Title: GPL Question: Use existing models for statues inside maps ok?
Post by: jukeboxhero on May 30, 2009, 05:38:24 AM
Hello everyone,

Can I used the existing models (eg Gargoyle, Sarge, Major, etc) to create statues inside the maps? How will GPL 'requirements' be satisfied? I guess in the License file for the map that I create I will have to give credit for the models.

Is this how it can be done?

BTW, can I even do this or do I need to create the model from scratch?

I have added a screenshot from OA_KOTH1 that depicts a statue (of Liz?). I want to do the same with other models.

As long as you give credit to your source, it shouldn't be a problem to make statues of the models.

The statue of Liz is actually just another Liz model (sort of like the player model, but bigger and with a different skin).

I think kit89 made that Liz statue. He might be able to tell you how he did it.

If I can remember, Cosmo asked me if I would modify Liz for a statue.

The statue uses the Liz sources found in the SVN. With a few modification. The Liz model was to high poly to use in a Level, so I used Blenders Poly Reducer to make it more respectable.

It's fairly simple to do. I used a static md3 exporter to do it. Which takes the data of the vertices from the current frame.

However this can also be done using an Exporter that supports Animations too. You'll need to create a new Action DataBlock, so you don't have to contend with the characters Animations. Once you moved the Characters bones into the right position. Select all the Bones you've moved(A), and then press (I) >> LocRot. Make sure your adding the Key to frame One.

Once done export!

If your export script requires you to set a Start & End Frame. Have them as 1,1, respectably.
