The java IRC applet does a lovely little number on j2re 1.4 + iceweasel (re-branded firefox 2.0).

It loads fully and then crashes both.

I've set up the applet to give everyone (including myself) an easy way to join the chat without an IRC-client.

If you know a good alternative to PJIRC (http://www.pjirc.com/) please let me know.

I'm going to test a few different Java versions before I look for an alternative (It also happens in Iceape [rebranded Seamonkey]) it might be an amd64 java issue of which there are a lot of them.

[edit] It would appear that blackdown java and pjirc are incompatible cgi::irc would appear to be a non-java alternative written in perl, with the caveat that all users are entitled to the source code if it is modified.

I just tried it but the client always quit with an EOF-error. The bugtracker has this problem listed but unfortunately not solved.
Additionally, server based irc-clients take up much of the server performance.

I know it's not the perfect solution but I have made a costum package of bersirc for win32. It's very small and lightweight, doesn't need an installation and starting the bersirc.exe should instantly get you in the oa-channel.

I'm not sure about all linux distros, but AFAIK most of them have an integrated irc-client.

edit: I've added a fully automated exe that makes it even easier to start the chat (oachat.exe) on windows

Actually there is very little "integration" in GNU/Linux and the clients I've tried do not agree with my iptables/psad (Firewall/IDS) settings and don't allow connections through local proxy's.

[edit] Also another reason that is a bad solution, some ISPs (Not mine) forbid the use of IRC clients hopefully no one loses their internet connection using that.
