Title: Reported errors/bugs/flaws in 0.7.0
Post by: w1zrd on July 06, 2007, 11:04:55 AM
Thought we might start a thread for various things we encounter during gameplay in the new version. There are bound to be some things that does not occur during alpa/beta testing, so here we can give notice of things we find.

Animation error when crouching as Liz, he's behaving like our beloved Major. (He is not dead on that screen, he is crouching :))

There will be more things, but now I'm off to explore this wonderful new update...well done guys!

[edit: the Jenna models head goes through her torso when she's looking downwards]

[edit: the railgun beam comes from way below the actual gun when shooting (and sounds like shotgun :).]

[edit: is the shotgun supposed to have that low frequency when shooting? Distorts sound completely]

[edit: Sarge (red) model's abdomen goes through his hips when looking upwards]

[edit: The ISLANDDM map does NOT work if vertex settings are enabled, then the whole map is basically black, lightmap MUST be enabled]

oa_dm2 may have too many bots in single player mode, if you get an error like this:

Code:
ERROR: Hunk_AllocateTempMemory: failed on 8388616

just remove a bot and restart the level (note this error only happens with bloom turned on and can be fixed by allocating more memory with com_hunkmegs if you have more memory available...)

Sometimes the music in oa_dm3 doesn't play and the engine throws out an error about a misnamed file, restarting the game engine should fix this.

Bloom (at the default settings) has a weird "overdraw" error when carrying the railgun - the shiny railgun effect on the top of the gun will show up partially on left side of the screen.

kaos2's lava isn't as flarey as the original :(  (the original kaos is still there but not in arenas.txt /map kaos if you miss the flare)

For Developers and people wanting to compile the engine themselves with gcc 4.2:  Fuddl's fix for compilation with gcc 4.2 available here (http://openarena.ws/board/index.php?topic=814.msg5405#msg5405) is not applied to the code, apply the patch and recompile.

During playtesting a series of strange gfx bugs has occured, on several different systems. Seems like polygon extrude in extreme close-up :) Look at the screenshots for a better idea of the thing. This seems to be mostly with Angelyss rai and her default skins. Here are the cards where it's been seen on, both under Window and *nix.

Radeon 9250
nvidia TNT2
geforce 6600GT
nvidia 7950gt 512mb +max details, flares&bloom

for some reason my windows machine cant join any servers allthough I assume this is because all the servers havent yet been updated with the newer version of OA. I know its been awhile since my last post, I just couldnt pass up 0.7

the 0.7 qvms are not compatible with 0.6 due to several changes, like the team orders menu which now works :)

reminds me of a glitch in zelda when a cutscene is performed with the wrong player model.

0.6 servers are shown in the server list, i would consider this a bug.

skeleton is missing some sounds?

not a bug, but the flag rotates and rustles, which looks kindoff wrong.

congrats on the release though. ;)

well its still a problem, if someone tried 0.7 just after it was released they would be put of right away because they get kicked from every server they join with a rather unhelpfull error message. you should change the protocol id or whatever when a new version is released.

Bug in the Single player mod :
The last map of the second tier, Fan, crashes and exits the game after two, three, or four minutes (duration varies). This map crashes only in Single player mod, Skirmish and Multiplayer mods are not concerned.
Suggestion, still in the Single player mod :
There are not enough bots in the second tier (for example, a 1vs1 in 30 frags in a very large map is really boring).

Affectuoso,
Raphael.

this happened also to me on the same while i was trying the svn version about a month ago, i hoped that it was fixed. (i haven't had time to try on the final one yet)
anyway, for me it crashed also on skirmish mode (haven't tried multiplayer, but if i remember right it is exacly the same of skirmish).

That little annoying bug when you are in a 1vs1 game is still there:

* server setting 1vs1 (g_gametype 1)
* There are several players in the queue waiting to play and
* Two players fighting each other an
* You are in the waiting queue and
* You are in 'free spectator' mode

If you now decide to press fire, i.e spectate one of the playing players, and then go back to 'free spectator'
then you are automatically pushed back to the last slot of the players queue waiting list. This bug was also in 0.6 but it's worth mentioning again...and again. Waiting times can be quite long if you decided to switch a few times between the players currently playing :)

I finally witnessed this, playing on the tuxfamily 0.7 server in Fan just before the server either disconnected or crashed (if it crashed removing fan from rotation would be a good idea).  Freakish... though I wish I knew what was causing it, maybe the model's lod's need to be re-exported to md3 (being sure the materials were correct :) )

Got the same problem with fan, only when playing single player, and also have lot off trouble with server, I can't log on in moost off theme : "Invalid game folder", or some missings files or "game integrity" !
I'm using Ubuntu 7.04 and the only changes I've made to the game are 3 little bind in the .cfg

Title: Re: Reported errors/bugs/flaws in 0.7.0
Post by: kit89 on July 11, 2007, 02:57:01 AM
I think the problem could be with the bots in fan. As it was the only time it would crash for me when there was bots playing.

