Title: Ubuntu installation tutorial for website
Post by: brettalton on August 14, 2008, 04:26:17 PM
Hi, I know this area is for graphics, not specifically for the website, so I hope this post is okay.

I'm attaching some images for a tutorial on how to install under Ubuntu. Unfortunately there are 7 images and I'm only allowed 4 attachments, so I am uploading the images in a .zip file (485.8 kB).

Since Ubuntu 8.04 only included OpenArena 0.7.1 unless backports are enabled - which brings the game up to 0.7.7 - I'm also included images for enabling ubuntu-backports.

Lastly, I am hoping to include in the "Files" or download page, instructions for installing the games under other Linux systems through their package manager, or, at the very least, what version each system is currently at.

I'm a web developer and would like to help part time - anything to help this great game! Keep it up!

Lists for checking OpenArena version

Ubuntu: http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?suite=default&section=all&arch=any&searchon=names&keywords=openarena (0.7.7)
Debian (sid): http://packages.debian.org/unstable/games/openarena (0.7.7)
Arch Linux: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=7748 (0.8.0)
--- not sure if these are reliable (below) ---
Fedora: http://fr.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=openarena (0.7.7)
OpenSUSE: http://rpm.pbone.net/index.php3/stat/3/srodzaj/1/search/openarena-data (0.7.7)

Enabling ubuntu-backports in Ubuntu 8.04 to allow OpenArena 0.7.7

The version in ubuntu's repo is old, really you need to download from OA's site to get the new one

It should be posted in the wiki! With mentioning at the beginning that before doing the tutorial, they should check it's the latest version.
What do we have to do to have the latest version of OpenArena available from Ubuntu?
