Title: Question:Windows Vista and Open Arena?
Post by: marine1992 on August 05, 2007, 09:01:58 AM
My friend and I were thinking on upgrading our computer(me upgrading to Macbook pro while his upgrading to hi-end PC) after my PMR(Malaysian public examination taken by Malaysian Junior High Schools) and we're also thinking to throw away our windows xp and upgrade to windows vista.I have no problem running Open Arena since I have Ubuntu installed but my friend was afraid to use linux on his PC(even dual-booting) and he doesn't even want to use mac because he thought Vista is better than Mac OS X(yeah right). So the question is will Open Arena works with Windows Vista?Does there any small issues in it?Thanks!

According to a friend who was testing Vista with some games, OpenArena 0.6.0 runs just fine.

Edited to make the statement clearer.

Yeah,Mac OS X and Linux is better than any windows
That is entirely down to personal preferences and the various operating systems will always have pros & cons compared to others, there is no such thing as a perfect world, nor a perfect OS, it's just an illusion :P

vista is the same as XP. you cant run opengl apps directly after just after a new windows installation. at this point you can find your card's drivers for XP supporting opengl. but on vista ... dunno. it looks like the companies provide crappy drivers. but with the proper drivers it runs as good as it runs on XP

I ran OA on a satelite a100 on Vista, It ran OK most of the time but there were problems when the fighting got too hot and heavy, it would crash. there are a lot of settings to play with though. Also whenever i exit the game the display color would revert to 16 bit.
k.

If he really wants to be sure that OA will run on Vista, he should wait at least another year for a little more stable drivers AND make sure he has a video card with hardware vendor drivers for Vista. Video drivers from Microsoft don't support OpenGL.

OA runs just fine on Vista, both 32 and 64 bit versions.
