When I try to start Open Arena it loads a blank screen then it goes back to my Ubuntu desktop like nothing happened.
What can I do to fix this?
Thanks

Thanks, I can't tell what error it gives me, it doesn't give me any.  It just shows a blank screen for a second then goes back to the Ubuntu desktop.

I use Ubuntu 8.04.1

You have to start it from your terminal / konsole / whatever  command line based console and you have to read the text output after the crash.
BTW: Better take it from this page, if you use Ubuntu 8.04.

it seems to me like you haven't enabled the restricted drivers.

Go to System=>Administration=>Hardware Drivers, then check the box underneath Enabled.

This is the most likely cause of your particular error.

Restricted drivers (aka the official drivers from your graphic card maker) need to be enabled. Compiz should be disabled.

Here OA 0.8 at Ubuntu 8.04.1 works good. Well only in 800×600 windowed mode with low details and only with 30 fps, but this is, because my hardware sucks at all Smiley
