Title: Achievements
Post by: fromhell on May 16, 2010, 03:11:02 AM
I don't know if OA could have an achievement system considering the accountless anonymous nature, easily cheatable and farmings but..

Don't react well to bullet(sh)
Die by machinegun 100 times.

Super Spammerman
Kill a single player with 10 proximity bombs all set off at once.

Glorify the Weak
Score 400 damage on an armorless player with less than 20 health.

HSQ
Get 12 Holy Craps.

Always on time
Capture the flag on the last second of the round (non-Sudden death)

These ideas could be inserted into a mod...

Hehe, I like some.
Don't react well to bullets: 100 kills in one match, hmm... possible, I wonder how many frags I do with minigun on a standard match, that can be a lot.
Super Spammerman: would we be able to detect 10 bombs were used ... ?
Glorify the weak: how can we deal 400 damage ...
HSQ: 12 seems a bit much, can only be achieved voluntarily, but it happens we have like 4 in a row without big efforts.
Always on time: A nice one, people with timer displayed could try to get it more often.

IIRC, OAX already has something like this, sago was working on it long ago, and if I'm not mistaken, it's part of the Challenge system.

The stats/challenge system is prepared for recording the stats for the individual player.

In addition I am working on a games.log->database program that will allow continues logging (tail -f games.log | oa2db), dynamic data access (SELECT * FROM captures WHERE ...), player tracking per server (by hashed guid), fully object oriented design, prepared for multiple database backends and future log entry types. And it  that will be superior to the stat programs that uses games.log->html. It is inspired by an old thread by Czestmyr that highlighted some weaknesses in previous systems.

As always real life occasionally gets in the way. But it is so far in development that it would be a waste to give up now.

I joined a  CTF game today at the last minute when the score was 3 to 7. I chose the team with less people on it to try and balance it out since before I joined I was 1 vs. 5.I Made a few captures and I think one other person joined so at this point I was 3 vs.5. I fully thought we would lose a game like this but we won. So I was wondering if there could be an award for this. Some possible names I was thinking of are the hero award, savior award, or valor award. Anyway let me know what you guys think.

Also, about rail - there should be some award for getting several frags with one shot. Smth like "Skewer".

Maybe for the mass killing with one rocket|grenade|mine explosion ("Bomberman"), or plasma|BFG splash damage ("Energy Strike"), or shotgun|nailgun... emm... damage ("Pin master").

totally agree with this idea... I should add:

Barbecue: frag 5 opponents in a row with Lightning Gun
Last man standing: win a match without dying or opponent abandon. (NOT including CTF)
Power overwhelming: accumulate 100 frags with quad damage in a month
Air god: accumulate 250 air rocket/plasma/grenade frags
The Savior: Win a elimination round being the last alive
Revival: accumulate 25 won elimination rounds being the last alive
Fresh meat: humilliate 10 opponents in a match

The Savior: Win a elimination round being the last alive
This happens too often where there's one person left on each team. You know one of them will earn the award. Maybe you should have to beat at least 2 or 3 opponents by yourself to win the round and earn the award.

Statistics/achievements already defined and working in 0.8.5 are documented here:

(well, it would be better if the game itself would describe the powerup achievements...)

While searching for some level design documents for the Mapping manual at the Wiki, I've stumbled across this:

Gamasutra's How To Design Effective Achievements
Part 1 (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6360/the_cake_is_not_a_lie_how_to_.php) - Part 2 (http://www.gamasutra.com/view/feature/6375/the_cake_is_not_a_lie_how_to_.php) - Part 3 (http://)

It's a three-part article about, well, the whole ordeal behind Achievement design.
