if your setting it up of a home internet connection you may start to get a lot of lag at around 6 or 8 players
there is a wiki on how to set one up DO NOT LINK[/b]) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Servers](DO NOT LINK) h t t p s : / / openarena . wikia . com/wiki/Servers (http://([b), i  dont know why it has a separate cfg setup for Linux as it doesn't matter what OS your on its always the same. there is a good list of most of the variables here (http://q3console.planetquake.gamespy.com/variables.htm), so add what ever you need
if you want the server completely private you need
g_password ""
g_needpass 1
there is also a way to make a few slots private, look it up on the keen var list
