I dont think so.... Fromhell speacks clearly time ago, the future is OA3, and another version of OA 89 90 91 92 etc. will never be released (unfortunately...).

;)

Yes, OA3 is the future. No other version will be released in the middle time.

Long story short: because of the uncaring "throw everything you can find as long as its FOSS" approach taken with the earlier versions, current versions of OA suffer of a lack of quality (this said by Fromhell), therefore OA3 is an art-wise reboot (code-wise is going to be the same as past versions; i.e. still ioquake3 NOT moving to another engine) with better characters, maps, GUI artwork, sound and the like.

Physics, weapon functionality, gametypes, etc. will be the same as they were in OA 0.x.

There won't be a 0.9.0, although before the reboot was decided there was indeed a 0.9.0 version planned, but it was scrapped.

It's also hard to do 0.9.0 when the roadmap is "100% textures compatibility" or something like that....when you're not a map texture artist.  Same goes for fixing everyone's animations, many of the rigs are too screwed and are a lost cause.

OA3 has the same 0.8.8 texture set plus a few new unique texture sets for its own levels, because doing this alone makes me less interested in "painting by the numbers". It also treats missing textures differently, it has a proper placeholder texture now, so things aren't glowing white/gray boxes anymore.

and finally version control systems suck for content., especially when there's something previously infracting and you want it gone, and they try to obstructify all the ways you can amend that technically and philospohically (often contradictory to their own license, becomes a scar on one's consience).

I just don't like how OA3 development is behind closed doors, with know way of knowing how much progress was made, or how close OA3 is to completion, if it's close at all.

Fromhell is doing a very good job (http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=5034.0), quality it's improved, new graphic for characters, items and weapons.

If she want to give us a beta version to try we will be very happy, if not i think that's no problem  xD.

Btw, i hope to download a playable (and stable) version as soon as possible  :giggity:  :giggity: ...

Fromhell is doing a very good job (http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=5034.0)...

Like I said, behind closed doors (I and many others can't access that link).

Does anybody know what is needed to be able to access the OA3 forums? Post count? Credentials? Anything?

If you're curious about OA3's current state, i'll spill it out here:

0 finished maps
6 WIP maps
7 working player models
8 working weapon models
0 tracker songs
122 new sound effects
21 menu screens
38 openarena/engine commits, many involving new engine features (like widescreen, overbright fixes, sunflares, safe alternative content loading, detail texture improvements, model eye system, tracker music playback, placeholder media support, etc)

What about maps like OA_suicizer? Such are pretty much done.
