Title: Sketches
Post by: Dancar on February 27, 2012, 02:00:13 PM
I've made a messy sketch where I added tiny ideas to some default OA models.

Of course it's public domain: use it, ignore it, no worries.

Post by: Dancar on March 18, 2012, 12:40:54 PM
I've made four sketches.

1) Silver and gold double shotgun. The design is simple but I like the idea.

2) Fut-elfyr. Many seem to like vampires so I tried to make one not too predictable.

3) Vampires Hunter. Just an handsome (well, not in the sketch) guy
with a strange trench coat. I think he could be a sort of
"Vampire May Cry" with white hair and red coat, but dunno
about copyright, so I suggested other colors.

4) Puritan Purificator (my favourite [not the sketch]). A Frankestein's monster-like assembled by a crazy puritan to purge world of evil.

Everything is made from scratch (search Google) and is public domain.

Nice sketches! I like how they quite clearly describe your ideas.

Personally I particularly like the Puritan Purificator and Fut-Elfyr. Also, the shotgun can be quite good if a good metallic shader is applied.

And you're quite right, Arachna should have a crown, it's one of the best character currently in OA ;)

Below a pic, the only silver and gold "gun" I found, it gives an idea how the mix should be.

I kinda like fut-elfyr

This is awsome - wish i could draw like that.

I like the design of the shotgun - like the OA machinegun it has a quite steampunky look :-*

@fromhell

thanks

@noChance79

Thanks, the shotgun looks steampunk probably because it looks classic and modern at the same time.

Now some new sketches:

1) Light machine gun. Design is really simple, no more to say.

2) Pro. I tried to beefed up Sarge, with fluorescent orange armor and yellow/white stripes he should also have a good visibility. For gesture I will make him raising the weapon with an electronic yell (Just an idea).

3) Hover Volley girl. Don't know exactly why I have a done a girl with a volley-ball suit and a set of (ridiculous) funny mask, but here you are, tha masks are 16, just to fill the paper.
Theorically you can make also a male version with a basket-ball suit.
(circles are for logo)

4) Fetish Ninja. No, she doesn't come from Bulletstorm or System Shock, but she could, IMO.
The suit should be black, but I write purple or pink just for visibility.

Machinegun - It's a tad short (there's a gun outline layout pic around here somewhere showing the region of the handle, the pump area for the left hand and the suggested size  extremities) We need a spinning barrel - for OA3 i'm going to go for a triangle shaped tri-barrel since a lowest LOD would make that REALLY low.

Sarge - Looks more like a candidate for a s_marine redesign rather. It also looks shaped to turn into a truck if you know what I mean, or he's a fanboy of those that turn into a truck.

Hover Volley girl - okay now this is interesting, because it's not sailor fuku. The masks can be done by headmodel instances with shared texture atlas between them all for missionpack. I'd probably have to have 4 max though. Reminds me a bit of that ninja in Tekken. Octy, Kitty, Penguy, and Pandy are good ones.

Fetish Ninja - yeah I think the + pasties and "horse bit" make it a bit too raucous into BDSM territory (and some people thought rope slings were bad!).   It does remind me of Dungeon Keeper's mistress a lot (*COUGH* Q3ARevolution*COUGH*), Battle Arena Toshinden's Ivy a lot, and Star Trek's Geordi Laforge a lot. Also the role might overlap too much with Dark (who is a succubus)

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: Dancar on April 30, 2012, 07:51:01 AM
1) the gun maybe looks short, but it's a drawing, a model can be long/big as you wish.

2) Pro looks like a '80 toy, I think he's nice for this. The idea of a strong man with robotic armor cames from Phantasy Star Online.

3) My favourite mask is Piggy.

4) I like reference/citation from classics/pop icons, but if she's too nasty, she's too nasty...

Some more pics.

1. A rail gun. Design is simple like usual.

2 Steel Ronin. Always liked that big asian hat.

3 Ninja Cyborg. A classic that looks classic.

4 Kuza-san. A yakuza with super powers (in Japan your hair stand up when you're super).

new sketches:

1) Lightning gun. Simple design.

2) Gladarian. Barbarian gladiator, pretty stereotyped, but I like him (with face B).

3) Deary Fairy. Tried to do a cute character.

4) Open Ogre. He's not low poly (maybe with a chainmail tunic), just for fun.

Lightning gun is highly remiscent of the Tribes disc launcher

I kinda like that fairy.

Open Ogre looks drawn good but stylistically would fit more into Sauerbraten which could use a proper iqm ogre replacement itself, since that ol 1998 ogro md2 is looking pretty dated now :P

By the way have you ever seen Casshern and played Turrican 2? I'm gonna aim for a Sarge with that kind of powersuit design.

There is no ink, just pencil, so the pics are worse than usual.

1. Lethadroid.  A lethal android with metal plates screwed on flexible light suit (like chainmail or whatever).
The screws are important to give an idea of "tank thing".

2. Pro v2. A less goofy and trucky version of Pro (The pencil is pretty light).

Pro V2 kind of reminds me of tom from toonami

4 more.

1. Rocket launcher.

2. Cyber surfer with floating board.

3. Cyborg mummy.

4. Tetris kossack (I love this one!).

That RL reminds me, for some reason, of Marvel: Avengers Alliance's Rocket Pistol (http://avengersalliance.wikia.com/wiki/Rocket_Pistol).