So I can only assume that its processor intensive as the map is so open, the bots can see all nodes at one time causing problems. I tried looking at the source file but it wouldn't load up in radiant so I couldn't see how the bot clips & cluster portals where setup.

I also noticed that, but I think it only happens when you select all gametypes. Have you tried selecting the specific gametype of k-play2 or 3?

Use the scrollbar on the right hand side, to view all servers.

If you place the cursor directly over the arrows, you wont move up and down on the list. You have to be over to the right a little bit more.

Not really a bug (although, I must admit, it somehow annoyed me), but why do OpenArena save screenshots and config files into "Documents and Settings\x\Application Data\OpenArena\baseoa\" and not in the "real" base directory ? (I'm running under XP -- and everything else is fine for me ^^)

That is proper behavior for a multi-user system.  If you don't like it create a link to the directory in your "real" base directory.

Okay guys, its been a while I didnt played the game and now I see the new v0.7, and I must admit its very great =)

Its great because of graphics, bloom effect, number of models and maps...

But its unplayable, at least by me. I encounter a camera bug that stucks my camera for a second or two every 10 seconds. Apparently, it happens sometimes to other players, but it happens EVERYTIME for me, so its really awful, and I think I will need to switch back to 0.6 until this bug is resolved.

I tried to put all settings by default (with cvar_restart) and reinstall, but no success. Sometimes in 1vs1 servers I can play but when there are a few people playing at the same time (in DM for example), I have this bug when there are plenty of players around me in my area. Maybe this is a bad management of packets ? But I took a look at my lagometer and everything was fine. And my ping is between 18 and 30, usually 21.

If I find some more informations Ill edit this post, but its a really awful bug.

/Edit: Another bug I discovered is with the cg_trueLightning: set cg_trueLightning to 1, now don't move and shoot with lightning gun: the bolt follows your aim. Now step right or left while shooting and you'll see a delay with the lightning. In OA 0.6 and Q3A this bug wasnt here, the lightning would follow quietly.

wow these are some wacky funky bugs. did dmn_clown do some weird qvm messery that we shouldn't have?

(hope you didn't apply the unneccessary, unrelated changes to the makefile from the bloom patch)

Title: Re: Reported errors/bugs/flaws in 0.7.0
Post by: dmn_clown on July 13, 2007, 11:48:10 PM
@fromhell: No, the qvm was compiled at 1106 and wasn't touched by the bloom patch, the only changes made to the code from stock ioq3 were cosmetic.

WRT the lightning, I see the same behavior in the lightning bolt in 0.6 and 0.7 and in quake 3 arena (e.g. a delay between where you are aiming and the bolt itself)

@GrosBedo, have you tried deleting your q3config.cfg file completely and starting over from scratch?

Thanks :)  Like I said in my original post there may be too many bots in the single player mode.  Try increasing com_hunkMegs to 512, from the command line:

Code:
./ioquake3.i386 +set com_hunkMegs 512

Rebooting to free up some of your RAM may also be a good idea.

I have some problems with bots in skirmish. I have left two bots and when I started after a while only one bot left :/ Anyway stability cannot rely on number of bots. It means that some oa maps are too complicated for q3 engine.

No, it means that your setup has issues with one map and ends gracefully with a signal 11 error, you are using a kernel with a brand new memory scheduler that has bugs and is far from stable.  Have you tried the game on an earlier kernel or the 2.6.22 kernel?

Currently (svn version newer than 0.7.0) maps that always cause crash are OA_DM2 and OA_DM5. I found another annoying issue. Looks like every map has bot_minplayers variable set to fixed value so I cannot add as many bots as I want even in skirmish mode. Only OA acts in this way, both Q3A and UT2k4 allow any number of bots that is limited only by available slots' number.

Off course man, in fact I didnt put my old configured q3config.cfg, and when I encountered those bugs I tried cvar_restart AND delete the q3config (but cvar_restart do the same).

It would be cool if the dev team could do a patch for the bugs they can correct before next release, else it would really lower down the quality of the game the time being.

