Title: OA 0.8.1 plan
Post by: fromhell on October 03, 2008, 04:01:37 PM
- engine binaries will remain in the same protocol as 0.8.0
- there will be 'legacy' engine binaries based from the 0.7.1 source code, and using old protocol 68. There will be a very big disclaimer about the use of these binaries being NOT SUPPORTED by the OA team. Maybe this will be a seperate release?
- Hit sounds will be redone
- Sorceress will get a default skin
- Any extra stuff in the SVN commits thread will be present.

Deadline unknown.

I guess you'll be using sago's fixed binaries, right?

I will see if I can finish some of my maps (I think lavaarena can be ready for this release, but can't say the same about gaelevish -FPS droppage at some point- and mckinleyish, specially with the last one) in order to be commited before 0.8.1.

I know that was the plan but if one of the pk3 files change (because something is removed) that could cause a lot of trouble.

I suppose we could bump a protocol number up then.

Please release something ASAP, even if it will be "0.8.0a" with just the unlicensed stuff removed and no other changes.
It's been more than two weeks already, without a downloadable "Current Release".
This is very bad for the growth of project's popularity. Think about it - zero new players for two weeks (and counting).

Beginners somehow manage to find there way to q3 1.16 everyday which kinda suprises me since it's not easy to find. I guess it's word of mouth why people choose that release.

Version 080 is still available from many sources. If the texture stuff is an issue here then they aren't exactly going to openly suggest going elsewhere to download. It doesn't mean other people are restricted and have to depend on the official site to be the ones to help promote the game, whatever the release. Alot of development stuff goes on here but if the game is appealling and easy enough to set up and play then there would be no stopping them. I do not know if it's acceptable to include a fix for any issues and host it themself in a different file for download but it wouldnt take much effort and the dev team here can get on with what they are doing. People who come here are probably put off with all the posts that make it look like the version is completely dead n buried rather than the statement of why the release was pulled. I wouldn't expect the dev team to completely shoulder the popularity and responsibility to get the servers filled.

But should it be? Has anyone contacted those sources to request that they stop distributing the offending material? That would for example include distributions like Ubuntu, and third-party repositories like getdeb.net, etc etc - I still see those packages around, when they clearly shouldn't be there anymore... right?

In fact, while we are at it, couldn't you also shutdown the master server to dissuade people from using the game (at least on-line) since that would mean that they are holding onto a offending version? I mean, there are no versions indicated to be OK for download at the official site, so presumably all versions may contain non-free content, that is, content which they are not allowed to have. If it is not OK to provide those versions, why should it be OK to facilitate their use?

That is not the issue. I haven't read much about the problem but it seems that the decision has been made to stop distributing the release. To be honest, I think the texture issue is only one small part of the reason and it has always been accepted in the past that there won't be any generic media pak to make a fix a simple small download. Now people need to download the entire game each time.

When fromhell makes a decision, it usually stands. It's probably better than reversing decisions and confusing everyone completely. Stopping the master server is one of the most craziest things I've heard. Suppose there was many people on that release (numbers arent important) but you would be public enemy number one if you were to pull the plug :D That is only a mechanism for connection. I could start my own master within minutes of it going down, now how scary would that be hehe.

They have stopped distributing the release, it's no big deal. Go get people playing 0.7.1. There is no official reference stating that the game is dead, only reading some of the responses would lead me to believe that. I've heard that people can upload Windows XP and Vista can be easily downloaded and installed by visiting sites by one or two clicks. I don't think even Bill Gates could help out here with these proposals. I think the dev team have more important things to concentrate on. I don't speak on behalf of anyone, I'm try stating my own opinions the way I see things and can't say I'm that suprised or take it too seriouslly. It only temporarily puts the release in limbo, and only from the official source.

Please keep the thong in the skin!!! ;)

I come from 1.16 community ;)

Ive got to say that the reason for new ppl coming to 1.16 is that 1.16 is the version of the q3 demo... witch is still downloadable from the id webpage... plus the great community, of course ;)

The popular noghost mod come from that community (Maveric is the guy called) ;)

Mmmm this recall so many good memories.... :)~~~~

Mmm... I think gshadow was just ironic about the fact that the problem seems so serious, but he wonder why is not serious enough to make another crazy things...
PD: I did read the thread about the problem, and it seems to me that it was only a misunderstanding, and you only can see it as a problem if you are very strict and straight with how are the things suppose to be done. Even if nobody else give a damn and nobody complained yet about the copyright...

But its only a guess about what gshadow meant, of course ;)

If the master for OpenArena were to shut off, it'll shut off Nexuiz and Warsow too
