Title: Hiding the Scoreboard
Post by: Peter Silie on April 22, 2009, 01:32:17 PM
Greetings Developers,

maybe i have a nice idea for upgrading oa.

starting position:
ctf (and other derivates) are teamplayed gametypes. most players on public servers ignore this fact and just play for their own score. this results in a lack of midfield defense and other important things.

solution:
what about the idea to hide the scoreboard for this modes?
It could be realized through a serverside setting, so the administrator can choose, if the scoreboard will be displayed at the client or not. the players could concentrate on their teamplay and do the right things for the team.

i know, that this setting is silly for dm and cw, but on publics it could help a lot to improve the whole games experience for ctf and others.

other suggestions are welcome.

THX

Peter Silie

this happens in all team games...including class based games where scoring is determined by how well you fulfill your function and whether or not it helps the team win/lose...

games such as....
TF2, RTCW, RTCW:ET, ETQW, Q3F, etc, etc, etc,

These games people perfer to play with friendlyfire on, unlike plain old Q3/Q3TA/OA...so it's even more disastrous in these games...

Hiding scoreboard won't do anything...

I was also wishing that kind of feature, to make a "no competition mod".
But the idea was the same, make people run less after frag counts, less honor in being the first.
Maybe only count flags brought by each one ?

You mean...like only score flag captures?

Yes, or score nothing :D

Defrag stunts (I don't talk about timed captures) are a good example, players can only focus on their skill, and not on ways to get a high score.
But I'm not sure that would be a way to discourage lame behaviours.

I fear that countig caps will change players focus to offense and nobody will do def :(

Maybe something like this:

1 point for a frag (as usual)
5 points for fragging the flag carrier
10 points for picking up enemy's flag
20 points for returning your flag
40 points for capturing enemy's flag (returning it to yours)

1 point for a frag (as usual)
5 points for fragging the flag carrier
10 points for picking up enemy's flag
20 points for returning your flag
40 points for capturing enemy's flag (returning it to yours)
Currently baseoa follows the baseq3 rules (added together):
1 point for a frag (as usual)
2 points for fragging the flag carrier
0 points for picking up enemy's flag
1 point for returning your flag
5 points for capturing enemy's flag (returning it to yours)
1 point for assist and defense (sometimes 2 points if you help your flagcarrier)

In missionpack this is increased:
1 point for a frag (as usual)
20 points for fragging the flag carrier
10 points for picking up enemy's flag
10 point for returning your flag
100 points for capturing enemy's flag (returning it to yours)
25 points to all team members for captures
2/5/10 point for assist and defense

2/5/10 point for assist and defense

if i calculate as a defender, i get more than 30 poimts per frag??!?!
1 point for the frag
+20 for fragging enemies flag carrier (be cool and wait until he gets your flag)
+10 returning my flag (be faster than your teammates)
+2/5/10 for defense

Defenders play this way to get many points and be well placed at the scoreboard.
This is very bad!

Trust me: do not change the scoring system, make a var to hide the scoreboard and gameplay will change 2 real gameplay - if admin wants it.

Why did you prepare to hide the scoreboard.

Is this (imho) great idea lost or will there be a var in the future release?
Our whole clan supports this idea and i think many other players will do also.
Just a var for the admin to toggle scoreboard on the clients on or off...