The only time I've ever seen the camera lag other than at the very start of a match when the vm is still compiling, is when I set my maxfps too high (in a network game) reducing the maxfps solved any camera lag that I've experienced, though it kills your trickjumping.

I play Q3A, UT2k4 and Painkiller via Cedega and imagine - IT WORKS, there are no stupid crashes! So stop abusing kernel developers cause they know better what they put into stable branch. These maps cause crash same as fan did and it's because they are crappy made not because my kernel, gpu, cpu or because I live in Poland and use Neostrada.

Hey chill ^^
Let's see that bug as an exception, incompatible lines or a misplaced dot somewhere around the calculation of the next alignment of three mystical planets before the back of Cthulhu. Of course there are bugs around (correct me if I'm wrong, but Open Arena is still Beta) but it's nice to tell the dev about them.
As far as I know, OpenArena is based on the source released by Id for Q3A. Unfortunately, some part of this code has been chopped because of legal issues. That's why OA doesn't behave exactly like Q3A.

I offered suggestions on getting the game working on your setup, you didn't try them and became combative instead. OpenArena is based on the ioquake3 engine NOT Q3A.

Also if you were talking about the old kernel dev. model I would agree with you, with the 2.6 branch stability was pushed off on the distro's so the kernel dev's could focus on new features/performance.  That is not an attack on the kernel dev's that is their development model.

I could be extremely impolite here, much like Linus, and start calling you F*ing this and F*ing that for not bothering to even try an easy suggestion on your end to debug what exactly is wrong on your setup that no one else is experiencing, instead I'll just end this conversation which is going nowhere because you refuse to try anything.  Have a nice day :)

You do know that Q3A & UT2004 have native Linux versions right? Which if you use the native binaries would improve performance for these games. :)

Also about the dev of the kernel, didnt a kernel developer say that the 2.6v was unstable and more bugs where appearing than fixes?

Please also bear in mind that without actually seeing your system with our own eyes, its abit of guess work to find the actual solution to your problem. Unless you are willing to help find a solution and try suggestion brought forward, there is very little we can do.

Also I've tested OA_DM2 with 6 bots, bloom on, & using com_hunkmegs 256. The map ran flawlessly in skirmish mode. Using the official 0.7.0 release.

Also what are your game settings? Do you have stencil shadows on? Textures set to high? High Geometric detail etc? AA & AF set high?
I once  cranked all the Doom 3 settings to high(Even tho my system was only suitable for low/meduim settings), which caused an identical error after I played for a while, bringing the settings back down to normal removed this problem.

It's so hard for some people to understand difference between containing bugs and being unstable. I'm very sorry because of it. Try to show me software without bugs. Every version that have even number in the middle is stable, so if You want try sth unstable, try 2.5.

UT2k4 and PainEngine are more demanding for whole system than ioquake3 engine which is in fact based on Q3A engine 1.32 which is 8 years old. So it's not fault of my system.

Predefined settings called "Very High Quality" which includes 1024x768 resolution, highest details, trilinear filtering etc. I've attached my conf file. com_hunkMegs is set to 64 but as I said increasing to 512 gives no result.

The only time I've ever seen the camera lag other than at the very start of a match when the vm is still compiling, is when I set my maxfps too high (in a network game) reducing the maxfps solved any camera lag that I've experienced, though it kills your trickjumping.

Ok I'll try that, and I'll try to set higher my com_hunkmegs and every other memory parameters (it's at 128 Mo at the moment).
Some other infos about this problem: it actually happens only on new maps, particulary when there is a big area to gith (and weirdly the bug doesn't happen on these maps when I look in a little room or a wall). The older maps that were already included in 0.6 don't produce any bugs.

/EDIT: Okay I tested and maxfps does nothing at all but reduce my ability to trickjump :p But com_hunkmegs seems to reduce the occurence of this bug, it's still here, but now it's playable. I noticed that launching many rockets with projectiletrail activated produces this bug, but removing this parameter reduce the bug. I will do some other tests, but it seems that the number of polygons or particules are the source of this bug (and my gpu isnt old at all).

/EDIT2: Okay, I've put com_hunkmegs from 256 to 384 and nothing happened. But with com_maxfps set to a number higher than 80, you then encounter this weird camera bug, particularly in the Hydronex (or whatever the name) CTF level. And it happens on old maps too, so it's a bug from the modifications of the engine (I didn't put r_bloom). Ill submit new infos as I find them.

/EDIT3: I've just tested locally on Hydronex map, and no bug happened, even with very very high FPS and with maximum bots I could add. Could it be linked to packet management as I suggested before ? Note that I dont have any network problem, no router, no firewall, and a ping between 15 and up.

