Title: 0.8.8 released!
Post by: fromhell on February 20, 2012, 03:34:27 AM
- Mac is back!
- Two new single player campaign tiers
- New maps:
      am_lavaarena
      am_lavactf
      am_lavactfxl
      am_mckinleyish2
      am_spacecont
      am_thornish
      mlca1
      mlctf1beta
      oa_bases3p3ta
      oasago1
      oa_thor
      pul1duel-oa
      pxlfan

- New player model: Neko.
- Specular maps have been added to many player and weaponsmodels. These can be disabled by turning off detail textures.
- Invulnerability powerup and effects
- Grappling hook model, shader, and sounds
- Angelyss, Gargoyle have been reanimated
- Liz and SMarine animation glitches fixed
- Music
- Many of the old maps got entity tweaks, gametype unlocking and other fixes.
- Benchmark demo
- Fixed TEAMMATE kill message bug.
- Prevent team changing and disconnect from changing team score in Team Deathmatch.
- Don't let vampire resurrect dead players.
- Now uses FFA spawnpoints in domination.
- Workaround for Kamikaze bug.
- g_autonextmap added ("Auto change level" in the menu). Randomly picks a new map once the current map has ended. The maps allowed for each gametype are configurable.
- You can now see how much health the obelisk have left in Overload
- Autoswitch weapon can now be set to only change to better or new weapons.
- Chat beep can be disabled in options.
- Changed default customvotefile to customvote.cfg.
- Added the possibility for spawning in waves. The cvar g_respawntime says how often players should spawn.
- Added a CVAR g_voteBan X - bans a player for X minutes using the KK-admin system
- Added g_gravityModifier (default 1.0) that modifies g_gravity relatively to the value set by the map.
- Additional dmflags. Most notably "Fast weapon switch" and "No self damage".
- Added a CVAR g_damageModifier to modify damage of all weapons and triggers.
- Added replace_* cvars like disable_*. Can be used like "set replace_weapon_shotgun weapon_bfg" for replacing shutgun by BFG.
- Handicap is reset to 100 once returned to the main menu. It is no longer changeable thorugh the GUI to prevent new players from hurting themself.
- Added "Click to respawn"-message. Tells the player how long until they are allowed to respawn. Very relevant for wave spawning.
- New specular code, r_specmode 1 to enable
- New environment map code, r_envmode 1 to enable
- Cascaded bloom, which is more 'natural', and is much faster on lower end hardware r_bloom_cascade 1 to enable
- Support for GLSL shaders!
- Bloom is not allowed if we don't have 32-bit color for textures. This stops the user from playing with corrupt bloom in 16-bit color since the bloom code doesn't really support that yet.

Hi!
I should check again, but I'm quite sure the sentence about handicap that "It is no longer changeable thorugh the GUI to prevent new players from hurting themself." is not correct. Now the GUI warns the user that it makes you weaker, but the option still there (and I think it is good this way). It's true, instead, that it returns to default value when you quit from a match.

PS: if you want to mention the restored compatibility with third-party bots designed for Q3...

oh and make a big announcement for the new patch because people are still complaining that they can't join my server(because they don't have the 0.8.8 patch)
some people don't know about the patch.

also tell them to close the open arena exe while applying the patch because else
the old open arena exe will not get overwritten.
so they will still have the old open arena exe!!!

Great news!!! I do think this new release is a big enhancement from OA 0.8.5!

oh and make a big announcement for the new patch because people are still complaining that they can't join my server(because they don't have the 0.8.8 patch)
some people don't know about the patch.

When a news is posted here it's also posted on the frontpage, and the download section was also updated.

Tell them to update to 0.8.8.

We had MONTHS and even one and a half YEAR to fix the bugs for 0.8.8. It's not our fault that they weren't interested.

Add a "OA0.8.8" behind your servers name. Maybe they know which version they're using. :)

i already added 0.8.8 behind the servers names a few days ago.can't really make it more obvios.and people also tend to not read the motd.on my servers.one day i had a special event and announced it with both motd's and people still didn't know whats going on...
people need to learn to read :O
we should make a log in screen before people can join a server they would have to confirm that they read the text by clicking on a letter in the text XD

Checked again with the complete 0.8.8 download: Handicap has NOT been removed from the GUI (and, IMHO, it's good this way).
So, if you wanna change that phrase, Fromhell, and add something about bot compatibility...

Title: Re: 0.8.8 released!

