Hi,
I have an Apple iBook G4 PowerPC 1,33 GHz, 512MB DDR333 Ram and on the Board is a Radeon 9550 with 32MB DDR graficmemory. Usually, i have between 30 an 80 FPS, it is toooo low. My options are "fastest" and a resolution of 800x600.
Is there any possibilty to make my AO faster?

Look a bit more in the forum, there is at least another recent thread dealing with this issue.

Hey try playing with a Frame rate of 20 like me.
Maximum I have ever had is 45.
Tried all sorts to improve it to no avail.
I think I need more memory. 256Mb is not enough.

lol.

vertex light is the easiest way of increasing fps (r_vertexlight 1), also if you have a duel core processor you can try the "r_smp 1" console command - there's abotu a 50% change it will increase fps by ~30, or it will stop oa working (so change this value back to 0 in your config and restart oa). Another good way to increase fps without affecting graphics is with the command "com_hunkmegs 256". In the end it really depends just how much you want to bastardise the games graphics to get acceptable fps, though there's another thread round here somewhere where I posted my config which you should try if you stil have problems - I can almost guarante you 125 fps with it, though it doesn't quit look how you'd expect oa to look (some peopel like it, some peopel hate it).

Ye.. I much prefer lightmap though so this was one of the last things I tried.. in almost all cases, I get a perfect 125 fps with vertex. :/

This problem isn't isolated to oa though, it happens to me on ioquake3. Or perhaps there is stuff used in the maps causing such a performance drop?

Hm com_maxfps was set to 125 already. BTW it happens only on windows. On linux same system I get FPS larger than 60.

All you FPS seekers use r_picmip 5 to even lower your low details. This setting is mostly used by profesional gamers cause it incrises visibility of other players.

Bah. Do you play blind folded? Of course you wanna use visability for your help. Same thing army colors arent flourescent. Fuck it. Setting is there where everyone can use it.

Finalists at last QuakeCon used lower picmip settings and I don't think they are unskilled or smth.

Me playing ant lousy FPS ( maybe not on Windows OS but linux) gives huge advantage to my enemy. Are they cheaters cause they use better equimpement. If players get better FPS on picmip option they should use it.

BTW I use picmip 2 on all OA systems I play on!!!! I use it in QL but not on OA.

I also had that "limited to 60 fps" issue ;

On Linux, it depended on which version of mesa (opengl libraries) I was using.
When using stable version of the libs, I had normal fps.
When using experimental version, it reports wrong fps, and tends to stick to 60, no matter com_maxfps.

If you update your graphics card drivers (on Windows), it may help.

You may also use other versions of OpenArena binaries, I think I experienced this problem with some recent (> 0.7.6) builds, and sometimes not with older ones (or the contrary).

It could be anything else, but to me, that 60 FPS limit suspiciously sounds due to having vertical sync enabled somewhere. Check your driver settings.

I had that limitation too on a laptop due to screen refresh rate or something?

Has anyone played on a ctf map with lots of fast jump pads? Is identifying the other team from your own really that much of an issue?

60 Hz is the refresh rate of your screen. You can't change that if you are on a laptop--and it's not what you're after anyway. On the other hand, 3D drivers have an option to synchronize whatever they draw to the screen refresh rate to avoid tearing. That is what you (may) have to turn off. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vertical_synchronization.

Funny thing is anyone that bothers to use a picmip as low as 5 in normal gameplay would probably rape you with default settings. Being an oa developer doesn't automaticly make you qualified to dictate to better players than yourself how they should or shouldn't play the game.

I think that the most extreme way to gain FPS would be displaying sprites instead of 3D players, hiding the HUD and hand. And also spriters for rockets and other projectiles.

low end video suffers a lot from transparency, texture overlays, masks and fog.

You could try a printer/ teletype instead. Wink

i could do with more stable fps myself, somehow oa is the only game i have a jittery fps on all detail levels with.  just as bad with maxed out details as with lowest detail.  it was the same on my old pc.  both have their fps reduced similary, 500fps single player no bots 20 online sometimes even.
