues I've done. He will be doing coverage of the OA games and will have all the recording available for download.

The Duel League will run a series of 'round-robin's. What this is: I will set up multiple divisions to house all the players who sign up. The number of divisions will depend on how many players actually sign up. You will play each person in your division once and you will be awarded points for your wins. After each person has played everyone in each division, the top players from each divison will advance to the play-offs where the Winner and #2/#3 spot will be determined.

The Rules are being typed up, it will probably be a best 2 out of 3 for matches in the 'round-robin' phase, and 3 out of 5 for the play-offs.  Timelimit being either 10 or 15 minutes.  Maps are going to be picked through with the help of escapedturkey and his massive list of map choices ( =o ) which there will probably be around 5-10 maps to choose from to play your matches.  I will keep this thread updated with any information that becomes available regarding either of these leagues.

Happy Fragging,

RailWolf

CTF will be 0 capture limit and 20 timelimit.

Servers will be running NoGhost admin mod with Unlagged enabled, no changes to the baseOA gameplay. :)

I'll play too.. if time/date suits.

I/we will also set up a couple of servers in Europe to train/mess around in - Is there defined config etc?

Okay, I'm from Europe, and I never played any league and am rather new to Quake world, but I'm interested by the CTF part.
I subscribed and made a team.
I'd appreciate if people who ever met me on OA, and who may be interested in joining it, can contact me.
For those who are interested, please have an eye there : http://jolie.techa.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48
I know many players I enjoy to play with, and would be happy to see them around that event ;)

You're very welcome pulchr ;) You should come more often on brick :P
I just gave a try on a US server today (brutal CTF), it was quite playable (~100-110ms of ping)
I hope we'll have some oa_ctf4ish map :P

I'm sure RailWolf will chime on this one. I would imagine ideally, even if the servers will always be the same location, you may want to have a Euro and US team (and other dramatically different location based teams). That way European players will ping the same to the server and same with USA players -- preventing any major offset in pings.

Could even set rules such as -- Euro Team requirements -- must ping higher than such and such ## -- USA Team Requirements -- must ping lower than such and such ##.

Thoughts? :)

We need to know which maps you all like for the leagues.

For each server, enable downloads (/cl_allowdownload 1 or Setup -> Game Options -> Automatic Downloading On).

Then /callvote nextmap and check out the maps.

Please let us know which CTF and Duel (FFA) maps you prefer:

FFA Server: 72.5.249.2:27960

CTF Server: 72.5.249.3:27960

Here are the current map rotations on the test servers -- we just want to know maps you prefer for competition:

FFA Map Rotation (http://turkey.escapedturkey.net/openarena/baseoa/ffa-maprotation.txt)

CTF Map Rotation (http://turkey.escapedturkey.net/openarena/baseoa/ctf-maprotation.txt)

Thank you. :)

Yes, I have updated many of the rules for the leagues. Escapedturkey has sponsored a prize for the winners as well :)

Remember, once your form your team for CTF you need to click SignUp... same goes for the duel league.

About the euro teams, we can separate the divisions by country if needed, to preserve equal play based on ping.

"teamkills are on" in ctf ? does this mean friendly fire ? not very common on the ctf servers i played..

Yah, was wondering the same. There is a new poll (right hand side of page) on whether FF (friendly fire) should be on or off:

Thanks Big Blue, nice avatar, you're welcome ;)
(I'll update the post on my forum (http://jolie.techa.free.fr/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=48) with a few infos)

I also have questions about the league ...

- What about the date of the league ? (deadline when all players should have subscribed, eventually date of the first match)
- About the maps, I've already played the custom ones you added on ET's server, I haven't played much and in ideal conditions on them (not enough players), the ones I would play if it only depends on me would be : letgo_02, 13vast (or bubctf1, rather the same), bastir, oa_ctf4ish, kellblack, oasago2f2, TeamTemple_q3a. I see nothing really wrong with the other maps you have. I also liked moonstone but it's risky so it's better to avoid. I wasn't thinking we would play custom maps, as it is an "OA" league it makes less sense if it turns back to Q3. The other thing is also most guys playing OA do not know these maps, or may feel reluctant to use non GPL ressources ;). Chosen maps may also depend on the number of players, LetGo maps are quite small, brings us to next question ...
- For CTF, it will be 4 guys VS 4 guys playing, am I right ?
And a few stupid questions ...
- Can someone leave the game during one match and let someone else play instead ?
- I think there is no problem if the playing members of our team varies from a match to another... right ?

