I think manual controls would be a bit much and probably wouldn't render well in game (Though the idea of a fish sitting in a chair holding a joystick is amusing).  It might be better to just wire the fish's head into the base of the legs, if you use the idea.

cool. it could be done in a matrix "plug in the back of the head" style. there could even be a slight pink tinge to the water in the tank to mimic the tanks from the film.  :-)

It'd be better if you went for a standard water look, possibly bluish tinted. The pink look would blend too well with the fish if we're going for pinkfish too.I do like the idea of the matrixplug, simplifies animation if its one giant cable rather than a bunch of little wires, though I'm not sure if you could slow down the actual fish/wire movement while walking/getting hit/ect to reflect the fact it's actually in water, and thus would move differently.

I wrote about that character concept on the wiki, how nice that someone found it useful. The sketch looks great

About the wires in the fish, I'm not sure if that would look that good, although maybe I'm wrong. Anyway, I guess the fish itself would be the head of the model, so it maybe wont allow animations other than moving when you look around. We could say that the fish has some psychic abilities to control the mechanical armor ^^U ..or that it has a chip within his head that sends electromagnetic pulses through the water.

You could animate the fish via the use of shaders, I would assume the bowl would be somewhat transparent.

This fish idea is awesome. 

I don't think there need to be any wires connecting the fish to the robot.  All you need is story.

You could call the fish something like psycod and provide some lore that basically states that psycod was genetically manipulated to control things with his mind.  So the fish could be controlling the robot with its mind.

Then someone could build a model of a professor with a large head that built it.

Just to clarify, I am not against weirdness in characters (reading the current chat conversations in game should be more than enough proof of that and they are probably going to get a bit more weird as I am re-writing both Grism's and Gargoyle's chat scripts to make them less generic and less repetitive).

I just have no clue as to what kind of personality Psycod the Magnificant:  Slayer of the 19 Cats of Doom should have... any ideas?

Hmmmm, how bout intellegent and somewhat soft spoken.  So a bot message may be something like:

"Blub, blug, gargle."

A really pissed fish would say something like:

"Garble, garble, blug, glorb, bubble."

Hope that helps.

And if people need some voice audio files to fill in for when he kills, takes a hit or dies let me know.  I have been running some ideas in my head about recording some shit underwater in my bathtub.  Like laughing, screaming, etc.  Not sure if it would be cool but I could mix it up with some synth shit maybe to make it sound extra ESP fish like.

Looks awesome...though the fish reminds me of that old rainbow fish thing that I always read (and despised) in kindergarten XD. I'll have fun using this model in OA.

It kind of reminds me of one of the ginormic, huge-antic models in Code Red: Alien Arena. I think it was the War model...

Looks good!  Maybe we could make a yellow and green fish for different skins of the fish like we have differing colors of other models.

Also, it would be pretty badass to have a small shark in the bowl too.  Just some ideas if you have some time.

agreed. i do a lot of massage and i've noticed a definite correlation between chest size and back pain.

Misfit model 3D (http://www.misfitcode.com/misfitmodel3d/) is free and multiplatform, but he is not friendly to animate…
When it has the animation finished in Fragmotion (single cost 20$), already import in MM3D 1.3.1. ;)

Thing is this was created for a game concept I've had for close to a year now and have only, through linux gaming tome, just now found a place(here) that has most of what I need already.

Now if only I could get a few of the true combat type mods to gpl their source code. Afterwards has most of what i need, but its incompatible with OA's licensing. However that is neither here nor there I suppose and would be better under a mod thread/subforum.

The thing is, we're in reverse - q3a shipped with a Yuriko skin for slash that had a uniform. It wasn't the default appearance though

This is exactly what I think OpenArena needs.  A 'Visor'-type character!  I can help with the voices, if you want (provided I get to test them, I know how to use FL Studio to edit voice clips)

Go for it!

I've got a more human voice in mind(as this is more futuristic SWAT/special forces than cyborg) but a computerish/artificial feeling voice would also work wonders so long as its not monotone or cylon(heavy synth with hard sylybles...makes it sound like somebody's using a kid's toy to do voice output).

How about something along the lines of the depictions of the Egyptian deities?  Something like Anubis (Jackal headed human) or Ra (Hawk/eagle headed human)?

Depends on if you want the more hybrid human/animal look the actual egyptians had, or the mroe technoish type armor the jaffa had on stargate. Either would look cool really, but clerification would be nice.

Either or both would work well as its wierd, its got a human anatomy, and depending on the texture and how its lit...it can be quite frightening.

Edit:
would be nice if we finally saw a body for the announcer guy. Just hope eventually somebody makes that one happen as I'd love to see mr announcer kicking people about. Not sure what sort of model he/it would have, but since you're going to have someone donating voices for announcements anyhow, why not add a few lines in while they're recording and slide 'em on a model(would be even funnier if the announcer turned out to be Fish.

I thought about that, and it'd be fine if it was just a bald Indian guy with glasses and white robes.  Gandhi didn't smoke cigars, so it couldn't be him.
Then again, if they can copy the Doom guy, why not?  Does someone own Gandhi's likeness?

I do go to an art college, for one more semester.  Maybe one of the animators would give it a shot.

Eh, I decided to make character concepts for a character that I might want to be modeled in 3D, figured a good place to post it would be here. It's a little incomplete, though, since I drew both the front and back with the legs not shown at the bottom.

Anyhow, here they are:

The concept might be a bit hard to model though, depending on how people interpret the confusing parts of the drawing(er, drawings). I still need to finish the legs and perhaps a few head angles, but might as well post what I have.

Keet, if you want that to be modeled, I highly recommend making some sketches of that character in the Da Vinci pose, perhaps with a more realistically proportioned head. Be very careful about perspectives and proportions when doing concept art. It's extremely helpful.

ALSO: I notice a lot of people seem to be contributing various FPS archetypes to this game. Most obviously, there has been Grism and the Gargoyle, but now we have plans for things like the Egyptian gods. I personally like this disregard for originality and have a few more ideas (and drawings which I may or may not post later) for other archetypes to represent:
  • Security Guard (Would probably come in a variety of skins, representing different security companies.)
  • Dystopian Police
  • Zombie
  • Quadruped alien/monster
  • Working class macho guy (Serious Sam or Duke Nukem type guy)
  • Modern soldier (There are a lot of ways you can go with this one. It could branch into multiple models.)
  • WWII-styled soldier
  • Semi-skeletal biped with mechanical elements and who is on fire.
  • Teenage cyberpunk

I apologize for the double post but I did some concept art which I intend to model eventually. It's for a sort of guerrilla soldier type. A lot of it is based off of the soldiers in Goldeneye for the N64. There are also some elements of UN soldiers in there too. I'd like to hear some criticism before I attempt to model it though.

Yes, just have the can be the lower.md3 and the hands be upper.md3. No head (just a flat tiny plane stuck inside the can with an alpha to 'identify' the player in scoreboards)
