Cg_fragmsgsize IS working, at least for baseoa. Default value is 1.0. You can set it to 0.5 to have it half size... or to 0 to do not see it at all (the feature you are asking for is already in the game). I suppose that you were using an "old MOD", where that variable is not supported (I just tried in Q3A, it seems that did not exist there). While playing a such mod, you have to live together with the frag message.