+1 for cyborg mummy and +1 for the Tetris Kossack (this one is my favourite, I would love to see this character in the game)

I know you all like the Tetris Kossack, but I wouldn't model it, because, well,  Tetris is a registered (and very actively protected) trademark of The Tetris Company

I do like the Mummy and i'm already thinking of modeling him, because fps games don't have enough mummies.

Arachna might make it back in but her hair would have to be shorter, maybe put in some sort of bun, which would cancel out the godiva hair she had before so hmm. Maybe she'll be a naga instead to keep the bone count down in the lower body

I honestly (and naively) thinked that "Tetris" was public domain.
But It's not really a problem (maybe I'm naive again), because you can just call him "Kossack" or "Tetrakossack" or something like that.

Now about blocks textures of the hat: they are called "tetrominos" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetromino). I don't think they are copyrighted,  maybe only if you associate the same colors of Tetris's tetrominos.
Still you can use pentominos (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentomino).

The real problem is that I've put "Tetris" Kossack on my Deviantart page, releasing him under public domain  ::)

Yeah

mmm... what about adding flickering lights (like a Christmas tree) on top of "antennas/needles"?

I had this idea after I've made the sketch.

I like the needles as they are. Adding little lights would make his head look like a christmas tree

It's all cool and well, but since this is already in Idea Pit, well... remember that OA is steering away from the common and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overused "grimdarkbrownseriousandgrittywhereeveryoneisabadass" stereotype found in FPS.

@ all
Thanks

remember that OA is steering away from the common and waaaaaaaaaaaaaay overused "grimdarkbrownseriousandgrittywhereeveryoneisabadass" stereotype found in FPS.

Ok,
but whatever style you are going to use for OA, I think you should mantain at least one classic sci-fi_sport_helmet_badass soldier for the following reasons:

1) You will always use classic sci-fi FPS weapons.
2) It's a link and tribute to the origins.
3) Some people force models for visibility and a good "sport skin" should be welcome.
4) Others force models for stylistic reasons: they prefer gunfights against and with sci-fi soldiers (expecially during teams based games).
5) This version of sarge is half sci-fi_soldier and half sci-fi_athlete, I think He will fit whatever style/map/game you are going to do.
6) I think it's the best sketch I'v done so far :P

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: Neon_Knight on May 13, 2013, 06:54:16 AM
2) It's a link and tribute to the origins.
This is one of the reasons he will be redesigned for future versions such as DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/OA3]OA3 (http://([b), so he looks less Doomguy-like. Right now, we're on the "no ripoff/knockoff" side.

3) Some people force models for visibility and a good "sport skin" should be welcome.
That's a problem with visibility on maps, something we're trying to address and hopefully fix on future versions.

4) Others force models for stylistic reasons: they prefer gunfights against and with sci-fi soldiers (expecially during teams based games).
They have many other games to do this. I don't get why every FPS should have the same thematic.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: Dancar on May 15, 2013, 02:18:07 PM
That's a problem with visibility on maps, something we're trying to address and hopefully fix on future versions.

I only know that all this kind of games have official or UNofficial flamboyant skins for visibility.

They have many other games to do this. I don't get why every FPS should have the same thematic.

So, OA gameplay must keep classic, but not a single OA model must look classic.
Well, I disagree but it's just my opinion.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: Neon_Knight on May 15, 2013, 08:04:59 PM
For classic gameplay + classic looks, there's already Q3A itself. No need to be redundant.

Title: Re: Sketches

I read that, with just 1 modeler left, It's hard to see new model for the project (no kickstarter?)

Anyway, I've made a colored version for my Tetromino Kossack, just for fun.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: fromhell on July 30, 2014, 03:20:49 PM
more accurately, there's one player modeler left, and two new weapon model contributors (that modeled off my rough weapon concepts, and I feel really bad because i'm a major procrastinator :().

I have been drawing plenty of stuff lately, you might want to check the OA3 forum.

also i've been hacking up the engine with some important things OA needed for a long long time. Code progress (https://github.com/OpenArena/)

I'm in the middle of moving and don't have a lot of time...is the code base buildable?  I'd be happy to test and help debug if it is...

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: fromhell on August 04, 2014, 09:47:30 AM
It's buildable.  Might need libxmp though, since that's a very recent library.

The only real help I need with the engine is the integration with Q3MME's scriptable fx system (particles) in the client.  They're not compilable as-is right now.

Also there's a bit of memory leak I can't seem to figure out for playing back mod files with the xmp support.  It doesn't seem to unload them when they're done even though it's in the code :/

Title: Re: Sketches

1) Finally the final post about sarge/pro.

I've made a colored version of sarge/pro because I was curious to see him with colors, and I thinked the
case was closed.

But I saw a bike helmet, and then I decided the last modification. He is not so bad: more sport less quakey. I've made a simple collage for it.

2-3) Some weapons concepts, design is minimal and proportions are not mandatory.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: andrewj on August 10, 2014, 12:36:47 AM
I think your Sarge/pro + those weapons would be great in a new game of their own.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: fromhell on August 10, 2014, 06:34:35 AM
indeed, these are far too 90 degree-angled to suit the current OA3 project.

Title: Re: Sketches
Post by: DILZNIK on August 10, 2014, 03:35:00 PM
These sketches are pretty damn good. But instead of them being new mock ups of existing models, they could and should go on and be there own. An expansion of characters for the game would be nice. I can't express how cool they look from my first view of them. I'm sure these would be considered, and would be in favor of there own models.

Maybe a few polls on this would be good?

1) Who likes the sketches?

2) Should they be considered expansion characters?
