I still think black names are cheating and shouldn't be allowed

it's been disabled in quake live for a reason...

how is black names cheating? it doesn't make the player less vulnerable a bit. maybe the name itself is harder to see, but so what.

play any space map with a dark starry sky. aim at a player far away. look at the name that appears. is it black? can you see it the name of the player? no. i guess that's the reason.

i'm not sure if this forum thread (http://www.quakelive.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14599) can be read if you don't have a quake live account so i'll quote two posters here:

Quote
because idiots cant be trusted to use it sparingly. you get people colouring their entire name in black, which is impossible to read at all.

Quote
you always gets some jackass wearing black/black., with a black name, which you can't read, ever, spamming grenades and camping and otherwise being a pain in the backside and spamming the console with garbage.

ID made a good call on blocking black names and skin options. Always been that way, always should be, IMO.

the way i remembered if from rtcw you could have black nicknames by duplicating the circumflex (^) and if i remember correctly 8 (or 0) was the black colour.

i tried by tyoing "^^8player" but it output a white ^before the black "player". there are players out there using black - someone must know :)

I haven't seen a completely black name.
The player you saw probably made the carat blue: ^4^^0CHEATER

i guess ioquake made a good hack then, because setting color black requires ^^0 or ^^8 which leaves the first character colored white. couldn't quake live come up with something of that sort :D

Perhaps we should ban black names in the next release of OA? It does give an unfair advantage,
I do know how to get black names but refuse to use it or tell you how to use it.

note to everyone that i don't care that much about the coloured nicknames - i just tried to express why some people object to the black colour...

anyway... what i find interesting in this thread is that killie has a third favourite colour. i've never before, in my entire life, heard anyone ranking colours like that. my immediate question to killie is: what are your first and second best? fourth? :D

I think I know why gamers hate black :D:

On a technicality, Black cannot be considered a colour, as no light in the visible spectrum is reflected from a "Black" surface. It is basically the absence of all colour. This means black names are invisible and can only be perceived by considering the background behind the letters. This perception requires too much brain power which can be better spent on aiming. When a player with a black name joins a server, everyone's performance drops significantly.

Grrr! Abolish black!!!!

is this true or u just made this up, when look at a black name, i end being able correct my aim a bit faster, temporaly and your theory is like saying That in a race, when a black car comes in, other cars engines develop less power.   IT'S STUPID!!!

This is true in a way. The letters have to be very black for no visible light to be reflected and to be completely undetectable by the eye.

This perception requires too much brain power which can be better spent on aiming.
This is untrue.

When a player with a black name joins a server, everyone's performance drops significantly.
This is completely false.

I have no idea of whether or not this question has been answered or not, but here is how coloring names works

As I am sure you know, you need the carrot ^, followed by a number, followed by the desired colored text.

Black works a little differently. You need two ^'s followed by an 8.
eg:
/name ^^8Player

Will make your name:
^Player

eg:
/name ^1^^8Player

will make your name:
^Player

^1 is for red
^2 is for green
^3 is for yellow
^4 is for blue
^5 is for cyan
^6 is for purple
^7 is for white
^^8 is for black

In the xbattle mod, then everything is the same except
^8 is for orange
^0 is for black

And about your debate on wether having the name black is unfair, you need to have a ^ colored something other than black in order to have a black name. A portion of the name will always still be visible. If you make your name black in order to make yourself harder to see, you might as well make your name . or ' because those marks are smaller than the ^

^1 is for red
^4 is for blue
from far i will rail,
from near, melee you :)

:D (applause)

The reason you need double ^^ for black is because the code which detects and removes the black color sequence (^0 ^8 or whatever) is buggy.  If that code worked properly, black would never be possible.

BAN BLACK
You can ask for a feature in the next version: maybe a new cvar to "remove colors from players' names", or "make players' names readable"..

Indeed, I like this idea better ;)

I think most people aren't that much annoyed by black letters, IIRC there's an option to turn off the display of name players.
Even if it's better to be able to distinguish players (so that you aim the one who has the most skill :D), that may not be the best strategy ... "/cg_forcemodel 1" players should agree.

There is an option in the menu: Identify target, if turned off, the names won't show anymore. Also, in the COmpromise map (the dusty-desert one, by Cosmo), I never see the names of ppl I aim at :/.

An option to "clean up" the names would be nice, but I suppose it would end up in writing exactly te name, e.g. you would see ^5foo^^8bar instead of white foo^bar (the way you want it)

I understand how using all black characters on a name could be used as an advantage/cheating and making ppl pissed off and upset. But I love black and would love to be able to use it on my nickname along with other colors, without getting the extra ^.
I propose (or agree with) the following solutions:

1. If OA detects that you are trying to use a name with all black characters it will force your name to white, or random joyful colors.
2. Add a cvar to force all black characters to white for ppl that simply hate black characters entirely.
3. Options 1 and 2 combined to make everyone happy :).
4. Black characters with a white border (I would prefer the previous ones but this would be  much better than the extra ^ )
5. Give us at least a dark grey? (again, any of the above solutions would be much much much better, but this is still better than the extra ^  :(  )

Hoping this gets considered :).
