Title: Binary patching?
Post by: fromhell on July 11, 2007, 06:09:17 AM
OA might get some patches in a binary patch format (as it's so big) but I haven't thought of an easy-to-make and easy-to-patch open source cross-platform (mac win lin) one :/

any ideas?

you could just rebuild the "patched" pk3's and include only what changed in a zip file with the same directory structure, in theory it works.

enki pointed me to xdelta

http://xdelta.org/

I wonder how easy this is though, have not tried it yet

as long as it works the same across all platforms, it shouldn't matter.  Though I like the nice threat from Pocket Soft in their latest news item:
Quote
emailed Pocket Soft about this, and as well as the obvious "you're using an old version" response, and "open source software has no support" arguments, they also said something along the lines of: "xdelta likely infringes on our patents as well", implying that using it may be illegal.

It is only illegal if Pocket Soft provides verifiable evidence of infringed upon code.

Since the last post, there has been another post of an email from PocketSoft and they have said that the statement came from an overzealous salesman and the statement was not consistent with their corporate guidelines.
