To create 3D models from scratch, use Blender.
To animate/export/etc. it to use with OA... that, I don't know :(

Theres 4 simple steps required to have a character in OA:

1) You need to model the character using a 3D modelling package in this case that would be Blender.
2) You need to animate it. This would be using Blender to do so.
3) You have to uv-map & texture your character. This would be a mixture of Blender & The Gimp.
4) Export your final character, using Blender.

Check out the Open Arena wiki on the required files to export to .md3.

Weird. I have these ten steps

1) Make the mesh.
2) UVMap the mesh.
3) plop basic color skin on mesh.
4) Split mesh into 3 (lower, upper, head)
5) Fix uvmap errors from splits.
6) Make 2 skeletons (lower and upper)
7) Rig them to them
8) Set up tags and parent them to bones appropriately
9) test in game for proportional checks
10) ANIMATE ANIMATE ANIMATE

Ever tried with Maya or Zbrush?

Maya and Zbrush3 cost a bit much, Blender is available gratis under the GPL v2 and some other license that I haven't bothered reading because I'll never use it.

The main difference between the three is that Maya and Zbrush3 don't have the ultra 1337 GUI from hell that requires reading 60 megs of outdated HTML (or buying the book) to understand, the rendering technology used, available shaders, and restrictive licenses.

Of course as soon as you understand the GUI, they change it on you.  I think al Qaeda is involved in this.  It's the next wave of terrorism...

No, I don't have a couple grand to spend. :)
And wouldn't ZBrush be taking it abit far? Its more suited to high poly characters where poly count isn't an issue.

<offtopic>
Their leadership are highly educated, the lowest level of education in the known leadership is a Masters in Engineering at the University of Michigan.  The people they use to further their agenda are generally the poorest and least educated (read:  easiest to manipulate) of people.  Of course the Western media doesn't make this fact apparent because it is easier to dehumanize them if they are portrayed as ignorant goat roapers from third world countries rather than the highly educated (most went to Ivy League schools) CIA trained people they are. </offtopic>
