Myself and the guys over at www.map-center.com have released a set of our maps converted to be compatabile with Open Arena.

6 Deathmatch maps are included.

You can download the pack from here: http://files.filefront.com/mc_oa_mappackzip/;7001095;;/fileinfo.html

Server admins, please let us know if you put our maps in rotation as we'd all love to play you guys at them.

Please note that these maps are NOT released under the GPL (The custom textures are not released under a GPL compatable license) and this is NOT AN OFFICIAL OA RELEASE.

That said, I hope you guys enjoy playing them.

Why not release the textures under the GPL?

Why not release the textures under the GPL?

Because I'm not the IP owner.

Damn, these maps are so frickin sweet. Maybe you will allow some people to take them and try to replace their textures with GPL'd ones? Don't know, just a thought.

Nice. I have just played them all once to see how they feel. And they there great.

Also good variation between the maps.

Most of the textures in my maps are made by me. The .maps are included so feel free to do whatever the heck you want with them. If you are unsure of which textures that need to be removed contact me and we can sort it out.

We can't touch the maps legally within this project unless you are willing to license them under the GPL or a compatible license for us, it sounds like you are willing to do that but we need more than a "do whatever the heck you want with them."  A small zip or tar.bz2 file that includes the maps and a copy of the GPL and your readme should cover the legalities.

I doubt that'll happen, as I think I recognize some of other's work like metlslime's textures in that sandy map up there

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: dmn_clown on March 22, 2007, 03:58:28 pm
I was talking about the maps, not the textures or models.  We can always re-texture them and use our own models for what people don't want to license under the GPL for whatever reason.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: Blaenk on March 22, 2007, 06:54:48 pm
dmn_clown, that's exactly what I meant :)

If this could happen, it'd be great! For those who don't understand, basically if the map itself were under the GPL (Not necessarily the textures, just the .map file), then we could re-texture them with GPL'd textures ourselves :D If whoever is the original author of these maps would approve of this, it'd be great for all of us! These maps look like top quality!

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: Amphetamine on March 22, 2007, 07:25:31 pm
Just to clarify the intention here: This was created in a short timeframe by taking some maps we already had with little existing id software content in them and modifying them to be OA compatable. This was done because we wanted to give the players here a new selection of 100% compatable maps to play while you're waiting for more official ones.

As much as I would like to make a map that is releaseable under the GPL, I have not yet found a matching set of textures of sufficient quality and in a style that I want to work with that are under a GPL compatable license. Most texture sets I work with are distributed under a CC 2.0 or similar license which prohibits comercial use. Making my own textures would not be out of the question, but it would be a serious time sink if I had to create a large amount of the visual media myself due to my art skills being comparable to those of a house brick (I use MapZone2 to make textures procedurally, but it's very time consuming).

Did you actually read what we said a couple times? If you were kind enough as to release the actual maps under the GPL (JUST the map, not the textures, etc.), then we could re-texture them ourselves. And thanks to the open source nature, we could all contribute, and if it sucks in version something, it'll get better in version something+1. Just clarifying, up to you whether or not of course.

When I said "feel free to do whatever the heck you want with them" I meant that I would release all content (including textures) under GPL if you want to use it in this project. 90 % of the textures are created by me. Of course its up to you if you want to replace the textures or keep them. If you want me to release under GPL just let me know and I will.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: dmn_clown on March 23, 2007, 12:10:22 am
If you are willing to release your content and maps under the GPL for us, please do so, stjartmunnen.  We need a bigger selection of maps and textures to keep Logan from whining about being bored.

Ofc I read everything written, that was just a statement to clarify my original intentions.

The trouble with that is though that I don't map with the intent of others seeing the source file. As such it's messy in there. I'm actually prety tempted to release the .map just to see how big a headache it would cause the person trying to re-work it.

Right, I've gotta go out. Will muse on that point while I'm gone.

I would highly doubt your maps are really that bad, I've played around with iD's Quake 1 maps (Now THERE is a nightmare) Z-fighting galore...

It's not a major issue with the constuction as such. I had to do some nasty hacks to stop the bots from taking a hot bath every 10 seconds and I feel kinda embarased letting people see the solution I had to resort to.

You'll need to light with: -light -fast -bounce 8 -patchshadows -gamma 2 -compensate 3 -dirty -samples 4 -nocollapse -v

Don't forget to add the external lightmaps into the pk3.

I'll get the map zipped up and sent. Best of luck to you.

Oh, could you possibly pm me a copy of the text I need for the license? Cheers.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: Blaenk on March 23, 2007, 06:34:19 pm
Don't worry, now that it's open source we can improve it/fix it if it needs any! :D

Here's the text, ( http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt ). Just put it inside a file called LICENSE or something, copy and paste everything in that link into there. Also make a README file if you want, saying you are the original author and crediting people who helped if you can, and mentioning that the things are released under the GPL which they could read in the LICENSE file, just a thought, don't know if all of this is really necessary though.

