I just started playing OA as of today,

After my months of searching for the game most like Q3A, I tried AlienArena, urban terror, and some other stuff, and when i heard about OA, i was so happy!

And what im going to say next im probably going to get killed for because i'm sure there has been tons of discussions about this, but OA is not popular! And I dont know why, because alien arena is not nearly as good as OA and it is yet more active Sad

What would be the most full-proof way to get OA noticed? I read a thread about OA's site not beeing presentable enough to get people to download. would the maker of OA let a trusted volunteer to work on a more presentable site so it will attract more gamers?
Any other suggestions would be awesome...

PS: sorry for the bad grammar, I'm very tired right now and feeling lazy lol

Yop, welcome on the board Wink

You're right, some of us complain about OA being not very popular ...
I'm not sure it affects that much popularity, but there has been a proposition to make a new website.

I think some players went unsatisfied because of some changes, mainly sounds. And some bugs also made reluctant players to use the latest version.

OA has been going through a lot of development.  There's been like different 4 versions over the course of year, each a several hundred megabyte download. Not everyone has caught up yet. Ubuntu for instance, seems to still have v0.7.7 in its repository.

Painfull as it may be, it is a sign of life (growing pains perhaps?). Some of the other popular FOSS fps haven't had an update in a couple of years.

I noticed that the Ubuntu release was out of date (there is an update on get-deb) but its pretty poor of them. 0.8.0 and 0.8.1 are pretty much the same release, but the release was more due to errm problems. Regular releases keep users interested in the game. When a project is stopped being updated I generally remove it from my system, because good or bad its the changes that keep a game interesting. As an aside of Windows these binaries are particularly difficult to obtain.

Not difficult to obtain, no matter the architecture you can take the zip file and go with it... The package problem only occurs with linux users, because they avoid to install programs by other means than their package manager. This is good for most softwares, but isn't for OA. Unless package maintainer is particularly active, their use may not be the best solution ; fortunately most people can deal with it.

Sorry I do not this to turn into a flame. Obtaining the Zip is difficult the mirrors are those damn password protected things. Please do not talk about Linux from your comment you are simply not capable. If you want to have a windows vs Linux thread there is an off-topic section I would be more than happy to have a flame war in, but please do not spread ignorance.

Passwords a problem? Are you aware of Bugmenot? I would visit fewer sites without it.

??

In general, I'm reluctant to install software that's not in my distro's repository unless I really want it. Is this strange? I don't think Windows users  have this luxury.

I like installing things from repository because i get all things with few clicks, but i can install other games if they don't require other libaries or packets. When game needs more 10 packets, and that packets more, i don't want to install it, no matter how important it is.
