Title: "Stupid" question about GPL (or GPLv2).....
Post by: Akom74 on January 13, 2014, 01:48:02 PM
Hi to all.

I have a question about releasing materials under GPL (or GPLv2).

If i make a texture with Gimp or an object 3D in Blender,
how can i release it under GPL (or GPLv2) ??

Simply release it with the COPYING file added at the pack, or more is needed ?

I'm boring you with this, but i really don't understand how GPL (or GPLv2) work....

;)

If you made a texture with GIMP, aside of the texture, you have to attach the .xcf file which is the "source" of your job. And also include the license file. One such file is COPYING, and it's located in the folder of the game.
If you made a model with Blender, the procedure is the same, except that you have to attach the .blend file.

That's in a nutshell how you work with GPLv2.

Thank you.

The sections in the wiki about Models/Blender maybe may require some work (by Fromhell, the one who knows most
about modeling?). Example: I have no idea about where to find updated MD3 import/export plugins for current Blender version (2.69)... in the wiki there is a link to a plugin which mentions version 2.49. I don't know if it's compatible with other Blender versions.

Yep, it's simpler than it sounds. Photoshop also works, with the .psd files being the source.

AFAIC there's no md3 exporter for 2.6x versions, the 2.49 plugin is broken and needs a rewriting in order to adapt it to the newer versions. It's written in Python, so someone who knows how to write plugins in Python for Blender may be able to fix it.

You could also stick the GPL license in the blend file as an internal text block, and have that shown in the interface when saved.

It seems that I've missed something. Here's an exporter for 2.6.3
http://forums.duke4.net/topic/5358-blender-26-md3-export-script/

I haven't tested it yet, though. I don't even know if it's compatible with later versions.

Pointless - no tag support. Tags are vital

Does it work for simple mapmodels, at least?
