Title: Default playername
Post by: sago007 on November 26, 2011, 05:12:58 PM
Currently the player will by default be called "UnnamedPlayer" and that is quite unpersonal. I am considering to instead set the default name to the value of the "username"-cvar.

However some might see this as a privacy issue.

If one sees ones own name in the Initial setup screen one might be more motivated to change it.
One could also consider just reading to the first space. Take the first 5 chars. Or maybe something else.

Some thoughts?

What about asking for playername on first run? If the system detects an "UnnamedPlayer", it prompts the user to introduce a name.

It already does that before connecting to multiplayer games. It does not do it earlier to not bug the user to much.

Yeah I don't like that either.

The last game I played that did that was ArmA II.

Chocolate-Doom also does this, and it's unchangable.

I'd suggest

something around that idea, probably without the little insult, and maybe greying out the multiplayer option if you're UnnamedPlayer.

Privacy is a big deal to me.  One thing a lot of the flash games do is just pop up a message on first launch to enter your name.  I'm sure a lot of players will be used to that, and consider it normal.

Maybe the current behavior (asking for it the first time you enter the Multiplayer menu) could be enough.

I don't know if there are so many UnnamedPlayers around to require a change (maybe I'll try to search for them on dpmaster)... but anyway, if you wanna change, I suggest avoiding to load the user name from OS: probably better a reminder, even if less invasive than the one in Fromhell's example.

I also think that fromhells example should be there but programed that if you click on it input field opens (where FH's notice is) and you can input your name with a notifier that you can change this name in options. From than on your chosen name would be displayed there.

I don't like the idea of taking any personal information and feeding it to the internet by default. Even if you ask the user if they want to change it, some users will skip past that screen.

Change the default name to something like "I pick my nose and eat it" and I imagine people will be more inclined to change it.
