OpenArena Message Boards

The master server is not responding for online play. Investigating further shows that it is unavailable outside of the game as well (through Internet browsers). The domain, deathmask.net, is listed by the DNS servers, but fails to respond to any HTTP requests or network pings.

Does anyone have any information about this? Is it working for you?

It works for me.

It definitely works for some, others it doesn't.  Met some more people on the ciggaweed server last night that dpmaster wasn't working for them. Only reason they could access the server because they had it their favorites. My VPS which runs an OA server still can't access it. So you'll just need the IP of the server you want to play at until whatever is going is resolved.

LOL fromhell nice I am a web developer and I got a little chuckle out of that. WHEN IS THE SERVER GOING TO BE UP? It is so frustrating because I never recorded the IP address for CTF All Rockets or ROFL   

People, master server going down is a problem outside of the reach of OA. It even affects Warsow, Xonotic and Nexuiz. There's nothing we can do about that.

There is something you can do however.


Set sv_master4 to 64.22.107.125

It definitely works for some and not others. I've tried using OpenArena with other IP's and I was able to connect to OpenArena. At some people's homes it works, at others It doesn't. I guess a group of IP's are selected at the moment, that can connect to servers.

somebody knows where to check news about dp master?
its monday and almost 17:03 here...and its 3 days i cant play..and changing server master wont help, not me at least.

Currently, I cannot reach dpmaster's web page from my PC, too.

Trying to reach http://dpmaster.deathmask.net from some reachability testing sites:

Seems to confirm it's reachability is only partial, at the moment... Some servers around the world reach it, others not... I can guess we can only wait...

Thanks, all, for the update. I too checked availability outside of the game with the same results - the deathmask.net domain is unresponsive. When I didn't see anything posted I began to wonder if it was just my ISP, but now I know otherwise.

I will resort to manual entry of server IPs until they get this fixed, assuming I can find the IPs I want.

I am on the southeastern coast of the US and I get nothing. I can join if I have the IP I dont have the IP for All Rockets or any of the all rockets CTF servers IP. Does anyone have this info?

I think the reason why it is up for some and down for others is the result of a DNS (Domain Name Server) change. I believe the server has changed IP from 64.22.107.125 to 213.163.83.191, and that they have updated the DNS record for the domain. It will take some time for this to propagate througout the world and it might take up to several days in some countries, just be patient. :-)

Does someone (Fromhell, maybe?) know how to contact Willis, Deathmask's dpmaster maintainer IIRC, to ask what's going on?

I'm quite sure the story has been told what's going on with the master server somewhere on the OA forum.

I wrote to willis and he said it was a ddos.

Afaik 21 servers are listed now.

As wing0 has pointed out, my master server did suffer a DDoS attack, during which the IP was null routed.

Today, I have moved the dpmaster to a new IP address (107.161.23.68, but same hostname, dpmaster.deathmask.net) which should be more resilient towards such attacks.

For the next 48 hours, listings may be a little odd as some servers will be contacting the old master IP (still running), and some may be on the new.

However, as has been pointed out, an alternative master server is always a good idea.

I should also point out, with the move, the master server now also supports IPv6.  dpmaster.deathmask.net now has an AAAA record, the actual IP address is 2604:180::4ac:98c1

It will only solve the issue of the default master not listing IPv6 at all.  His master server has not been up for quite some time as far as I can tell.  The patches he applied to dpmaster I believe are either already updated in the source or handled dynamically.

As for the client browser only sending IPv4 or IPv6 and not both, that would be an engine/ioq3 issue.
