Title: OpenSUSE hates OpenArena
Post by: jumalauta on May 09, 2010, 04:34:06 PM
I made the switch to OpenSUSE after 2+ years of using Ubuntu and Mint. It's such an overall better OS :)

I switched two computers over to SUSE. The desktop runs OpenArena very smoothly. The laptop, however, which had NO problems at all with OA under Ubuntu can't do anything with OA. Sometimes OA freezes up and I need to reboot (not even xkill or kill will work). Other times, I cannot connect to the servers; laptop freezes on Awaiting Gamestate.

It works with other games. I patched it as well. I just extracted everything to my ~/ and hoped for the best. Like I said... works fine on the Desktop, but useless on laptop.

Help would be great.

I am using the proprietary Nvidia drivers. The desktop is using the open source intel drivers.

Hi and welcome on the board,

You should find some ways to get the logs.
- from your dmesg, when your X server freezes.
- from the game, by redirecting the output (i.e: openarena.i386 > ~/OAlog.txt)

If kill doesn't work, that means you have access to some terminal ? If yes, then try kill -9 the_oa_pid, it should kill it for good.

I did a reinstall and it works fine. But, I have a problem with the master servers. Whenever I refresh it knocks out my internet connection. I have to use the OA server list and do /connect in game to play.

Maybe this is of use to you: http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=3677.0
For knocking the connection out, all I know it that it gets all server IPs and then queries them each for infos. Maybe you can't handle the ammount of connections or something. I'd put all servers you like to favorites.

Yo,
This could be a router issue, see: http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=3277.0
