before 0.7.7 it was possible to join a quake 3 server if it was unpure, had punkpuster disabled, auth disabled and did not use any of the official quake 3 maps (and 0.7.6 also required that it was running a mod). It was also possible for Quake 3 players to join Open Arena servers and here the auth disabled was automatically fulfilled. From 0.7.7 OA started to use a different protocol number between incompatible versions. This has annoyed many defrag players as defrag was one of the few mods that fulfilled all the above requirements.
