Title: Quake 3 engine: Not just for games!!
Post by: atphalix on April 26, 2007, 12:23:05 PM
Quake engine is great and now that it is under the gpl it offer more rooms for creativity and use in other area, like architectural design and virtual tours of buildings.
I think that quake can be used an an alternative to other propritary engine line unrealhttp://www.unrealty.net/vsmm99/ (http://www.unrealty.net/vsmm99/).
well, I'm personally going to make some house and display them but I still need to find a way to hide
the weapon of view I use the commande
Code:
/toggle cg_draw2d
in the console to hide the HUD.
but what about weapon? do I need to change the source/creat mod?
A talk at the BBC about the subject (in 2000): http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/982346.stm (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/982346.stm)
what do you think?

/cg_drawGun 0

Quake3 doesn't have good dynamic light support that the previous quake engines had for the sake of speed (alot of cards in the 90s had sucky texture upload bandwidth)

apparently xreal has dynamic lighting. you'll get a lower fps than using the quake3 engine, but for walking around houses that shouldn't be a problem.

I just found the Cube engine and Sauerbraten (wich is also under gpl)  http://www.cubeengine.com (http://www.cubeengine.com) it looks nice from the screenshots at the website and can create map in real time. I'm downloading it now.
