Title: botch at
Post by: fromhell on March 18, 2010, 03:24:14 PM
Staring at a site full of oddities I have a sudden urge to rewrite the bots repsonses and all the lines.

It's too reinventofawheel indeed, but.... !  Q3's bots all happen to be English majors. UT bots only communicate by pre-recorded voice messages and Q3TA does that too.

I'm torn on how i'm going to write it though:
- stock responses will be the shorthand stuff, lol wtf and the like (makes bots blend in better)
- intentional bad grammar for some, intentional typos. not blatant like 'teh' but more like written with brawn over brains
- the personalities... I haven't figured that out. Everyone in OA currently is a COLD BLOODED KILLER and I don't like that.
- bowderizing. it's surreal when you got a game with high pressure blood coming out of bodies shot by big bosom clad dominatrix types yet all the worst is ever generated is 'darn'. This would be more for suiting derivatives that don't what a dataset full of none sense

I always liked that the bots didn't try to bring in bad feelings to the game. Computers are meant to serve, so bots are meant to server and yet they are lazy while typing?

While I can understand the urge to make the bot sound more real, I believe the chat are the least of there problem. Also bots speaking correctly have the benefit that they are easier to understand for people who are not that good in English. This is actually somewhat important. A few grammatical errors or slang and the message becomes unreadable by many.

Intentional badly typed text also gives a very negative expression about a product and is generally warned against. Not that it needs to be formal just not lazy. Even if you are lazy there is no reason to give yourself away.

I attached what I have done so far to this post. Take it.

Tell me what you think of it.

you beat the amnesiac! But some examples I have going with the style i had in mind which may or may not suck:

Code:
type "game_enter"
{
"To embrace the simulated slaughter of virtual individuals is what I have arrived in this binary space partition for";
type "level_end_lose"
{
"That concludes our test of the emergency whinecasting system.";
"";
"aw, goshdarnitalltoheckfireandgoshdarnyoutooandgoshdarkissuperhottoobadshesnotinthisgameanymoreshessmokinliketheheckfiresofheckwhichmakessensesincesheisasuccubusfromheckandshehasreallybigtalent";
"";
"";
"I have witnessed the total destruction of my score and this has driven me to water my daisy garden.";

type "hit_nodeath"
{
"not good enough darnit! not good enough!";
"";
"";
"";
"";
"I hit you and you did not die so i will hit you some more until you die";

By the way I can't open .xls files.

Maybe get some inspiration from actual player chat on online servers?

http://www.zvdk.nl/vspstats/themes/bismarck/index.php?

My stats serve random quotes, but i could grep the logs to find an enormous bunch if you would be interrested