I've tried to play on ET's server, I had about 150ms of ping, I have to get used to it, the fact it's unlagged also confused me a bit.
Members of my team would be european or close of it, but I wasn't against having US guys. As it turns I think we'll stick to localized teams.

I think that's all ... :P

Title: Re: OpenArena League
Post by: escapedturkey on March 23, 2008, 12:14:39 AM
RailWolf will answer your other questions.

There are other OA CTF maps, we just don't have them in the CTF server map rotation because people preferred the ones we listed. However, if you have other suggestions, beyond what is in the current map rotation, we'd like to know.

I'm thinking we can have teams compete based on location. That way Europeans battle it out with other Europeans and USA vs. USA. This way, say, if everyone plays on a USA server, they will have a similar ping range as everyone else in the match. Thoughts? :)

Title: Re: OpenArena League
Post by: aantipop on March 23, 2008, 02:37:57 AM
some random thoughts about maps:

czest2ctf is a great map, but many people dont like it.
its important to have a good balance between space and ground maps.
i think its ok to mix gpl and non-gpl maps, since this is a "3rd party" league ?!

i want to suggest to have friendly fire OFF, it will ruin gameplay
dunno how this is in quake3, but im so sure its OFF

ET Duel (Auto DL ON) -- Duel (1 vs. 1) Server:

This is a good server for practicing Duel (1 vs. 1) with others.

http://dpmaster.deathmask.net/?game=openarena&server=72.5.249.4:27960

Please skip to step # 3 if you have already have OpenArena installed.

1. Download and extract OpenArena:

http://turkey.escapedturkey.net/games/openarena.zip

2. If you have Quake 3, please copy your autoexec.cfg from your Quake 3 baseq3 (or mod folder) into your openarena/baseoa folder.

3. Run the game.

4. In the game console (~) type:

/cl_allowdownload 1

Then type:

/connect 72.5.249.4

Server Information

You can also find our server via the in-game browser under "ET Duel (Auto DL ON)".

Be sure to enable downloading: Setup -> Game Options -> Automatic Downloading On.

We are running OpenArena with the NoGhost mod.

The server is running with delag (unlagged) mode on. You should have the same playable experience whether your ping to the server is 50 or 150.

"teamkills are on" in ctf ? does this mean friendly fire ? not very common on the ctf servers i played..

I had turned FF on because it is common for pro-league team matches to have it on. ... But like ET said, I have started a poll so that you the players can decide on this rule.

Title: Re: OpenArena League
Post by: RailWolf on March 23, 2008, 11:47:09 AM
I also have questions about the league ...

- What about the date of the league ? (deadline when all players should have subscribed, eventually date of the first match)

I am still tweaking up the rules which is almost complete. I will more than likely set a 1 month sign-up period. From my experiance with the Quake2 league going right now (NAiL) It took almost two months for all of the teams to get grouped and a set roster.. Sometimes it takes a few weeks or more for the word to pass around to everyone who might like to be involved.

Quote
- About the maps, I've already played the custom ones you added on ET's server, I haven't played much and in ideal conditions on them (not enough players), the ones I would play if it only depends on me would be : letgo_02, 13vast (or bubctf1, rather the same), bastir, oa_ctf4ish, kellblack, oasago2f2, TeamTemple_q3a. Chosen maps may also depend on the number of players, LetGo maps are quite small, brings us to next question ...

Thanx for the recommendations on maps. I've seen someone else mention bubctf1 as a good map, so that one will more than likely make it into the map choices. Maps are still in question, which is really the only major thing left to organize. Again, your suggestions are appreciated.