1) You mean those player models? No. Theres' no source for any of them, all are non-commercial and also many are derivative, most of them use copyrighted Q3 biped files ID released and most of them are based on a property. Also, all are made with non-Free programs, so if we had sources (.max files typically) it would be no use.
2) Closed source, possibly GPL violating since it includes a modified engine with no source in sight.

hopefully i'll have time to download and test the latest release soon :)

don't do it...wait 5 years or so.
i'm already using the new patch on my servers since it was unofficially released now no one connected so far because no one has the patch.some people also still are only using 0.8.1 !!!
also can't use the new neko because everyone will see me as sarge because they are not using the patch.

I installed the new 8.8 the other day and I really like the updates guys. I especially like the Doom like music on the new aggressor and that lava map it brings back a great nostalgia  feeling. Also I was wonder is it just me or do have some of the bots gotten hard to hit, or am I just turning into a senile old man lol.

i said it before and i will say it again i joined open arena a few days ago.
and we have now 2012 and people are still running around with 0.8.1
i suggest to make the previous versions unplayable so they are forced to use the neweset patch/game

Setup your server for DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Automatic_downloading]automatic downloading (http://([b) (using a web server to allow fast downloads!), and most people connecting to your server will automatically get 0.8.5 and 0.8.8 patches installed (well, they would still use old binaries -autodownload works with pk3 files only-, but this should not be a big problem).

PS: creating a public server when the new patch was not yet official has not been a great idea. Please check that your server is using the official patch and not a previous ReleaseCandidate...

Title: Re: 0.8.8 released!
Post by: LauraNeko on February 21, 2012, 07:59:40 AM
the server is running the official one which you would know when you would read what i am writing all the time.and yes i have autodownlaod enabled.and no i don't have http download because i don't have an ftp server.and i don't wanna make one on my pc.

also most people who are joinign my servers don't have autodownload enabled in their configs!!!!!!!!!

they just connect and leave

and yes people CAN join my servers.

Title: Re: 0.8.8 released!
Post by: Gig on February 21, 2012, 08:46:05 AM
I asked that cause of this phrase of yours:
i'm already using the new patch on my servers since it was unofficially released
that required a confirm.  :) (that "unofficial realeased" sounds strange)

Anyway, you are not forced to host the http/ftp download on your machine: you can use a third-party service (e.g. dropbox) for that.
If users start downloadin an 80 MB file at 10 kB/s, it's obvious they will quit your server even in case they have autodownload enabled. Anyway, leaving autodownload disabled by default is a specific Fromhell design choice, and probably won't be changed.

About a server that is visible in internal browser, but not from dpmaster web site... I don't know what to think... I can suggest you to do more tests with the outgoing NAT rules to be sure that your heartbeat packets are not port-translated by your router/firewall (otherwise, master server will reply on the wrong port); Wireshark may be useful.

Be careful, there are two different autodownload cvars: one for clients (cl_allowDownload) and one for servers (sv_allowDownload). Please check that the server one is enabled.

And indeed, as Gig pointed out, an HTTP download might help because people will disconnect by themselves if the download is too slow.

LauraNeko, like Gig suggested, I think you and all Admins ought to use a 3rd Party for redirects.  First, there are several no-cost and no-nag services like those offered by http://www.Dropbox.com, http://x10hosting.com, http://www.000webhost.com and http://freeftpspace.org.  Second, it's inconsiderate for any admin not to take advantage of the aforementioned services and instead have their visitors suffer snail-paced downloads.

However, concerning the autodownload issue I feel your pain because while many visitors to this Forum have autodownload enabled (or know how to enable it) most OA players don't have it enabled and never will.  These casual and temporary players just want to play and will never take the time to delve into the game.  As soon as they see any roadblocks they move on to other games because its easier.

Just thinking... this thread is for the 0.8.8 release announcement: we should continue the tech discussions in the "technical snafus" section of the forums.

Title: Re: 0.8.8 released!
Post by: GrosBedo on February 21, 2012, 01:57:36 PM
I think that the problem is more about anthropology than technicality. Even if you set an http download, many players will just abort the autodownload because the update is too big. I've seen it happen before.

Just wait for players adoption. This can't be helped.

On the left column of the frontpage:

Quote
Current Release: 0.8.8
Released: Feb 2012
Download full ZIP, or the patch

Next Release: 0.9.0
ETA: 2012?

Unless you guys have a really precise plans with included margins for bugs fixing, it would be advisable to set a far higher date than this one, like 2013, because else you will have people complaining that the next release is late, when in fact the date was too soon to be attended.

