ouch i'm burned out, will polish news later.

- New player model : Sorceress
- New map: oa_bases7
- New map: pul1ctf
- New map: schism
- q3dm6ish retextured by TRaK, and is back in the maps menu
- oa_bases3 recompiled with fast water (should perform 632% faster)
- Classic version of oa_bases3 snuck in :)
- oa_minia updated
- dm6ish updated (retextured, and bots aren't dumb at the door anymore)
- New plasma gun model and skin from enki
- New sound effects for shotgun, railgun, and weapon switching
- New CTF event sounds
- New Kyonshi voices, courtesy of aeri_s
- Ayumi optimized, at the cost of the Jenna skin :(
- Beret greatly improved, in skin and animation and taunt sound
- Some simple stress and flyby demo files (intended for timedemo)
- All TGAs that had broken headers are now corrected
- Other stuff like random asset polish

Just to mention the md5sum in the main page seems incorrect.

Would be :

61aaba81973900d5116a6842079c9c49  oa080.zip # md5sum
d5115b064a1322b34051e9c133ce0c6421f73123  oa080.zip # sha1sum

Hope it's allright.

Umm...where's the version for Mac OS?

The person that normally builds it is away, so there is not a Mac OS version yet.

Call to Action

Help spread the word!  The pickup on the last couple of releases has been slow, and a bigger user base means better multiplayer.  Do what you can to spread the word of this release to current and potential players.

If you have a website, or social networking page, use it.  Some artwork is already available, and you should feel free to contribute more:

I do have nearly 1,500 members I could easily mass-mail here.... but i'll wait until proper releases for mac, win installer, and deb pkg first for the sake of ease... maybe 0.8.1 releases at that
Just to mention the md5sum in the main page seems incorrect.

Hope it's allright.

Does stuff like:
Quote
LD build/release-linux-x86_64/oa_ded.x86_64
build/release-linux-x86_64/ded/sv_bot.o: In function `BotImport_Print':
sv_bot.c:(.text+0xeb6): undefined reference to `__stack_chk_guard'
sv_bot.c:(.text+0xf1f): undefined reference to `__stack_chk_guard'
sv_bot.c:(.text+0xf8a): undefined reference to `__stack_chk_fail'
mean that I realy realy need libc6 >= 2.4 to compile the sourcecode ?

Ps looks like ioquake3.x86_64 from 077 also works with 080 :-)

Pps Debian Etch will upgrade libc6 from version 2.3 to 2.7 in september so dont worry to much about it ;-)

For people running a server and having the "Awaiting Gamestate" issue, Sago007 solved the problem, working 0.8.0 binaries are available here : http://download.tuxfamily.org/openarena/rel/080/oa080-serverfix.zip

Are also included in subdirectory "old_glibc" binaries to make OA 0.8.0 working with Debian Stable.

For builders/packagers, I have generated "ioquake3-serverfix.patch" that applies Sago007's fix to the ioquake3svn1438 source.  I have also provided a spec file for RPM packagers (Fedora):

I was wondering if there is a way to increase or decrease the sensitivity of the mouse incrementally or to increase or decrease the zoomfov incrementally instead of having to manually specify a value. That way, I can have the scroll mouse incrementally increase or decrease the sensitivity as I want and I have have a button on the keyboard manually increase the zoomfov incrementally as I want (by binding the incremental increase or decrease to the correct keys).

Also, I was wondering how to make a person you frag disappear instantly because it's kinda a distraction for him to be on the screen for a while after he is fragged (especially if you're shooting from a high location).

Thanks.

Nope! Kinda hard to make a patch installer when it's just a zip full of all the big zips. Not much of a patch.

Title: Re: 0.8.0 released!
Post by: kilgore on August 12, 2008, 11:36:37 AM
Well I can't download it yet since I'm a mac user... but I'll ask anyway... Is 8.0 compatible with the last version?  Meaning can 8.0 *only* play on 8.0 servers?  Thats something that is (still) a bit frustrating.. the community is dispersed over 4 versions or so...none able to play with the others.  aren't people still playing on 7.1??  and 7.6 and 7.7??