Quote
- For CTF, it will be 4 guys VS 4 guys playing, am I right ?

That is what I put into the rules. If there is enough committed people for this league, it will be 4v4. I've had to drop a league down to 3v3 before though, due to the lack of players..but hopefully as soon as everything gets completely worked out and everyone knows what is going on we will have plenty of people for 4v4.

Quote
And a few stupid questions ...
- Can someone leave the game during one match and let someone else play instead ?

The season will be arranged best of 3 maps. Once a team is ready and begins a map, the roster is locked for that map. If, for instance, someone lags out in the middle of a match, the match can be paused until that player returns. Player drop-outs in the middle of a match is another thing I have yet to correctly word for the rules but it will be there later this evening.

Quote
- I think there is no problem if the playing members of our team varies from a match to another... right ?

If you wish to switch players after a map, you can - as long as they are on your team roster on the league site.

imo you shouldn't have too many maps played in the tournament. unfamiliar maps doesn't make for good games. get a list of maximum 6 good maps - that are well known. or decide early on which maps to include so people have a chance to try them out.

Title: Re: OpenArena League
Post by: escapedturkey on March 23, 2008, 05:15:16 PM
I don't have a European location. I'm thinking we could just split the teams so at least the Europeans all ping to the US server on the same level vs. competing against US players who will have a much lower ping. The servers are running unlagged, so a lot of the ping issues are resolved, especially for hit-scan weapons.

New Poll added:

"Should we have European and USA divisions?"

Please vote -- right hand side under "Polls".

only oasago2f2!!!
lol

Maybe for map choices, do slob picks.

The first choice will be either:
a)random
b)a set map, like oasago2f2
c)ping disadvantage chooses
d)mutual agreement between the two teams/tourny host

then after that, the loser picks the next map, out of a filtered list.

As the Poll goes, seems you'll divide EU teams and US teams.
I didn't vote, maybe I didnt understood well, but the more teams I play against, the happier I am with it.
After a bit of testing, it's still quite uncomfortable to play with a ping around 150-180. If you want I can let you use a server located in France to host some games. Some other server admins with better servers in Europe may also offer you the same, but as it seems nobody offered yet ...

In that past I've found a good method of handling maps-to-be-played is: being a best 2/3 match.. each team gets to vote on a map they want to play. If a team wins the first two rounds there is not a third map played (each map is worth one point, so that team would automatically get 3 points)   If however the match goes 1-1 then a predetermined tie-breaker map would then be played

well, if one team is really opposed to oa_bases3, and one team is really opposed to oasago2f2, then they cant really come to an agreement. It can still be a 2/3, its just that the loser of the previous map would pick the next one. You cannot counterpick a map you have already won on.

for example:
team 1 has ping advantage, team 2 picks oasago2f2
first- team 2 wins, team 1 picks oa_ctf4ish
second - team 1 wins(because high ping doesnt play well on space maps), team 2 counterpicks hydro(because they won on oasago2f2 and cant counterpick that map)
third - team 2 wins

team 1 has ping advantage, team 2 picks oasago2f2
first - team 2 wins, team 1 picks oa_ctf4ish
second - team 2 wins reguardless, cause they are that good

and each best out of three set could be played as a best out of three for ping reasons. first set play on a map that team 1 has an advantage on, second play a map that team 2 has an advantage on, I dunno for third lol.

counterpick maps:
oasago2f2
hydronex
oa_bases3
oa_ctf4ish
oa_ctf2

there are two space maps, two strafe maps, and one noob map. It looks good to me. For finals which would be best out of 5, we may run out of maps pretty quick hehe, so then you can add some custom maps. Add them for variation as well :P Maybe add ctf_inyard and ctf_compromise!

Sign-ups will be cut off on April 26th. Around this time I'm going to contact everyone who has signed up to verify their participation, and proceed to making up the schedule. Matches should begin within a week of the sign-up end.  If for some reason either of the leagues run into the month of July, there will be one week break starting on July 28 for QuakeCon

The EscapedTurkey server and the new euro server will be used.