The only thing I can think of is you may have some library conflicting with OA.

Because of quite large size of executable file (1.6 MiB) I think it has been compiled with -O3 - some funny person chose that flag as most people know it almost always breaks everything.

Code:
-O2 -fomit-frame-pointer -ffast-math -funroll-loops -falign-loops=2 -falign-jumps=2 -falign-functions=2 -fstrength-reduce -fstack-protector -pipe -march=athlon-xp

Also q3a executable file is smaller than 1 MiB so it probably uses -O2 too. I've tested with fun, oa_dm2, oa_dm5 and everything works properly. Just build it with -O2 and everything will be ok. I think there will be no need to limit bots' number. Probably most problems occur just because of too strong optimization.

Finally I have removed more shitty flags. Now game runs faster and executable file is even smaller (1 MiB).

Code:
-march=athlon-xp -O2 -pipe -fstack-protector -Wall -fno-strict-aliasing -Wimplicit -Wstrict-prototypes

It's possible, try adjusting your network configuration in the cfg file to match your connection.  http://www.techspot.com/tweaks/quake3/quake-9.shtml

Thank you very much for this link it's very useful, but I found where the problem exactly was. It was effectively a problem of network, through on my side. I thought I disabled firewall (ZoneAlarm) completely but no, there was some residue. Now I've completely turned it off and it works very smoothly, it's completely playable (but I still miss Void4 :'((( ). Sorry for all these troubles, but now if someone has some similar problems with FPS it's because of network configuration for sure.

Now for another bug that is for sure in the game, and which is new, is a bug disabling people from connecting to the game. It seems this bug comes when the players are playing (not spec) in a map, and the server set as nextmap the same map as previously. The players then don't connect and keeps in the score window, and their status is marked as "connecting...". Solution: command /reconnect or go to Spectator.

(Don't know if it has been made on purpose -ie bunnyjumping- but) when you press and hold the "jump" key while in air, the player will jump once more when he/she reach the floor.

cg_deferPlayers "1"

will get rid of the lag when a bot or new player joins.

I think this one is normal, that's why if you manage yourself your ammo and change weapon when it's needed you're rewarded by a little time bonus.

Sometimes it occurs while running about with rocket launcher without shooting, that the gauntlet sounds occurs for about .2 seconds. Has happened a few times and I cannot determine why/how. Another thing that I've noticed, but this is only while playing on excessive servers as far as I'm aware, is that when you fall in lava, drown or simply die, then you can use the gauntlet for about 1 second, even though you are dead :)

Don't know if this should be said or not since it is kind of cool, but while using the grappling hook (by using the "/give grappling hook" command) you are able to grab onto things and while holding onto them you can switch weapons and fire any weapon you want while still being connected to whatever you grappled to. If you want to disconnect yourself then you simply switch back to the Grappling Hook and click the fire button. I was also able to find that you are able to attach onto other people and stay at their location even if they move and do the same thing like I said before being able to stay in some spot while shooting another weapon. I find this to be really cool and even effective at some points but I thought I would just let you guys know.

Installed 0.7 just minutes after the link got posted, started playing - everything worked like a charm (almost). Then it seems, some weeks later, that strange texture problems start to appear on certain custom maps, a problem I ignored as they are in fact that, custom.

They had been working fine in both 0.6 and early days of 0.7 though. But then on dm4ish (standard) there was textures missing on the floor, the walls and certain lights so I thought that I'll re-install OA, which I did 3 days ago. Reason was that there was tons of texture problems (probably because I messed about trying to fix the missing ones :)) Then I had a look on dm4ish after the re-install and there were still some missing textures on the lights in the main room and on oa_shouse there was also some missing textures (see screenshot). Even SOME of the ammo-packs are missing textures sometimes and then on the custom maps, I get the textures sometimes, sometimes not :) Usually a restart of the client gives a higher success rate of getting proper textures :)

That was actually in the previous version as well.
server list scroll buttons are to the right of the actual graphic.

I have a fix for this. In q3_ui/ui_servers2.c, line 44, change the define for MAX_LISTBOXWIDTH to 63. The list box is currently too wide and interferes with the scroll arrows. This forces the activation area to be to the right of the arrow images.

I'm new here, so let me know if this is a good way to inform fixes or not.

Thanks...

That funny polygon extrusion that appears on Angelyss is still there in 0.7.1. Didn't know if more than "Angelyss/dark_blue is more blue on costume" was intended but the graphics bug still exists after this patch is applied, if the intention was to have it fixed with this package.