Not trying to push you or anything dmn_clown but I'd really like to see them :( I can't use them yet anyways I just want to see what they're like, but it's alright take your time. So are they finally GPL'd officially?

Projectile Vomiting and Shine (mc-oa-dm02 and dm04) have been GPL'd

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: Amphetamine on March 24, 2007, 12:07:02 pm
My .map file has been GPL'd. Not sure on what timeframe dmn_clown is working to with regard to changing the textures over to GPL compatable ones though.

I'm now thinking about making somthign that doesn't use textures so I can make somthing for you guys without any problems.

Not too long you happened to choose evillair textures that are available in Nexuiz as did stjartmunnen so probably sometime early next week.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: sago007 on March 25, 2007, 10:29:28 am
I took revision 204 from SVN and I could see that shince and pvomit was included.

After playing those version I most way that flares looks nice on oa_pvomit.

But I think the flares are too much in oa_shine (I know its called 'shine' but still). I don't think they directly affect gameplay but I don't think they make the map look better either. Og course I can just continue playing the ones from the map pack.

As far as my map goes, the teleporter model belongs to Evil Lair as well as the Light textures, they came from Evil 8 texture set. As for the rest of the textures they are a mix from 3 or 4 different people .It would definitely just be easier to retexture the map. Although I would rather do it myself. If someone could point me in the direction of some textures(other than what is in oa at the moment)I would like to give them a look.

Not ripping on you here, but you could have accomplished the same thing by simply duplicating your lava brush and making it a "nodrop" brush.  The bots were jumping to their death because of the dropped items (That applies to all pits of death/voids/etc.).   Also, the clusterportal shader will only work correctly if there is one entrance/exit to an area that you are trying to divide into a portal.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: Amphetamine on March 27, 2007, 08:25:23 pm
If you wander around my map with "/bot_testclusters 1" you will see that my cluster portals work as they are supposed to. Unfortunately you seem to have picked up some incorrect information regarding them. I sugest reading through Cardigan's tutorial on the subject: http://cardigan.planetquake.gamespy.com/tips_botopt.html

Didn't think that bots "went for" dropped weapons as much as they just randomly pick them up because they are in their path. I've often seen a freshly spawned bot run straight past a dropped RL on their way to another weapon and have never seen them go out of their way for a dropped weapon. I think it's more an issue of bot's gravitating downwards. After all, if you have a  vertical level without a tele or JP at the bottom, all your bots will be found sulking in the basment.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: dmn_clown on March 27, 2007, 11:41:24 pm
You are mistaken, bots go after dropped items and that is why they are jumping into the lava in your level.  When you remove the dropped items, bots no longer jump into the lava.  The nodrop shader does this.

Four choices:  Use nexuiz's textures, checkout our svn, checkout open frag's textures (http://forum.openfrag.org/list_messages?id=757) (Making damned sure that they _are_ licensed under the GPL first), or use the GPLed textures you can find here (https://some really really lame site you don't need to go to/ftoma/tex.html) I wouldn't trust the Public Domain stuff at that link.

If you don't like those, make your own original textures, other than that we can't help.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: kaustic on March 30, 2007, 07:23:57 pm
I hadent notice earlier(mostly because of where I opened the file) that in the texture pk3 that is in OA there are textures from Evil Lair. If his work is ok to use under the GPL then I would use his textures .

edit: After doing some reading in the forum and looking at Evil Lairs website,it seems I'm barking up the wrong tree. This is directly from Evil Lairs website - http://www.evillair.net/v2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=40&Itemid=66.

He granted them to be GPL'd when Nexuiz went GPL in early 2005, otherwise it would have been a license nightmare. OpenArena's use of his textures come from Nexuiz (which is GPLed), not from his site.

I thought I read somewhere OpenFrag's media isn't GPL. Hrm.

Title: Re: Map-Center Open Arena Map Pack released!
Post by: dmn_clown on March 31, 2007, 08:11:16 am
Their models are cc-by-2.5 (Non-GPL compatible), that texture pack has 0 licensing info, from what I can see other than the forum post.  So they are probably using a stupid license.

i really should come on the OA forums more, i love the look of these maps and will be putting them up on the threemenwise mappack server
also i will include them in the upcoming second edition of the TMW mappack

of cource it would be event better if we can get the textures fixed up so they can be included in the next official build

I'm doing some work on this one, I took some more evillair's textures from Nexuiz which were needed for this map, and I'm doing the replacements for the other textures as well.

I think it's a very nice DM map, OA needs maps like this one.

(I'm gonna need some help with textures too -.-)

I agree .... this map is awesome to play ... I've played a lot it locally with bots because the only server hosting it was/is Beer Garden but I have a ping of 200 there.

there was another big (but not heavy ) FFA map I've played a lot locally because I've never found it online : lastarena ( lastarena.pk3 ) ... dunno about textures , but it comes with the source so I think it can be rearranged for OA.

EDIT : it lastarena comes with the source , but it is distribuited under the ..::LvL Open Game Source License .... so .... forget about it what I've wrote.
