Also missing are:
sound/player/penguin/gasp
sound/player/skelebot/taunt

And these ones exist, but are named differently than what OA is looking for.
sound/player/penguin/pain25_1  (exists, but as pain25)
sound/player/penguin/pain50_1  (exists, but as pain50)
sound/player/penguin/pain75_1  (exists, but as pain75)
sound/player/penguin/pain100_1  (exists, but as pain100)
sound/player/penguin/fall1  (exists, but as fall)

Bump.

I'll see if I can do something about the sounds and create some of my own.
Any suggestions about programs to use for sound processing?

Audacity.
It has many features, and I find it very easy to use and understand. I think its popularity attests to this.

I use Modplug Tracker, pdsounds.org to sample from and a wave editing tool to snip and amplify.....

I'd like to help with this work, but I don't know how.

I checked some of them from my Q3... and I have no idea about how to create something similar from scratch.

I've found here (http://freegamedev.net/wiki/Free_3D_and_2D_art_and_audio_resources) a list of free-stuff container sites, with some with PD or GPL license (but we have to check it is v2)..

I've started replacing missing sounds. Here's sound/world/x-bobber. It enables some maps (such as 79drgc2) to be fully compatible with OA.

I've edited it in audacity starting from this sound: http://www.pdsounds.org/sounds/energy_barrier_pad.

Hi, for creating new sounds one easy way is using a VST host (preferably a tracker software with support for VST) and getting some of the free VST plugins on the net. Some of these VST instruments will create very nice sounds/effects just by hitting the 'Random' button and playing a single note. Add to this some free VST effects and you could make quite a few sounds without having much knowledge about the audio programming - I sometimes spend hours playing with this but never thought of recording these. Once the output from the tracker soft is recorded to a file (and you'd i.e. need the sample looped I think Audacity(?) could do the trick).
hope this helps.

Since this regards missing replacements, may I ask... free as in beer, or free as in freedom?

Huh.. free as in "free" :| The websites I've seen do not say much about the license which might mean there is some catch behind?

On Windows I've tried this one:
VSTRON -> http://www.vetrixmusic.com/download_vstplugins.html
and this one:
UFO_ZE -> http://vstzone.sk/
some random generated examples included in the attach.

On Linux it might be easier to find a GPL virtual instrument. Also, on Linux there are LADSPA, DSSI and LV2 technologies which might be closer to/better suitable if complete tool-chain's license is an issue.. I think they are all royalty-free but could be wrong.

We cannot take risks regarding the licensing part. That's why I'm asking if it's compatible with GPL or not.

When you are using VST plugin, the resulting audio file is entirely your property, and may be released under any license you want, the same way as using GCC or MSVC does not make resulting executable file licensed under GPL or the property of Microsoft.

I recommend to check out Psycle (http://psycle.pastnotecut.org/portal.php), it's a free open-source music tracker, which comes pre-bundled with a bunch of free open-source VST plugins. It has a nice interface to chain several audio effects together, to achieve some unusual sound, however it's not very good for actually creating music  ;D

This is my first contribution to an open source project.
Is this what you are looking for?  If those listed in the original post are still missing, I can make many more sounds.

This thread is rather out of date (2009!), and that flame sound could use some compression and normalized volume around 45% or so

sounds like a real fire though.  OA's fire is made from little plastic bags

Ah soh-ry.  Where can I find the up to date list of missing sounds?
I fixed the fire.  I think.  I decided to mess with the EQ as well, to make the fire sound bigger and to get rid of the cricket noises.  http://www.2shared.com/audio/x6Z2Rqek/loop_fire_01a.html (http://www.2shared.com/audio/x6Z2Rqek/loop_fire_01a.html)