Title: Re: 0.8.0 released!
Post by: sago007 on August 12, 2008, 12:27:43 PM
@kilgore:
Version incompatibility has been the norm until now.

From 0.8.0 it stops until 0.9.0 meaning 0.8.0, 0.8.1, 0.8.2 etc. can play together.

It will be broken again in 0.9.0 to cut back on filesize but 0.9.0 is not scheduled until 2009-09-09

Great news ^^
I cant wait to play it. I wish we were all in the same release coz sometimes the servers are a lil bit empty ;)

Id be great some way to distinguish players with 0 ping in the choosing server screen... So u can tell if there is only bots in the server... u.u

Anyway this has been always a problem with q3... you can work around it easily with some webs (http://dpmaster.deathmask.net/?game=openarena&sort=ip&showplayers=yes&hide=both&hideheader=1&hideplayers=1) or adjusting some program... but it'd be nice to see some tips in the screen so you can tell, coz ive been having problems minimizing the oa screen to copy the ip... the only way i have is using alt+enter and typing the ip that i previously prepared in some corner of the screen coz alt + tab (nor copy&paste) work for me

anyway... and again... GREAT NEWS!! I CANT WAIT TO SEE THE NEW ADDS

0.8.0 released. The mouse doesn't suck. Please upgrade to this exciting new version :)
The mouse was just fine to begin with, but at very least it doesn't feel any worse (keep up the good work :D).

But to the point: how can I copy the old weapons switching/pickup sounds (i.e. from 0.7.6 (I have that one))? These sound like a metal lighter. Also, if possible I'd like to use the old announcer.

Or do I just play the old version?

Other than that the new version is just fine and I almost like it so far.

It'll take some getting used to, you'll love the sounds eventually.

seriously, something has to be done about the railgun and or hitsound. i can't hear anymore if i hit with that weapon. i have a hard time seeing how that's an improvement.

Title: Re: 0.8.0 released!
Post by: Cacatoes on August 13, 2008, 07:21:02 AM
In worse case, we'll make servers getting unpure, and allow use of some custom .pk3.
I agree with pulchr & others, would be nice to change some of them again, hope it will be in a new patch.

There could also be some new sounds produced instead of using old ones.
One of the problem was there was so few contributions that choice for new sounds was limited.

- New announcer voices from Fuzztooth
- New plasma gun model and skin from enki
- New sound effects for shotgun, railgun, and weapon switching
- New CTF event sounds
Thease are awesome! I tried the game today.
Changes in the "Create menu" are cool also. And I think the menus seem a little cleaner (may be just my imagination).

Now I'm just waiting for servers to update so I could play my favorite oasago2 with players with 0.8.0.

i can't hear anymore if i hit with that weapon.
that's because it's trying to play files that don't exist since the last vm change, i didn't have time to rectify this (hithi.wav, hitlo.wav)

Ive playing new version :) I noticed it... that was great improvement!! pity theres only like 5 servers online :(

Sound is not working in oa for me most of the times (sometimes work sometimes, dont.. i think is an issue with my card) so i cannot tell about the sound issues that others are telling, but I think that theres only one thing missing....

Other stuff (like skins, sounds, little issues, minor changes) will be better in future versions, but I  think its really great to play already. The only things I miss are better maps in pure servers...

The maps are... plain awful... q1 maps conversions are not intended for mp even tho can be played... plain awful...
the 4 maps added in 0.7.7 was kinda ok.... compared with the rest of the maps....
another example... the q3dm6ish is great (I even like more V1 textures than v2) but why not use dm6 and its other multiples versions? dm6++ etc.... Im sorry I have no idea about licenses... maybe just talkin nonsense

To say that osago castle's 2 is the best map in CTF is not telling much of them... really :)

Yes, I compiled it on 10.4.11 with my installed Xcode 2.5 as Intel only version. Besides OA you will need to download and install: libogg, libvorbis and libsdl. Well, it's not a double-clickable application for now, but I have to start it in the terminal. Besides this it's working fine.