Yep, and it's a feature, not a bug. I don't fully agree with that feature, but well...

If i had played the game more then twice i am bored about the typical Microsoft question "Are You _Realy_Sure to quit the game?" -> "Yes" "Of Course" "Sure"

Next question: "realy? Think about it twice!"
Followed by:.
"We can not believe in your decision! Please try again."

If i click "quit" i like to quit the game.
No more questions plz - this is windows behaviour.
In rl (tm) nobody asks you about your decisions if they are trivial like this!

If somebody makes the wrong decision (1 of a hundred times) he is able to restart OA in - lets say - 5 seconds. No data lost, no probs.

So i am fine with this solution (just my ,02$)

PS: do you know this?
"Sie haben ihren Mauszeiger bewegt, der neue Treiber wurde installiert. Windows neu starten?"
"Ja" "Natürlich" "Aber sicher"

Title: 0.8.8 is uit!
Post by: RMF on February 26, 2012, 03:15:04 PM
Dutch translation

- Mac is terug!
- Twee nieuwe singleplayer campagne levels
- Nieuwe maps:
      am_lavaarena
      am_lavactf
      am_lavactfxl
      am_mckinleyish2
      am_spacecont
      am_thornish
      mlca1
      mlctf1beta
      oa_bases3p3ta
      oasago1
      oa_thor
      pul1duel-oa
      pxlfan

- Nieuw speler model: Neko.
- Hoogglans is toegevoegd aan veel speler- en wapenmodellen. Deze kunnen uitgeschakeld worden door 'detail textures' uit te schakelen.
- Onkwetsbaarheid power-up en effecten
- Grappling hook model, shader en geluiden
- Angelyss en Gargoyle zijn opnieuw geanimeerd
- Liz en SMarine animatie foutjes gefixed
- Muziek
- Veel oude maps hebben wat kleine verbeteringen gekregen, zoals het mogelijk maken van meer speltypes (gametypes).
- Een demo is toegevoegd om de prestaties van de game te meten
- TEAMMATE kill-bericht fout is verbeterd.

I personally never really like Dutch translations because they sound unnatural, also commercially translated text is hardly ever translated correctly, but if it helps the community I think a translation should be provided.

Some things I left untranslated or put a translation next to the English term (if there was no correct translation, or when it might cause confusion). For example I provided cvar names with a translation of what they mean, but left the cvars themselves unchanged.

I don't understand why we are continuing to provide a wrong info in all versions of this news. It is still  possible to change handicap from the menu! (At least, accessing Player Settings it from main menu... I don't know if following other paths..)

I neither understand. But I think that's understandable: the staff has too many different roles to assume at the same time, and so they can't keep up with everything.

I think that the staff should open some rooms for a few specialized people (eg: one person to exclusively maintain news and the website should do a lot of good and spare out some burden on the main devs and modelers).

If anything gets changed in the original news and needs to be changed in my translation, just send me a PM if I don't read it here.

I don't know why I even have translated news forums anymore. We don't have localization on the main site either...

A forum is pretty straight-forward to use, most work the same in any language. Also 'news' is a word most people will understand, even if they don't really speak English. If they go into the news board and discover a dutch translations board, I guess they'll read it.

Maybe it's an idea to collect all translations in one news post, and create an index of translations at the top so people see they can scroll down for the news in their language. This would also appear on the homepage then.... Yeah I think this is a better idea than multiple boards for translations :).

Having news translation is also good for communication strategy because external news websites can (and will) directly copy the news corresponding to the language of their audience.

well I added http://download.tuxfamily.org/openarena/rel/088/ to the mirrors (as usual)

Who can add it to http://openarena.ws/download.php?view.4 ? (we've got a CDN)

Do the 0.8.8 patch install and make 0.8.1 into 0.8.8? When 0.8.1 joins a 0.8.8 server, will it download all the needed files?

For the 0.8.8 patch you also need the 0.8.5 patch, and should install it in this order: 0.8.1, 0.8.5, 0.8.8.

However, it should be possible to get both 085 and 088 patch pk3s via autodownload. However, updated executables cannot be obtained using autodownload (you can continue using 081 binaries anyway).

PS: it's just important that you do not place 085 pk3 under "homepath" folder while having 088 pk3 under installation folder (to prevent issues caused by file loading order)... those two files should be in the same directory ("baseoa" under homepath or under installation folder).