I thought the same as I stumbled across OA the first time (which was 0.71)
There were 7 new maps in 0.76 but they get not played, server admins don't put them in rotation. This and the lack of feedback for improvement keeps me from spending much time on mapping for OA.

Thank u for this exciting new version.
I've played oa ever since 0.6.0 version and up untill 0.8 it has been a great game. I have even recomended it to some of my friends, but...
0.8 is the worst version of all. Why? Loads of stuff, starting with the sounds which remind me of ol' 60's porn movie, through mines - now thats a weapon immitation, ending with mouse control. I thought that a new version would bring imrovements not deterioration. One thing i'd appreciate is keeping the vertex option, apart from that it's poor. Very poor. New maps? hmm no comments on that.

Anyways all the best with development, but there is one player less in openarena.

Hey, the new version is great. The only problem I have is that I can't seem to find certain weapons. Is the BFG in the maps that come with the game? Or am I just not playing the right levels?

Also, the first post said that the mission pack weapons were added to the regular game, and they do seem to load into the levels, but are they actually in the old levels? I found a nailgun, but I think that was in the new level.

Title: Re: 0.8.0 released!
Post by: pulchr on August 26, 2008, 08:55:06 AM
the new weapons are not in the maps unless the mapper has put them there. or you are playing a game mode that gives you all weapons instantly.

the bfg is rarely put in maps since it's so ridiculously overpowered.

i think there's a bfg at the top of the "king of the hill"-map and also high up in the middle of ctf4ish

Your issue seems more like lag related than something else.
Play on LAN and see if there is a delay between click and effective shoot :P
Play on unlagged servers and complain when you fall back to 0.7.1 type servers ...

Have you tried playing offline (with bots). I see no lag. I also see no lag during LAN play (4 players over 108Mbit/s thoughput router). Rail (and some other weapons like rocketluncher) does take some time to recharge but that's normal. I can do all the rocket jumping tricks normally. Maybe you have a keyboard issue? I can play normally either using my laptop's integrated keyboard (which sucks for driving though because I can't hold left, forward and space at the same time) or an external USB keyboard.

Also, which linux (game engine works like a charm on linux for me)? Maybe you misconfigured something?

Title: Re: 0.8.0 released!
Post by: zuma on August 29, 2008, 04:40:12 PM
its not ping issue. its linux issue. being so i find 7.7 better.
i had this on archlinux with 7.7- keys got stuck, and after respawning i shot the unusual amount of mg bullets like i do now on 0.8. but 0.8 dont have keys stuck. maybe the version of kernel and xorg influences it. with stock xorg config my sens was all over the place, i reconfigured and it was better, but not like on my previous distro. now i use slackware 12.1.

You're right, I tried Linux version not long ago and had a strange feeling when shooting rockets in single player mode. Usually I'm surprised how they're quickly launched out, I'm not much into tricks so I didn't see much difference when doing rocket-jumps & such. So much little things affect (or not) gameplay ...

On of the bases ctf maps- where flag is high above and there is shaft and grenade laucnher, bottom is 2 plasmas and rocket. Trick is to make strafe from flag room, land on ground and shoot rocket beneath you- this will result in you flying over water to home base. You can't do it in 0.8. At least i could't.
Edit: tried to make it but did not really flew all across the water, the vertical bounce in 0.8 is too weird.

I still need to check if the physics have changed like some say or not, otherwise I think it's a very good release. Thanks for the filter of bots players, that was much needed and asked on the board. The graphics seem much improved, the sounds are cool and so are the new weapons like the mines and the game modes that make OA even more interesting.

Here is a link to a zip containing Linux / Mac / Windows 0.8.0 versions :

http://download.tuxfamily.org/openarena/rel/080/oa080-LinMacWin.zip

This pack already contains the server fix for each platform (sago's linux and windows builds, jackoverfull's builds for mac, and still old_glibc i386 files)

Does it contain any other difference than server fix compared to oa080.zip from http://openarena.ws/files.html (the initial 080 release))?

Nope, it's still OA 0.8.0.
So you don't need it if you already got oa080.zip and added the fix yourself.
